No Exit

Names and faces rearranging,
changing themselves
in winds and rivers of time traveling hard,
but Che remains
always marching in the streets
of rebel dreams and rage,
he hunted after LBJ and Nixon
and
now his forever young
always ironic face
and future piercing eyes
are glaring no mercy at Bush,
at his permanent counter revolution,
stalking him always
until victory.

---
Day In The Life -- With no crowds or shortages this year, Judy and I went for flu shots. But of course these shots don't protect against the new big bird flu monster. Bird flu even before it strikes, shows up so much that is sick in our society. We mistrust claims of oncoming disasters because Bush always uses them to keep control. You see Bush talking about bird flu and you think Karl Rove made it all up. And then there is the ever evil Big Pharma looking for its billions by manufacturing vaccines that won't work. And then there are the predictions of deaths that vary from 5 to 500 million. Such a variance in numbers means everybody knows nothing about what might really happen. I'm not saying bird flu is a fake, a fraud, how would I know, how would anyone know?
------
The Colbert Report continues to be a worthy spin off from the Daily Show. Steven Colbert creates an idiotic and funny talk show host who gets a fatwa sworn out against him for saying that Halloween is a greater holiday than Ramadan because of the candy. He thinks Karl Marx was stupid because he spelled Capital with a "K" and he gives his guests just two choices -- Do they think Bush will go down in history as a great president or the greatest?

Play It Again?

Paris is burning
with riotous rage
of suburban Muslims
North African young workers
without liberty, equality or fraternity,
jobs, dignity and democracy
are for the other guy.

For France and freedom,
Humphrey Bogart once gave up Ingrid Bergman.
These days,
it hardly seems worth it.
----

Day In The Life -- I spent the day reading and writing and I took my daily half hour workout in the weight room. Nothing spectacular, the kind of day the Chinese approvingly call uninteresting. I did make a likable chicken and mushroom dish.

I'm still getting positive e-mail about that fascism in America piece (it's all over bloglandia) I wrote a few months ago. The unpleasant topic is obviously on a lot of minds.

I read a review of the local Stones concert. Where do those guys get their energy? Certainly not from chemo or by pass surgery. Guess it's the vitamins.

An LA writer and film maker informed me that he sent a positive review of "Who The Hell" into Amazon.com That was a week ago and it has yet to appear. I wonder what the Hell is going on.

Judy and I watched George Bush talking about bird flu on the Daily Show. The unedited and poorly scripted Dubya, just seemed very weird, like a crazy guy talking to you on a Greyhound Bus that in three hard traveling years will arrive in some unknown place.

New Morning

Life force raining on dead forests,
nobody is home
everyone's out
torturing everyone else
in private prisons
where ownership passed
from Stalin
to democratic electrodes
and unlimited pain,
we now love
the odor of burning flesh
in the morning sunrise,
it smells like victory.
---
Day In The Life -- I received another one of those "Hi Stew, I haven't seen you in 30 years" e-mails. The internet and my web and blog writing sure helps me keep the biography of my life together. How else would so many old friends manage to find me and bring back to memory and light some forgotten portion of my personal adventures? Some riffs and happenings that had almost evaporated and now I'm thinking and writing about them. On this info highway the past is never past.
--------
Catwoman -- Halle Berry plays Catwoman to near perfection. She starts out as a painfully shy self demeaning woman, designing ads for beauty products that are developed by a very evil but glamorous couple. One night she is killed by agents of these human monsters but a friendly cat breaths new life into her.

Reborn as part woman, part cat, she needs a costume. One might expect that she will wear a soft furry one, with cute whiskers but instead she goes for tight revealing leather and (typical of most cats) a whip. After that it's violent sexy high fashion fun as she reeks vengeance on her former employers. There's also a love interest in a likable handsome cop but Catwoman's new liberated feminist personality has grown way too large for such trivial matters.

Continuity

CIA is finding meaningful uses
of East European prison facilities
formerly owned and managed
by KGB Cossacks.
They are just perfect
for holding and torturing
terrorist suspects
everything needed for terrifying tasks,
already there.

In Baghdad
Republican Guard rape rooms
were replaced
by Republican Party rape rooms.

In the chain of being and becoming
Evil is born again.
Indict a Libby
and
Renfield will do his task.

