Magic Christian

What white rabbit can Bush
pull out of his hat
creating a "third term"
of success and popularity?

Perhaps Osama will be converting to Reform Judaism
joining with Dubya
bringing Wal.Mart to Arabia
and
low priced oil to all registered Republicans.

Or maybe China
going Catholic
without birth control
getting poor again
needing western charity
and lots of American restaurants
serving Bush burgers
while Taiwan and Japan
happily holding hands
promising greater co-prosperity
the second time around?

Meanwhile, back on the ranch,
practicing his magic act
over Thanksgiving
Dubya discovers the rabbit has escaped.

Day In The Life - There is something special about noshing on a Thanksgiving dinner the day after it was served. It's the same food but now it is consumed in far less formal circumstances. The eating has an almost fugitive or clandestine quality -- like you are ripping off the rich folk who last night sat at the feast table. Judy and I, Jessica and L and M enjoyed the second bandit's feast. And then we went to the movies and a Chinese Restaurant
---

Harry Potter and The Goblet Of Fire -- if you are looking for a perfect Potter movie -- one that gets it just noir and Gothic correct. One that catches what is central in the plot and brings it out in a dramatic, explosive and imaginative manner, Goblet of Fire is your cup of very high tea. Harry finds himself much against his intentions in a dangerous magic competition between Brits, Frenchwomen and Russians. He didn't enter the contest but his name was selected anyway. Dark Voldemortian forces are at work behind the scenes, they want to revive the evil one's power and destroy Potter. In the ferocious battle that follows the magic seems more real than the last Muggle presidential election. This is the best Potter yet.

Turkey

Lonely American
wanted to go to college
went to Baghdad instead.
this Thanksgiving
he doesn't even rate George Bush
serving him a cardboard turkey,
last year's photo opportunity
decides some Hajji handkerchief heads
need to be counting their blessings
at gun point.
---------

Day In The Life -- Our big Thanksgiving dinner was great. Forget about counting blessings, it was a delicious meal. Judy's turkey secret is putting a lot of olive oil on it, and doing a lot of basting. The turkey doesn't get dry when you do it that way. Also the stuffing is a Tuscan deal, that involves salami, walnuts, bread crumbs, celery and much more. Judy's Yorkshire pudding always blows me away. And S brought a fine potato kugel to the feast. It was great having Jesssica, K and M at the table. They added energy and labor to making it all work. Also nice being with D,A, E, H and M. At the meal's beginning Judy and I asserted two blessings. One being, Bush's falling poll ratings, the other being a revitalized, popular radical left in Latin America. And of course, today, we go see the new H. Potter movie.

Born Again

Be Thankful for socialism's revival
south of the border
dripping with oil
and imagination.

Down on the ranch,
Dubya won't mention his own Katrina homeless
when declaring his blessings
while stuffing turkey
and hypocracy,

but Chavez thinks about freezing foreign folks,
broke
in Brooklyn
not affording heating oil
abandoned by Bush
but not by revolution,
they'll be getting some of its stay warm oil
at bargain prices,
a comfortable Christmas
courtesy of Santa Socialism
and a reborn dream.

Day In The life -- Jessica is here with here two friends from SF. Lots of energy. We had Italian tomato soup with bread least night. The stock frozen and made with our home grown tomatoes. It was great. Today we will be preparing the big dinner. I will be working on the Mediterranean style stuffing. Jessica is also in town for her 10 year High School reunion and looking forward to seeing old friends and getting up to date. My 10 year reunion took place in 1967 when I was sitting in around the Pentagon. Going to my reunion was less likely than visiting Venus.

Big Easy Does It

The wheel keeps spinning,
cards getting dealt,
chaos rigs the deck
with careless coincidence,
count your transgressions one day
your blessings the next.
Enjoy the sparkles, whiffs
and tastes of transcendence,
keep moving,
translating irony
maybe this time things will work out.
-----
Day In The Life -- Jessica and friends fly in today and we do a lot of big dinner shopping. Tikkun is now distributing the article I wrote months ago about American Fascism, that appeared here and in CounterPunch online. And it is still circulating around the net. People must really care about the topic. A recount shows 11 people will be at our Thanksgiving table. I was never great with numbers. Jessica ,her friends, Judy and I will go see the new Harry Potter movie.

