Power Pals

Miller's tale
playing to the powerful
loyal to her end
not remembering who told her
what and when
how convenient
cries a church lady
who might be sitting
on a grand jury
deciding if Judy
should go immediately back to jail.

A bedroom at the top of the stairs
is it worth the price?
--------------
Day In The Life--- Judy brought her Planned Parenthood staff over to our house for a day long retreat. I made the coffee but otherwise stayed upstairs. One retreater heard me scratching around and asked if those were animal sounds. Ah yes, Judy declared, it's my husband and he's an animal.

What a beautiful sunny fall day we had in Portland yesterday. We went out for a late afernoon walk, and Judy snapped some remaining flowers and fallen leaves photos. This morning the sun is shining. When I went out to get the papers, I couldn't help saying Good Morning, Morning. A nice day should be appreciated.

The NY Times is finally realizing that reporter Judith Miller's mendacity seriously damaged their paper's reputation. They are now trying to separate themselves from her bad behavior. But it may be too late. All her lies helped get America into a never ending Iraqi war and the Times was used to give Bush/Rove propaganda a clean air of perfect probity.
---
Apparently the leaves fell in New York without turning colors. Blame it on Bush.

Natural Parking Lots

Dubya's gang wants to party in National Parks
but repressive rules
won't let them bounce along in joyful tanks
spray painting
Jesus Was Here
on million year old rocks
that look something like an ancient temple
or Queen Victoria
if the light is right.

New freewheeling fun rules
letting Dubya's Devils
run wild off the road
in hideous Hummers hiding
secret armies of the nightmare
crashing through ancient arches of natural art
that weren't high enough
for Bush or barbarism.

Unwise invading the Goat-God's forest
causing Pan to panic,
now in his crazed red eyes
vengeance brews
and
Titans tremble.

Day In The Life -- I did a lot of cooking yesterday. First I turned the last of our tomato crop into winter's sauce. And then later prepared a curried chicken in stout and pineapples. I like working the recipes because, I get a chance to actually transform things and make them better. This is a role that our present Bush era denies me (and everyone else), so doing it in the kitchen is better than not doing it at all.
---
Judy and I have been watching the Colbert Report, staring the brilliant Stephen Colbert of Daily Show fame. Now he follows the Daily Show and offers a wicked and hilarious imitation and critique of right wing moronic pundits. We like the American Eagle who at the beginning of each show seems to turn on and attack the audience.
--
If the Bush gang goes ahead with its plans (see editorial in today's NY Times) to destroy our glorious National Parks, they should face a pissed-off pantheistic militia looking back at them in the morning mirror. They hate the Parks, because at present, they are the last place in America where money doesn't rule.

Dead End

Wilma targeting Florida
for devastating deadly days
but Jeb ain't a bit worried
cause he got Dubya
giving him permission
to be spending much less
on poor people's medical bills.

If you're broke and broken in Florida
ain't no help but a band aid and two aspirins
better opt for drowning
in oceans of storm and despair.
Call it,
God assisted suicide.

Day In The Life -- It was one of those days when high technology smiled on me. I received an e mail from a woman friend living in France, I hadn't seen, since maybe 1970. I guess she found me through my web site or this blogspot. Every so often something like this happens. An ancient friend is delivered to present times and it could only happen because of the Internet. Well, that's over doing it a bit, this summer Judy and I ran into an old Berkeley friend in the Museum Of Modern Art in NYC. Lucky I wrote a memoir which makes bringing people up to date a bit easier.

---
From Shtetl to Swing -- An excellent PBS documentary narrated by Harvey Fierstein about the role of immigrant Jewish culture in transforming American pop culture. I'm not talking about religion, the immigrant Jews brought with them an existential optimistic but ironic secular culture that blended with America and profoundly changed it. Many of the greats are shown performing, including Sophie Tucker, Al Jolson, the Marx Brothers, Irving Berlin and George Gershwin. And did you know that Yip Harburg's Somewhere Over The Rainbow was borrowed from an old Yiddish melody? Picture an immigrant singing it on a storm tossed ship headed for America. The main thesis of the documentary is that Jewish culture in America was very influenced by Black popular culture and style. This attraction culminated in the development of Swing and the first integrated Jazz bands. Ah, the Benny Goodman Quartet. What a fantastic story!

Sum Dum Goy

Rummy lectures
China's future leaders
against nationalism, militarism and authoritarianism.
They are a polite crowd
nobody giggles or throws a rice pie,
maybe they didn't catch his name.

He never looks into a mirror,
pointless
because of shame
it casts no reflection
anyway.

Day In The Life -- H put the finishing touches on my Hep C interview for the LA Free Press. It really tells the tale.