------
Day In The Life -- Judy and I hired a lawyer to do our will. There was exciting talk of total physical decline, vegetating on tubes and death. We have to go through this "Will" stuff because we have a daughter, and the family "fortune" must pass to her without chaos. But it can wake you up at night. Best to do it and stop thinking about it.
---
Do you watch Commander In Chief? It's all about a big tall woman President (played by Geena Davis) and her family. Madam President never won an election and she came in on a fluke but she's doing an effective job. She's warm and tough and I believe makes plausible in the American mind the possibility of a woman President.
--
The Democrats called a secret session of the US Senate and made the Republicans promise to investigate who concocted the lies that got us into the Iraq War. Are the Dems getting a fire in their belly? I hope so. But let's see what happens with the Supreme Court.

Play It Again, George

Starting wars
is Dubya's
old time salvation religion
with embedded reporters
charismatic strutting
and
fantastic photo opportunities.

If killings drag on
the shock, the awe wears off,
the cemeteries and hospitals jam pack
a replacement war must be found
new villains must be auditioned.

Syria is a strong contender
cause it interferes in a neighbors affairs
and
we never ever do that,

by dropping napalm from moral high ground,
will Dubya again
climb the polls?

Day In The Life -- Yesterday was strangely sleepy. We did go out to a Thai restaurant. Today we are going to see a lawyer about drawing up a real Will. That certainly is an acknowledgment of playing in the third act. Some guy wrote a review of my book "Who The Hell is Stew Albert?" for Amazon.com and said I made it all up. That I never knew Jerry and Abbie and Anita, Phil Ochs and Huey Newtion and John Lennon etc, etc. It's bad enough these guys are all unavailably dead, now someone comes along and publicly declares them to be my phony fantasy. I think of this as a form of identity theft. By the way, if you read my book and have something you really want to say, you might enjoy reviewing it for Amazon.
------
We watched a two hour History Channel documentary on Harry Houdini which concentrated on the magician's amazing showmanship and bravado. Some of the tricks he pulled off are still unduplicated. Just how did he make that elephant disappear? No one ever figured it out or found the elephant. The narrative on Houdini's life was interspersed by scenes from an auction where Houdini's props were selling at fantastic prices. Today's magicians wanting to own a piece of him.
---
Bush's new appointment to the Supreme Court is an act of war. Will the Democrats show up and fight?

The Shadow

The naked President
no longer landed on flight decks
serving plastic turkeys
he could only bow before
his fans and fanatics
taking their orders
obeying their commands

but cautiously circling crusaders
of truth and progress
remained trapped in the morning fog
cranky not angry
they saw his shadow
on cave walls.

It still seemed scary.

Day In The Life -- Judy and I heard author/gag writer/talk show host and possible candidate for the US Senate speak at a brunch. Franken was funny and serious. He is starting a group that will fund progressive politics in the Midwest and he may run in Minnesota for the Senate. I had a chance to kid with him about the "Oy Oy" segment of his radio show and the hilarious time he interviewed the Israeli ambassador.

We went to the Jewish Museum to see a very interesting exhibit on Jewish businesses in Portland from the 20's on. Although the space was limited the exhibit was very well laid out.

We checked out some Klezmer Jazz sounds at a benefit for Katrina victims produced at Havurah. Jack Falk put together a great band, and they joined with him in creating a perfect blend of East European klezmer and New Orleans big beat. It was inspired!

Many thanks to the National Lawyer's Guild for publicly mentioning our names at their convention. We feel honored.

Convention Of Lawyers

The face of a passed friend
of great fun
and high adventure
looking through his daughter's expression,
at home in her spirit.

Stunned and happy
I am gazing at immortality.

------
Day In The Life -- Judy and I went to a cocktail party at the National Lawyer's Guild convention being held in Portland. We saw lots of old friends from NYC and Berkeley. But the high point was talking with our old friend Margie Ratner Kunstler and her two daughters Emily and Sarah. Margie is an old friend from the days of wine, roses and revolutionary politics and Sarah and Emily were last seen as very little girls playing with our little daughter. Sarah is now a highly respected young lawyer and she and Emily are great makers of progressive video. Seeing them all was a moving experience and of course it brought back fine memories of the husband and father of the family, Bill Kunstler.
---
Robots -- A creative and idealistic young robot journeys to Robot City to work for a benevolent company that invents things only to discover that the operation has been taken over by a cruel greed freak. The young hero hooks up with the benevolent but deposed owner and fights back. Robot City has a likable art deco Oz quality and while everything is predictable it's also fun.
---
Republican prostitute journalists are pretending Libby rode his Scooter through a red light, as a highly impulsive individualistic act. In a disciplined robot army of the right he went off on his own. Believe that and I'll tell you one about Weapons Of Mass Destruction.
