Time Passes

Life draining from the planetary pool
of undesigned genes
no lifeguard greets New Year's revelers
with warnings about boozing and bathing.
Jump in at your great risk,
what used to be deep and dreamy
is now
disappeared and dangerous
but jump in anyway,
its our only chance.

Day In The Life -- It will be interesting to check out the Albert family resolutions of last year. I was just coming out of Hep C chemo and I bet I made lots of commitments to good health --Sorry but I didn't quite manage to keep them. I wonder what we will resolve for the coming year -- I certainly will try hard (no matter what) to remain me and not be owned by my illness ( a kind of non-attachment). A friend of mine is telling me that since the illness is now part of me - it might have something to teach me. I'm very open to the idea but if its true, this cancer kind of reminds me of a hideous teacher I had in the 4th Grade. She was an ex-marine.

We will look in on some friends at a NYears Party -we went to it last year and it was great fun. Who knows how much energy I'll have, but I'll try my best.

Nice to see Rob blogging again.

On My Dial

2 in the morning
and getting every keyboard letter
wrong
my absurd sermon
incomprehensible even to me
nothing walking talking a straight path
it's all confused and staggering.
and then picking up a neighboring escapade
on my loony mind radio of awake and dreaming,
a country music station coming out of Texas
where they keep killing the DJ's and engineers
only sponsors surviving,
nobody know what to play next
and through the static of never ending tortured night
some slurry speech is coming through
about his great days as a cheerleader
and how the whole world was once impressed.

Day In The Life - Some friends coming by today. Judy made a great chicken soup last night. I'm figuring out that I need to develop a special mind set and center for dealing with this cancer of mine. One that is not overwhelmed by information or fear but keeps itself in tact and makes reasonable decisions. Not always easy task because I think it is in the nature of this illness to attack such a centered mind.

Top Secret - An absolutely silly film about an Elvis type rock star (played by very young Val Kilmer) who gets invited to perform at a world cultural festival in East Germany. It's all a nefarious scheme, the concert is a cover for high risk Communist mendacity. The film picks up bits and pieces of Casablanca and for some reason a left over French underground is fighting the East German government which is so evil, its official newspaper is called the Daily Oppressor. The film is a fun way to waste a few hours.

Send In The Tanks

When Bush stole the election
from Gore
pundits boasted about
how there were no tanks in our streets,
democracy dying with a wimper,
it was a true source of shame.

When will the camel's back break?
And Americans become angrily uncontrollable
because a war dictatorship of criminals
has eaten their Constitution?

Will they realize that Bush
isn't their President
but their warden,
when will the presence of tanks
be Dubya's final gasp
of our honor reborn
restoring a Constitution?

Day In The Life -- Judy and I went in to Kaiser for some blood tests for me and to pick up some meds. When we came home RA called from SF, he's the photographer who took the photo of me we used on the cover of "Who The Hell." He's a nice guy and it was good hearing from him. Also M called yesterday and I brought her up to date, E-mails keep coming in -- Just got a phone call from LK --the strong support does offer hope. Jessica will be coming back in a few weeks for another visit. From questions I've been getting -- I should clarify that apparently my cancer is in a fairly advanced state and that liver transplants are not used with this type of cancer.

Someone offered to try to get me the original Jack Benny - Carole Lombard version of "To Be and Not To Be" - I hope she can pull it off.

Passages

Reflecting on the year
of everyone falling apart
millions making maximum contact
with full court Bush cruelty
finally screaming impeach the fascist bastard
they wondered
who those deaf and dumb Democrats were
who kept getting in your way on the subway
trying to get to the power station
but always getting off at Wall.Mart.
where Clinton was impeached for a blow job
but war, murder, torture
and reading other people's mail
is just a jolly form of nation building,
a bright Christmas tree
for lynching everything evil.
---

Day In The Life - I've lost count of the e-mail's I received in response to my liver cancer. (Judy is printing them all out) I've managed to reply to all of them -- and if I missed yours, please know it was unintentional -- the meds do sometimes space me out. I heard from a friend who has a revived ancient cancer and has a doctor who told her that the Hep C Interferon treatment she underwent for a year might have damaged her immunity system and revived the cancer. Which has me wondering if my Hep C treatment and the year of induced Anemia I suffered, might have brought on my cancer? What a horrible thought. But it doesn't seem impossible.