Bad news. A friend of mine who took the chemotherapy for Hep C recently received news (after the six month waiting period) that the virus had returned to his bloodstream. In other words, the treatment failed to cure him. Now is the time for him to gather information and plan his next step. He knows that his family and friends will support him no matter what he decides.
---------
Did you know that last Sunday, massive numbers of African-Americans and other minorities gathered in Washington, DC to honor the 10th Anniversary of the Million Man March? You might not know it because the media coverage was scant, dishonest or non-existent. By way of example, the NY Times only mentioned Farrakhan's speech and said there were "thousands of marchers." Thousands? That's what they also reported on the massive peace march which took place in DC some weeks ago. Actually there were several hundred thousand marching. The Boston Globe reported at least tens of thousands at the new Million Man March which unlike ten years ago, included women, Gays and various other oppressed groups. Jesse Jackson spoke as did Al Sharpton. But you wouldn't learn any of this from the NY Times.

Guarded Optimism

Dams breaking, levees collapsing
prices inflating, Iraq falling apart
big corporations on limitless looting spree
budget falling off tight rope
there is no net
to bounce the crash,
Dubya busy rehearsing spontaneous discussions,
Christians extend welcome mat to the apocalypse
and
Bush administration plans rule in Hell or prison,

while some few Jews fiddling on a roof
eat honey on New Year's bread
praying for sweetness in the flood.

-------
Day In The Life -- I just finished reading The March by E.L. Doctorow. General Sherman is deep in Confederate territory. His army captures and burns Atlanta and does similar work in the Carolinas. But Southern armies are still powerful and are putting up a mighty resistance. Doctorow offers us an amazing cast of characters including former slaves and slave owners, hustlers, psychos, journalists, photographers, ordinary soldiers and generals. Abe Lincoln even makes a riveting appearance. The author's style wins the war. He never lets the strong characters overwhelm the bloody march and its significance. Writing about war is a special literary form. You want the descriptions of death and destruction to be complete and uncensored but there must be no over dramatization or artifice. Hemingway had it down, and so did Tolstoy, maybe Isaac Babel did it best in Red Cavalry, his masterpiece on the Soviet Civil War. Now Doctorow does a splendid job of recalling another hideous civil war and he does it in a properly understated manner while catching each and every important detail of slaughter.

Mother Night -- Adapted from Vonnegut's novel (I believe I caught a glimpse of the author in a crowd scene) , this quirky film is about an American playwright (played excellently by Nick Nolte) who lives in Nazi Germany in the 30s and is married to a famous and beautiful German actress. He is recruited by the American War Department into remaining in Germany and becoming a spy for the good guys. The hitch is that even after the war, the truth about him can never be officially revealed. He will always be considered a traitor who did highly effective propaganda radio broadcasts for the Nazis. And indeed his work for the Nazis is so well done that even he isn't sure if he is more a traitor than a spy. The plot, especially the post war aspect develops in a very improbable way, involving Russian spies, American Christian Nazis, Holocaust survivors and a fascinating appearance of Eichman in prison. The film probes an interesting and relevant dilemma. Can you go overboard in support of a moral cause and wind up being just like, what you most strongly opposed. Mother Night seems to say Yes.

Happy Days

Americans celebrating Iraqi election
by bombing a village
killing lots of civilians
who probably voted the wrong way
their lives unworthy of democracy.

Their houses near
where six Americans were freshly killed,

dying so the Iraqis could freely perish
only a day later.
They did not die in vain.

Day In The Life -- Hammond and I are putting the finishing touches on his interview with me about my Hep C chemo experiences. It is targeted for the newly revived LA Free Press. Judy and I went to Cafe Castagna for our favotite hamburgers and then returned home and watched HBO's Rome. In Egypt Caesar meets a very sexy Cleopatra. I'm sure they didn't dine just on vegetables.

Maybe the Democrats are trying to beat the Republicans using Ali's rope-a-dope method? Letting the Republicans beat themselves up. It's not a bad approach, but they should remember that at a certain point Ali came off the ropes slugging and knocked his opponent out. It's time for the Dems to come off the ropes.

Let's Dance

Can't float down stream
in this kind of music
cause your head
would go crashing on sharp rocks
but dance floor makes for a million moves
total tolerance
nobody doing the same steps
lunging everywhere
going no where
enjoying it anyway.

----
Day In The life -- We discovered a whole other aspect to the Ridgefield Wild Life Preserve in Washington. They were having a Bird Fest celebration in the town which seemed to be mostly Bluegrass musicians strolling and strumming down the main drag, but there were people offering information on Fest plans and in that context we learned that there was a separate hiking are on the Preserve which is wetland territory and strikingly beautiful. The area also features an impressive Indian long house knock off. The weather was slightly overcast and that made for some exciting mixes of light and shadow, reflecting on picturesque bodies of water and amazing trees with wild shapes.

We went to Planned Parenthood's annual rock event (see poem above) and although they weren't exactly playing our music, Judy and I did tolerably well on the dance floor. The place was very packed and the mood was extremely festive. The happy event came complete with anti choice demonstrators making ugly noises in the street and having absolutely no effect on the event.

Is Bush going to disintegrate before our eyes just like Nixon? Probably not. He'll stay off camera. Also he seems to have more buffers between himself and his crimes. It will be more difficult to pin anything directly on him. And who knows, maybe Islamic fanatics will come to his rescue (again).
