Empire On Sale

In the Bush built Matrix
down in the bargain basement
every lie is on sale
priced cheaper by the half dozen
since phony Intelligence
caused Rummy to leave the front door open
and parading Pig for President anarchists
ended everyone's nap
by shouting "Fuck You" at the religion counter
of moronic myths.

Dubya standing on a soap box
in front of heavily dosed soldiers
preaching the old narrative
but even GI's now have a subway to catch
and places to go.

Day In The Life -- I'm feeling better, less coughing, better breathing. I should be able to get out of bed for my 66 birthday which is tomorrow, It has me thinking about what I still seriously believe in and what I say out of habit. Maybe I'll be able to clarify all this in the weeks ahead. One thing is for sure -- if Bush believes in it--I'm against it. How's that for simplistic starters?

--
While lying around in a sick bed, I watched "The Maltese Falcon." Of course I've seen this film a million times and I always pick up on its noir and unfolding mystery, but this is the first time I was able to fully tune in on its absurd and very playful comedy. The give away is the broad smile on Bogart's face when he is alone and not confronting the zany and dangerous characters who make up the plot, including great performers Peter Lorre and Sidney Greenstreet. Gradually Bogart as Dashell Hammett's Private Eye, Sam Spade figures out what's going on and becomes the ring master, taking charge of the absurd hilarity and making it all happen.

Morning Melodies

Rainy fever falling,
no snow to hide its hell,
dark wet streets shine dim light on pain,
Bush keeps lying
because the truth lacks purposes of his power,
our sentence reads three of his domination to go
and good behavior offers little hope,
some even say
he'll bomb Iraq
to back before the stone was invented.

Sunday marks Highway 66 years of my life
reduced now to cynicism and gallows jokes,
most dreams died with our friends passing,
but politically under priced Venezuelan oil
is cutting heating costs in impoverished Boston,
a spark of sentimental justice still burns
with my cake and candles,
please don't call it camp.

Day In The Life -- Negotiating with my pneumonia. I'll make serious offerings to the god of sickness -- if the illness goes away by Sunday Dec 4, my birthday. Because of illness in my body, Danny K has offered to come over and help with some cooking. Bless him. D is coming over Saturday morning with a tape of Punishment Park, a more or less suppressed 1970 lefty flicks that The Nation magazine says is very relevant to 2005 and the terrible world of homeland insecurity.

Naked News

We can always kill reporters
and blow up TV stations
but how much more
compassionately conservative
to raise their standard of living
and capacity to buy American products
by putting them
on our payroll,
buying up pundits and punks
is merciful and bloodless,
it works in Washington so why not try Iraq
put a Muhammad Ali on the take
have him write heartfelt heart wrenching
personal accounts of life in Democratic Iraq
for the Baghdad Times-Picayune.
Dubya will be quoting them
next time he talks to rehearsed soldiers.

If our employees sell their story
to the NY Times
we can always blow up them up
and blame terrorists
and Democrats.
---
Day In The Life -- I started taking some super wonder pill for my pneumonia and I do feel a little better. I've been getting a bunch of interview questions about the Yippies -- some interesting stuff about our relationship to the Diggers.
--
Haunted Honeymoon -- This was the great Gilda Radner's last screen appearance before she died. It's a silly movie set in the 30s and making fun of those old time scary radio dramas with their werewolves and creaking doors. Gilda's presence along with husband Gene Wilder justifies watching this sometime funny film.
--
Bob Herbert suggests in today's NY Times that we cut and speed walk out of Iraq. Last week I raised the possibility of cutting and jogging out of that war. I want to assure readers that Herbert is not on my payroll.

Holiday Shock And Awe

Some say Bush should seize the reins
of his own administration
preferring rule by idiot to monster
but the reins are hidden at undisclosed locations
used for whipping
suspected terrorists and kinky politicians.

The rest of us
hanging around
like consumers waiting expectantly
for the next catastrophe
to be put on sale,
will it be
highjacked airplanes
crashing into Babel's towers
Noah's flood drowning our dreams
a plague killing the first born
or the second coming of Richard Nixon?

Desperate consumers kill time
by beating each other up
and Dubya wonders
why God broke off the conversation.

Day In The Life -- I've been going in for medical tests for the last few months. Although I've been running an off and on low fever and have other problems, nothing much has shown up till now. But today a full blown pneumonia was discovered. Judy and I looked at the X rays and they were nasty. So I am taking super pills and staying in bed. I have an appointment with my regular doctor on Friday. For a year and more these blogs were dominated by my chemotherapy and Hepatitis C. It's not my intention to re-medicalize them. I'll get better soon.

