Light Show

The overly bright lights
burn off mystery and magic
nothing much left but Neoconmen
hiding an ace up their sleeve,

it keeps falling out
while they assure everyone,
"folks it's just an ordinary day's work
being indicted
is only
technically bad news."

Day in The Life --- A very old friend comes by with news. He's Gay now. When a friend tod me that it used to be a tabloid headline but with time and repitition it became a sidebar. He also had a bit of troubling news about how the daughter of an old friend married a genine lunatic. Now that's a story that goes above the fold. Actually our reunion dinner was a lot of fun and stimulated some excellent memories.
I prepared a chicken and root vegitable dish coked in a clay pot. The experimental addition of a bit of Mexican hot sauce really worked well.

Glad to see The Scooter go down. The key in his indictment is that the prosecutor is claiming he can document that Scooter knew that Valerie was a covert spook. If Scooter knew so did the other Bush leakers and that could provide for a spectacular future conspiracy indictment.

After The Fall?

Why is Bush Regime perishing in mud slides?
Not because of Democratic Party rain dances
bringing on an upheavals of slime and liberation.

Dubya's gang stomped on the CIA
forgetting just who best knows
how government's are brought down and out.

An infinite vacuum opening in the American drama
finding Dubya alone and afraid
in a world he never made
and
Democrats
knocking on any door
but having nothing to sell.

Day In The Life -- The National Lawyer's Guild is having a conference in Portland this weekend and some old friends are coming to town. Bob B is coming over for dinner tonight. Back in the 70s when we lived in the Catskills, Judy taught Sociology at New Paltz State and encouraged Bob to become a lefty lawyer (he was also Jessica's baby-sitter). He took Judy's advice but we lost contact, so tonight is a reunion.

I read Florence of Arabia by Christopher Buckley. It's very witty and passionate satiric novel about the totalitarian oppression of women in parts of the Arab world and one American woman's brave but somewhat bumbling attempt to change things. If you think the peace movement sometimes goes a little too easy on certain Arab places and people, this book is your meat.

The Three Rabbis is an OPB documentary about Portland Rabbis Yonah Geller, Emanuel Rose and Joshua Stampfer. These guys are unusual because they worked in the same town, represented different strains of religious interpretation and politics and managed for the most part to get along very well and set an excellent example for their congregations. Miraculously they worked for 40 years and made few enemies in the Jewish community. For those unacquainted with Mondo Jewish, this is an amazing accomplishment. The documentary offers some interesting background history on Jews in Oregon but works best when the rabbis and their wives do the talking. I also enjoyed the appearance of my Palestinian friend Frank Afranji who has worked very closely with Rabbi Stamfer in promoting peace and justice for both Palestinians and Israelis.

Do you remember when Bush, Cheney and the Neoconmen were trying to turn the CIA into their amen corner for war in Iraq, pressuring them to cook the evidence on weapons of mass destruction? And of course you certainly recall the Bush gang's outing of an undercover CIA agent. I believe The Company is now enjoying some grand jury pay back time in Washington DC.

Don't go dancing in the mean streets
because Cowgirl Harriet dropped out of the race,
she was an incompetent kook
who declared
different things
at different times
bout choice and freedom
but
she wasn't steely eyed brilliant,
a monster
of God and Fascism
patron Saint of erudition and back alley abortion,
the next designated hitman from hell.

In a beserk season

Day In The Life -- I almost never turn this space over to anyone but I received such a warm hearted e-mail this morning that I thought I would reprint it here, in hope that I would receive more like it. Actually I feel like saying that old line from SNL. "I'm not worthy."

------My unintroduced Friend, Thank you deeply for bringing tears to my hardened eyes by reading your memoirs of the greatest movers and shakers in my life. Particularly the treatment of Huey Newton and Bill Kunstler, not to mention all the others. I came to your site seeking info on the story behind Abbie's death as he and Tim Learys media persona's and writings made the greatest influence on my life. If I've ever had hero's, they were it.
I've also heard of you throughout the times mentioned and just wished to say THANK YOU for laying YOUR life on the line as well. Also for the support and danger you went through helping Abbie on the run. Hell, Stew, just for all the contribution you made to the whole 'sixties' scene. And I am sorry for what pain you have suffered from the loss of so many of your friends.
I don't wish to take up your time but I had to at least give you this. Thanks again for your balance in the sharing of your friends lives.------

We watched Dracula vs. Batman last night. It's natural that these two action icons would eventually cross swords since they both communicate to the public by means of Bat shtick. Animated in an exciting Japanese manner, the film slants heavy to Batman, but I always root for the vampire. After all undead is better than just being dead. I bet even the Pope would prefer being a vampire to a corpse.

Burn

2001 corpses
and we didn't see a single coffin
was the messiah in their ranks
or maybe a mass murderer?
Likely just life and its ordinary possibilities
of farting, television, a walk in the woods
and maybe a poem,
sentenced to death
by nightmares of power and pretense.
They lied us into Hell's rape rooms
and camped out in the circle of hypocrites
now proclaiming we would dishonor Heaven,
by leaving the flames
by admitting the lies.

