Smack Down

Republicans and Democrats,
brawling cage match of Congress
scalp wounds opened
blood flows
over charnel house of Baghdad.

Neocons lying over their lies
Neoliberals pretending they once believed them,
referees from both sides
separating combatants
screaming "bipartisanship"
we all hate this war
lets have another one
bigger and better.

Day In The life -- Judy and I went to a lawyer who drew up a will for us. I guess it's a rite of passage. Acknowledging that you are going to die someday and you want the right individual(s) to get your Berkeley Barb collection. Surprisingly, it was also something like a second marital ceremony. In front of witnesses, signed agreements pledging that we would take care of each other and respect each others wishes. Those old vows coming back in changed circumstances, it was both touching and a little sad.

Al Franken's new book. "The Truth with jokes," is funny but not as funny as his previous work. It's a more serious book and a very well documented political history of the Bush Administration from the 2004 election to the present, a history of big lies and cruelty. If you've forgotten just how ugly was Dubya's last election campaign, this book is a required read. Watch out Ms. Hillary Clinton, they did Kerry dirty, to the max and an even mightier right wing, hate filled shit storm is coming your way.

He Lives!

Clawing himself
out of Boot Hill graveyard
Karl Rove decreeing
Operation Lie Again
and
every Bushie caught in bullshit
repeats
but does not prove his lie.

The spin master figuring
the born again lie gotta be believed
because nobody has the chutzpah
to be repeating a phony fairy tale,
mendacity is so beautiful
the second time around.

Day In The Life -- I was part of a 60's focus in two high school classes. I spoke about the whys and whats and whens of some of the great Yippie stunts and compared that lost golden era to today's America of Bush and gloom. One kid asked me a question. What's the difference between Yippie and Yuppie? I answered, "35 years." My main challenge was in the first class where there was a kid upfront with a hood over his head on the brink of sleep. He kept slumping at his desk. I was determined that by lively speech and colorful descriptions of wild funny events, I would keep the kid awake. It was a great chance to once again prove the superiority of Yippie over boring left wing politics. My efforts were rewarded, the young man had a few close calls but he did not sleep.

It was nice seeing D (who also lectured) to be recovering from chemo and breast cancer. She is very together.

Inquisition

Torture now the hottest fad.
Americans do it for themselves
not just using surrogates for suffering,
it's a universal language
of pain and intimacy
bringing people together
in undisclosed basements
for agonizing exchanges
on the information highway
where there are no secrets
that can't be discovered
by energetic application
of fiery electrodes burning the soul.

Day In The Life --I'll be be doing two classes today in a local high school --talking about the 1960s seen in contrast to the present. D and I do this gig a couple of times a year. I'll post a report tomorrow.

High Times' Pot Luck -- A likable film about the bohemian marijuana underground and dealing the weed. The picture is filled with crazed artists, musicians, drag queens, mobsters, protesters, punks and hippies and my old friend, song writer and singer David Peel. The film works because it takes the pot induced transformation of a Mafia soldier just seriously enough to give the playful independent film a decent plot.

Stella

Street car named Desire
is rusted out and ruined
just like American Dream and passion
during Dubya's downpour of hellfire and bullshit.

Katrina floods closed down all Big Easy streetcars,
the cheap way poor people got around town
looking quaint for the tourists,
it will take 30 million bucks to do the repairs,
who will put up the bread,
while FEMA goes kicking wet refugees
out of welfare hotels
just before Christmas?
Ghost of Tennessee Williams
politely protesting his pain.

Maybe China will make the big purchase
opening us
as a theme park named America?

-----
Day In The Life -- Maybe I'm getting a cold? Judy made her fantastic quick chicken soup last night and with a days blending it will be getting even better. Afterwards consuming the soup I did feel a little better. Do you ever have very stupid dreams that bring out profound feelings. I do, and it makes me wonder if I'm biologically wired to watch dumb stuff on the tube and still find something significant sounding to say.