Getting Practical

Dueling dictatorships in Iraqi war,
our guys are fighting for Shiite mystigogoues
in cahoots with Iranian tyrants
of absolute knowlege.

If Christian fascists can ally with Israel
because they believe it will bring Jesus Christ
to some small town Ohio truck stop
Maybe Necons think
their palship with Ayatollahs,
will cause Plato to be reborn
as head
of U of Chicago's philosophy department?

Jesus and Plato
leading ideal armies
and perfect republics.
Now at last
we have a reasonable plan!

Day In The Life -- I got some Yippie interview questions from a high school kid in Shaker Heights Ohio. Funny thing (as the world turns) but at one time I went around with (and really liked) the daughter of the famous semi liberal Congresman from Shaker Heights. I met her back in the early 70s, when she was living in an underground press commune in San Francisco.

--
Deconstructing Harry --Every once in a while, Judy and I like to watch an old Woody Allen movie. It's always good for laughs and ideas. And of late I particularly like his stuff about getting old, it seems so much more relevant the second time around. In this one Woody portrays a guy who writes novels about his friends and their sex lives and as a result looses most of his friends. As substitutes, he develops close crazy relationships with the characters in his books who somehow don't mind him creating them.

My favorite scene in the film is when Allen as author arrives at a college (his alma mater) that is presenting him with an award. Unfortunately the car also contains, his young, and kind of kidnapped by him, son, a prostitute and a corpse. The look on Woody's face sells the moment.

Career Choice

Big Pharma
sending out former cheerleaders
of many bumps and smiling grinds
now going to doctors and peddling drugs
to those medics
back from that free conference in Hawaii,

who better to communicate the anti depressant soul
of medical chemistry
than these perky pitchmen of passivity
and anti viral voom voom.

Wonder what Dubya will do
when they take away his power toys?
He was once a perky cheerleader
of yay team enthusiasm,
he has name recognition in a doctor's office,
and can spread his legs and sell bad products,
his future is bright.

Day In The Life -- Daughter Jessica really enjoyed her high school reunion. At first everyone was nervous and a little booze was required to mellow things out but after that, the greetings and conversations were warm and sincere. The main theme that Jessica picked up was that 10 years later, most of her old friends seem to be doing what they planned to do -- living in the dreamed of places and working at the wished for jobs. The general mood was optimistic. Let's hope that 10 years from now, that upbeat mood keeps on keeping on.
---
The Educkators --In this fine anarchistic German film (the kind that could never be made in Amerika) three friends take to breaking into the homes of the very rich and surrealistically redecorating their expensive objects into tributes of chaos and class revenge. They do not steal or deliberately destroy property. Calling themselves The Educkators they leave notes behind informing their wealthy victims that their days of being filthy rich are numbered. And then one night, a wealthy homeowner walks in on the gang and they defensively kidnap him and drive to a cabin in the beautiful woods. But what to do with him? Should he be ransomed, abandoned, or what? Too complicate matters the plutocrat turns out be a former leader of the 1968 German SDS who has sold way out but retains a certain charm and humanity and besides he smokes pot. The movie becomes something of a thriller, is extremely well acted and makes excellent points. If you liked Good-bye Lenin, you'll love this film.

River Run 2

Hail storm lightly falling on our heads
but sun is in walking distance
while snow dusts mountain peaks,
I'm strolling along a much calmer river
mellow turkey floating in my bloodstream
and knowing Cindy is returning to Bush's Ranch,
a fine moment
in the Northwest Passage.

-----
Day In The Life -- Judy and I and Jessica and K and M took a walk by the Columbia River on the Washington side. The winds were considerably less than the last time and the water was much calmer.
Judy took a lot of great photos. Everyone was in a fine mood in a great place.

Jessica went to her Lincoln High School 10 year reunion but she is still asleep. I'll get a report for tomorrow's blog. She returns to SF today.

One more thought on the latest Potter flick (see yesterday's review). Harry is starting to sound a lot like John Lennon. His Brit accent and tone of speech. I knew John back in the early 70's and Harry's conversational style is really taking on Lennon tones. And then there are the glasses he wears. They are also John Lennon reminders. Is this all deliberate? I'm sure we will find out.