Day In The Life -- I didn't get the usual e-mails stimulated by my appearance on KBOO. The callers into the show left something to be desired in the realm of rationality and now my e-mail list is greeted by the sounds of silence. I wonder if poor KBOO has lost its rational listening audience to Air America?
I was exhausted after the show. Imagine having a three way intense and serious conversation at 7:30 in the morning and it continues to 9 and you get up at 6. So I crashed for a couple of hours and woke up to the news that the Bush gang was now responsible for 2000 deaths in Iraq.
------
Judy and I watched Al Franken on The Daily Show last night. Franken seems more and more like he's scripting himself preparing for a run for the US Senate. To me, this seems like a strange career choice. We are probably at the brink of a new golden age of political satire, not a golden age of politics. Why would Al abandon something he does so well?

Lying Liars Getting Lumps

Tenet to Cheney to the rooting Scooter,
smoking guns exploding
in right wing's original face
those who lied us into Hell
went punishing tellers of truth
for pointing to soiled and bloody underwear,
Wilson revealed an Iraqi
"it got us into war" lie.
Cheney revealed Wilson's wife
lied for a living.

Will the Veep's undisclosed location
be moved to a bunker behind bars?
Al Capone murdered lots of people
but he got dumped in prison
for not paying his income tax.
Cheney murdered even more
but faces lock up
because of little lies told to nobody prosecutors.

In America it's the details
that trip you up.

Day In The Life -- I was just on KBOO's "The Uris Factor" in a three way discussion about the Grand Jury, perjury charges, the Bush administration and what may soon happen. It was an excellent exchange of facts and ideas, but all the phone callers just wanted to talk about their pet peeves and projects. When I go on something like this show, it's always my hope that someone out there will be inspired to think a little differently and perhaps with a bit more imagination. Obviously the person who called in asking if I now regretted not supporting Ralph Nader, doesn't fall in this category.
---
The Curse of the Were-Rabbit is a wonderful bit of animation that required 2.8 millions pounds of multi colored Plasticine. But what is great about this film is the never ending send ups of the Hollywood horror genre. Of course we have the ever frightening werewolf. When, at midnight, gentle Wallace turns into a giant monster rabbit bent on consuming all the vegetables in England, Lon Cheney Jr. must be rolling over in his grave, laughing. And then there are kudos to King Kong and Mr Hyde and perhaps the hunchback of Notre Dame.
Also the dog fight arcade airplane war between the good Grommit and the evil Red Baron deserves a big bow and a bigger wow. The film makes gentle fun of the Brits and their passion for gardening. It's a great way to lighten up a rainy day.

---
It looks like the Bush Administration is going to take a big hit over the Wilson/CIA affair. Bush is in a rotten mood because he hasn't caught a break in months. Maybe the Bushies will survive but maybe not. I remember when Nixon went down. Everyone said it could not happen and then it did happen. Progressives were in a very hopeful mood but eventually Reagan was elected and then there were two Bush administrations. If the Dubya gang walks the plank who will take their place? If you think nothing could be worse than Bush, remember we once thought nothing could be worse than Nixon.

Echo

I wuz framed
becoming major political slogan of Bush bandits
pleading their case
to an unforgiving heart
they once serenaded
with promises of permanent punishment politics.

Dubya's Devils are dead meat.
A cruel heart they cultivated without kindness
will not soften or go sweet.
Milk they once soured with hemlock,
now becoming national beverage
of downfall and demise.

Day In The Life -- We took it easy yesterday going to a neighborhood movie theater and reading the Sunday Times. An "adult video store" has opened right around the coner from us and its just down the block from Catholic Church property and a Church. Let's see if this produces any protest activity. Might be fun.

Sherlock Homes returned to the Masterpiece Theater with the gripping tale of the silk stocking murders. Holmes is an opium junky in this version and Dr. Watson is trying to help him kick the habit but the good doctor is also about to marry an attractive American woman who is up to the latest trends in psychoanalysis and insists on calling Holmes, Sherlock. The game is about the multiple murders of socially prominent woman who are finished off by having a silk stocking pushed down their throats. The action is fast paced and realistic with a never ending London fog. This is a very explosive and appealing version of Holmes who seems at times to be on the edge of self destruction.

High Rollers

Pigs in wild blue yonder
living the luxurious life
in airborne apartments

American plutocrats flying high
in their fat $200 mill planes
redecorated for 20 mill
dining at gourmet tables
sleeping on soft beds of clouds

do you wonder why
they fixed the election?

Day In The Life -- We went to the library's yearly sale of unwanted books and picked up some good ones at very low prices but I was very disappointed by the so called "classical literature" section. No Fitzgerald or Hemingway but tons of Herman Wouk? Classical literature indeed. Later on we went out with E and M, saw a flick and dined at a Persian restaurant. The Iranians are master rice makers.
--------

Good Night And Good Luck -- George Clooney directs and performs in one of the best American films made in a very long time. It's a high class docudrama about legendary newscaster Edward R Murrow's battle against a very sinister Senator, named Joe McCarthy. Murrow documents the case against the "red under every bed" McCarthy on his trail blazing black and white TV program See It Now and the Junior Senator from Wisconsin strikes back with threatening lies. David Stratharin is magnificent as Murrow, not only getting the speech intonations right, but also the broadcaster's contained but obvious fear. And a word for Frank Langella's portrayal (he once got his big break playing Dracula) of CBS president William Paley, who bounces back and forth from supporting Murrow to betraying him. Langella strikes just the right balance between the sinister and the sympathetic. Clooney made two brilliant decisions for his film. It should be in black and white (just like everything was back in the 50s) and McCarthy should play himself. Accept no substitutes, Clooney gives only documentary footage of McCarthy and the monster really does seem to drip blood.