Bush on his way to the world's largest country says China should copy Taiwan in its democracy. Taiwan being very small and having experienced years of dictatorship before its recent democratic break through. And since Taiwan is considered a province in China (both "China's" and the US supposedly recognize this relationship), putting them on an equal level with China will outrage the mainland government. Bush added that China should also emulate war criminal worshipping Japan. A country that once committed hideous crimes in China. Look for this Bush Asian trip to be about as productive as his recent miserable journey to Argentina. Does Wall Street (despite the tax rip offs) really want this committed idiot representing their interests?

The Sting

Major league con artists
know the glib magic of words
when exposed and trapped
they change the rules,

a skilled politician
can always run
against his record,
campaign against his worst deceit
and win,

but Dubya can barely say
"Fire Bad,"
with no imagination,
he keeps repeating used up lines
that once worked,
again and again
tragedy becomes farce.

------
Day In The Life - I've started reading Al Franken's new book "The Truth with jokes." It's funny and very thoroughly documented. The opening chapters on how Bush got himself reelected really revive absent minded anger. If (these days) for a fleeting moment you find yourself feeling sorry for Karl Rove -- read this book.

-----
Martha Stewart was well received on the Daily Show last night but there was no eloquence or great punch lines. There were hints of her amazing and somewhat likable arrogance. A quality that has stood the test of time.

Chinatown

Arnold mobbed by fans in China
after Californians advised him
to add long walks on short piers
to his training routine.
In Peking Mr. Olympia
is still an action hero.

Bush is heading for China
he's demanding they make their products
more expensive at Wal.Mart
and allow Catholic Church
to take care of young boys in Shanghai.

But Dubya's no movie star super hero
he can't fall back on a second career
cause he failed at everything.
His polls keep falling.
No one wants his autograph.

If Chinese leaders
wine and dine him
on hamburger foo-yung
it's only because he's a useful property
now available at Wal.Mart prices.

Day In The Life -- We went to the Ridgefield Wildlife Preserve and the highlights were a large owl hanging out in the mid afternoon trees and just how wet (after many rains) the Wetlands had become. Plenty of room for lots of ducks.
------
HBO's Rome -- Next week, Julius Caesar is headed to his inevitable assassination. He has defeated his enemies in war. And his program for reforming Rome is excellent. The problem is that this enlightened tyrant hasn't taken the trouble of killing his enemies. Such acts are beneath him and his civility. He's angered his enemies by seizing full power but then he lets them go about the business of hatching plots and conspiracies. Julie, you can't have it both ways.

Good Morning Portland

Drab morning rain,
at least George Bush
shares the mood.

Good Morning Portand 2

Aches, cramps and stumbles
low fever, suspicions and swellings.
He puffs up his chest
searches his aging remnants
for ghosts of blond swagger,
thus a minor American poet
begins his day.

Day In The Life -- Judy and I hung "My Heart," a recently acquired painting, by the maximalist artist, Joan Snyder. We saw an exhibit of Snyder's work at the Jewish Museum when we were in NYC and were bowled over by her power, imagination and delicacy. Later, when we were in Woodstock, we discovered that our friend Lola knew Snyder's agent who also lived in the Woodstock area. We visited her private gallery and we were again stunned by Snyder's work. All of the art was totally beyond our capacity and income except for one mono-print and we eventually decided to buy it. The work looks fantastic over our mantel and highlights and transforms the room. Thanks to Lola for making the introduction.

Capote -- Based on novelist Truman Capote's investigation of a quadruple murder that took place on a Kansas farm in 1959. Capote visits the killers in their jail cells and seems to fall in love with one of them. The guy is possessed of sensitive good looks, he is a talented sketcher and a reader of good books. Capote's attraction seems typical of the 1960's middle class romance with the lumpen (sometimes criminal) intellectual. (Full disclosure--I too had my share of dangerous lumpen associations although in my case they were politically based.) And there was always a lot of manipulation in it. Capote wants extensive interviews so he can write his novel, "In Cold Blood" and the killer wants Capote's help getting him a high class lawyer so he can beat the rap. Relationships like this always have a capacity for self destruction and this one is no exception. The acting is off the charts, especially Philip Seymour Hoffman's nuanced portrayal of Truman Capote. The camera work is also very strong and the endless flatness and loneliness of rural Kansas (even though the film was shot in Manitoba Canada) is strongly evoked. Perhaps Truman Capote shouldn't have fallen for the guy but then again he never would have authored a great novel.