We have an appointment with a liver surgeon on Wednesday. That should give us a fuller prognosis od the illnes.

Jessica is back in SF and resuming law school. It's good that she now has some distance from all this but she will be revisiting us in three weeks. Bless her.

If you see a really funny movie let me know. (See my review of The Producers) Of course there is always the Daily Show and the Colbert Report.

I got an e-mail from an old friend who reminded me that I once told him the best way to get out of a tough spot is to pretend you are WC Fields. Truer words were never spoken.

Thanks But No Thanks

Macho tough guy
isn't falling apart
getting very emotional
crying
maybe I'm not in touch with my
deepest feelings, darkest fears
but I know what they are
and who wants to meet them anyway?

---
Day In The Life -- Yesteday the Albert's sent out the following bad news e-mail. We have a received a large wonderful warm and supportive response. I'm eprinting it below and it will probably bum you out (it better) but be reassured, I am a fighter and I intend to keep this blog going with undiminished energy.
--

My dear friends:

I've received awful news. I have an advanced cancer that is located in my liver and may have spread elsewhere. At this point it is described as incurable. My only option may be surgery. But this will only happen if it's the surgeon's opinion that the cancer has not already spread. I'll get his ruling next Wednesday... And I will also look for a 2nd opinion.

I know it as just a short time ago I sent you the great news that after a year of Hepatitis C chemo-Hell, I was pronounced cured. And that my liver was in the process of healing from the Hep C damage. So where did the cancer come
from?

At present the doctors say they aren't sure. But it is possible that my Hep C had
caused more liver damage than was noticed in my original biopsy and that it was
in a much more serious state and just kept getting worse.

At this point though, this is all speculation.

Naturally, I'm very pissed off/angry over this shocking reversal of fortune. I
guess it proves there is no such a thing as ultimate fairness. You just get dealt a hand and you play it out as best as you can. I know this is a terrible bummer, but (I am still a
Yippie) I am trying to deal with it with dark humor and defiance. Judy has helped
me in ways too great to be described. And Jessica now on winter vacation has
magnificently joined the gang. They are my support and motivation.

I am not feeling much pain at the moment, just fever and very low energy. I would like to hear from you, an e-mail would be fine. And those of you who have been thinking of visiting us at some point in the future are advised (just to be on the safe side) to speed up your schedule. I will continue to write my daily blog and to keep folks posted on my condition. Of course I will continue to write political poetry and movie reviews. My blog address is http://stewa.blogspot.com/

so tune in, stay posted and please keep in touch. --Stew

Missing Scrooge

Why don't the tube masters
show old versions of Christmas Carol,
the tale of a greedy capitalist
who spent a stoned night remembering how much fun life used to be
and how hideous
his present and future
being so married to the chains of money.

Scrooge repents
and decides to have fun being generous to people
especially his employee.

Is it just too unbelievable for modern audiences?
Imagine Cheney and Bush and Rummy
turning nice just because they had a few bad dreams?

Scrooge was a man for liberal seasons of hope
and transcendence
He has no standing in the modern mad matrix
where even old fashioned greed
seems like a quaint charm.

We saw the Producers. Which started as a Mel Brooks film of modest success, became an off the charts Broadway hit and now returns as a newly made film. It's fantastic fun (ignore all negaive reviews) with the super talented Nathan Lane as the corrupt Broadway producer Max Bialystock (though I'll always love the late Zero Mostel's original version). What's great about this film is that it finally makes us understand why that atrocious musical "Springtime For Hitler" was a fantastic hit. Uma Thurman is of course sexy as the secretary but she's also very funny.

Like A Bird

Fat and fancy
hawk on post,
posing for pictures
from any angle
despite much degradation
nature still has pride.

--
Day In The Life-- The Ridgefield Nature Preserve was bursting with bird yesterday. Tons of hawks, herons, geese and ducks and lots of beaver creature thrown in. For some reason it stopped raining and the semi light and shadows created wonderful mysterious experience.

Judy made the world's greatest latkes last night and Jessica brought spinning musical dreidels to the feast.

Today we will go see the new film version of the Producers. Unfortunately our favorite Chinese restaurant is closed. A Chinese restaurant closed on Christmas? That would never happen in Brooklyn.