Speed 2 - Cruise Control is a fast paced action sequel to Speed. A pair of stressed out lovers (he's a daredevil cop, she's Sandra Bullock) are vacationing on a luxury liner when (big surprise) a psycho who hates luxury liners hacks into the computers, kills the captain, takes control of the ship, explodes a lot of bombs and for good measure steals jewelry. What's a daredevil cop and his girl friend to do, but try to foil his plans? There a lot more explosions followed by boat races and more explosions. Not to be taken seriously, but it's fun.

The Hour Is Late

Cutting and running
is best way outta Baghdad,
some say cut and walk,
skip jump and jog
but if you would rather fool around
someone's gonna be blasted in the back
shot while showing off,

better be blazing at top speed
heading for that helicopter
rusting on the roof,
while an ancient pilot
of deadly cycles
recalls his Saigon service.

Day In The Life --I got an interesting and probably on target interpretation of my dream (see previous blog) from R. She thinks my dream is about my dead political pals and how I write and talk about them -- and how people keep interviewing me about them.

Dream Update -- I didn't have this dream last night.

We are organizing our 14 person Thanksgiving dinner. The energy at the table should be amazing. (I wonder what Bush will consider his Thanksgiving blessings this time around?)

How can Cheney lie about lying. (The late Black Panther leader Eldridge Cleaver used to say about big time right wingers -- "They could look their momma in the eye and lie.") How can reporters take Cheney seriously? Are they afraid of undisclosed locations?

River Run

Seeing the same river
shaken by ferocious wind,
for once I am standing on the opposite bank
discovering unexpected caches of new beauty
carved out of rock and water,
as fog settles under bright sun
turning the world pink and pastel
what secrets lie hidden
in a different point of view?

Day In The Life -- For the first time, Judy and I visited the Washington shore of the Columbia River. The winds were strong and our ability to hike was limited but we did manage to get down to the river. What strong beauty! A whole new way of experiencing the Columbia. It reminded me of the first time I saw Niagara Falls from the Canadian side.

I'm having two weird and repeating dreams. In one, there is a sickness in which people think other people's thoughts. In the dream, maybe I have the illness. In the other dream, living people can talk to the dead via channels of special living people. Unfortunately these special people have no control over the channeling process. In the dream, maybe I'm a channel. Interpretations anybody?

Julius Caesar was murdered last night on HBO's Rome. The killing was carried out by "nobles" who feared Caesar's social and political reforms would deprive them of status and power. The same thing happened in Chile when Allende was overthrown. After the right wing coup, the nobles thought the Left and socialism were down and out but an article in this weekend's NY Times magazine describes the remarkable revival of radicalism, the Che legend and mass movements for social reform in Bolivia and in most of Latin America. It seems, you can't keep a good revolution down.

Can one more straw
actually break a camel's back?
It seems theoretically possible
but has an ancient market place
ever played host
to a spine cracking collapsing camel
falling over itself in agonized last gasps.

America staggers,
as Bush loads its back,
a crowd gathers
waiting to celebrate our shame.

Day In The Life -- We went to see Alex Cockburn, the very well known Lefty journalist speak at the PSU library (he is coeditor of CounterPunch an online daily journal to which I make regular contributions.) The place was packed and organizers were running around looking for more chairs. Cockburn was very witty and insightful when he spoke about how to build a peace movement. He suggests the use of popular language and the creation of
coalitions (he concentrated on antiwar, socialist and
libertarian alliances) and making what we are doing seem attractive and enjoyable enough that it might actually cause some people to join our ranks.

Later we went to a party that the Havurah Congregation threw for Joey Wolf, its Rabbi of 18 years. (And our good friend.) While there was the usual kibitzing, the praise that speakers offered to Joey's rabbinical leadership was sincere as was the emotional nature of his happy response.

Oliver Stone must have had some strong reason to invest so much time and money in making Alexander, but whatever his purpose, it doesn't come through in the film. Is the movie anti-imperialist? Showing that ambitions of world conquest always come to bad endings. (Alexander actually did have flowers thrown at him when he entered Babylon-Iraq) Is it pro-imperialist, portraying Alexander as an enlightened idealist trying through conquest to create a better world? The script offers both answers. What about homosexuality. The film implies Alexander loved both men and women. How does Stone feel about that? Sometimes he conveys homosexuality as seeming to be self destructive decadence and at other times as real and valuable love. Although absent a point of view, I never lost interest in this very long movie, the spectacle of a young western Aristotle educated General doing battle in the ever more esoteric East was fascinating and came to a magnificent peak when Alexander on horse does battle with an Indian warrior on elephant. Now, that has to be seen to be believed.
