Robots In Hell

Firefights burning bodies
of new Arabs to slaughter
for American soldiers somewhere in Syria
on hellish journey through Bushian hangovers
of lost empires
blown away in desert sands
where the emperor is grotesquely tangled
in court intrigues
forgetting where his soldiers die
catastrophe proceeds on automatic
now running the Cambodia program.

Day In The Life -- I had a mad dream about the late Jerry Rubin. Except for my wife he was the person who I was closest too back in the 60s. In my dream Jerry was still alive but very sick, he shrank to half his size, than in the dream I remembered he was dead and he grew back to full size. He and his wife were involved in a political dispute in Texas with George Bush and a referendum was deciding the issue (I never found out what the issue was) but the results were unclear. It's strange, I was also close to Abbie, Eldridge and Ochs and they may occasionally show up in my dreams but they are always extras. Jerry stars in my dreams. He was a very insistent guy.

Mortal Combat -- Annihilation. A video game continues to run amuck producing yet another film about scantily clad sexy women and steroidal men beating each other to death. In this one some evil demons from another dimension decide to conquer and wipe out the human race. Naturally the martial arts WWF trained humans fight back. The special effects look like they were purchased in Wall-Mart but are sometimes very funny. My main complaint is that these flicks are all violence and no sex.

End Times

Sky comes crashing
on Bush bunker
just two degrees
of separation from Hell

Reporters feeling it's safe now
to throw off covers
rolling out of embed
and
pointing to Bush twitches, sneers
and he hasn't mastered language
unless cursing at a secretary.

Pacing the moving carpet
Dubya wonders where the magician is hiding
who always spun the perfect plot
but isn't picking up his phone.

An unread newspaper
finds
the wobbly wizard
testifying
before a Grand Jury
in icey sweat.

Day In The Life -- Judy and I spent the better part of Yom Kippur in synagogue services. One of the tasks of religion is to offer a chance for people to expunge guilt and forgive themselves (officially known as God forgiving them). Judaism doesn't have once a week confession but once a year and for ten days (known as the days of awe) Jews get a chance to repair themselves, by making apologies to those they hurt, praying, studying and doing good deeds. It all culminates on Yom Kippur where you fast for a day and chant endless prayers of self abnegation. As a kid I hated the day because by mid afternoon my mother was freaked out by a lack of carbs and she turned into a religious fanatic. But these days I am able to find some meaningful pattern and inner exercise in Yom Kippur's rituals and it does offer the opportunity to be honest with myself. As mentioned in an earlier blog Judy and I read a list of collective sins (the list appears in that recent blog) to the congregation and from many comments we heard our declarations were greatly appreciated. I'm not sure that anybody gets any better from these practices but perhaps it restrains us from getting any worse.
-------
Dave -- A wholesome movie to see just after Yom Kippur. Dave, refreshingly portrayed by Kevin Kline, is a hired double for the President. The hideous right wing Commander In Chief gets a stroke while shtupping his secretary and "Haldeman like" connivers manipulate Dave into pretending, on a permanent basis that he is the President. Dave goes on to outfox the connivers, repair the country and even improve on the President's failed marriage. It's a sweet fantasy after a day of repentance and hope.

With Good Intentions

Bono be raising bread for Santorum
cause they both are men of faith,
Blacks supported brother Clarence for the Supremes
now he cuts their throats.
Is Harriet becoming
an overnight sweetheart sister against sexism?
Is Bush an anti-patriarch for promoting her?
Will abortion be abolished by Feminists?

Through a cracked glass
a fascist is smiling.

Day In The Life -- The Jewish great day of repentance starts tonight. Yes, "Year in God" fans it's Yom Kipper time and once again Jews fast and tell the big one that they are very sorry. Tonight's ritual includes the al chet service where the congregation pleads guilty to all kinds of scripted sins. But because these sins seem so dated and inappropriate to this congregation, Judy and I were asked a few years back to write up a list of contemporary sins for us to read off before the entire congregation that we are all pleading guilty to. We change some of the sins every year in relation to what evil events occurred in the world. For your consideration here are this year sins--

We Have Sinned:

by ignoring cries for help from those around us

by not being grateful for our blessings

by thinking about Jewish values only on holy days

by not actively opposing an endless, savage and destructive war

by not actively resisting corrupt, cruel and incompetent rulers

by rationalizing a world wide gulag of torture

by not rocking the boat

by forgetting about Jerusalem

by forgetting about New Orleans

by forgetting about the wall that separates the West Bank and Israel

by yielding to confusion and fear and by falling into passivity

by not thinking independently and for ourselves

by not defending reproductive choice.

by not defending freedom of sexual preference and equality of all human beings

by not loving enough

by forgetting that we are co-creators of the universe

by acquiescing as global warming destroys our planet

by driving huge, gas guzzling automobiles

by allowing multinational corporations to function outside the law and democratic control

by allowing our government to rob from the poor and give giant tax breaks to the rich.

by allowing greed, in others and in ourselves, to go unchecked

by not feeding the poor and the starving

by not easing the debts and burdens of the impoverished - globally and here at home.

by not opposing laws that promise security but deprive us of our basic freedom and civil liberties.

by not visiting the sick, the infirmed and by so doing relieving their
suffering.

by speaking loshen hara

by hiding from our wrongdoings

by putting a stumbling block before the blind

by not searching for truth wherever it lies

by not recognizing the divine spark that dwells at the center of our
being

by not forgiving each other and asking God for forgiveness

For all our sins, may the force that makes forgiveness possible, forgive
us, pardon us and grant us atonement

Changes

Poor people don't have money
so they don't have power
when they drown in their living rooms
politicians looks sad for five minutes
and
then turn the soggy turf
into gambling casinos
and
Yuppie condos for Republican voters.

How lucky the souls of black folk are
to be free of Sodom New Orleans
now in Utah
the Mormons will wash them white.

--------
Day In The Life --I started reading The March by E. L. Doctorow. So far it's great. Its another American "on the road" novel. Only this time we are laying waste to Georgia under the guidance of General Sherman. The big Yom Kippur starts tomorrow night and goes through the next day. (A 24 hour fast!) As usual Judy and I were asked to compose a list of contemporary sins and to read them to the congregation. It is our yearly contribution at making Jewish Republicans (there are a few) sweat and to inspiring the other 95% of the Congregation to lofty deeds.
---
The Alien vs. The Predator -- The most exciting contest since Hulk Hogan took on Andre the Giant. Its scary because it takes place in a night time Arctic waste land and in dark unexpected underground pyramid chambers. Forget about the plot since most of the characters die early on. It's a battle between a very likable tough black woman and the omnivorous Alien and (don't ask me why) the Alien fighter has the Predator (a tin can cyborg from outer space) as a tag team partner.

Holy Moly

The preacher man knows something holy
about the nanny lawyer
so he's supporting Harry for the Supremes.

Must be Karl Rove whispered sacred words
of hermetic source
from mad states of beatitude,
saying she's against all abortion
and
figures her cowboy hero
can torture whoever he likes.
--------
Day In The Life -- M and H came over last night for dinner. I made a spicy shrimp Creole and Judy a garden grown cucumber salad. We all enjoyed a pleasant evening of denouncing Bush and praising the Portland Art Museum.
I also reminisced about the good old days when I was on chemotherapy.
----
Kung Fu Hustle is yet another over the top Hong Kong spawned hilarious satire on martial arts movies. The fight scenes are so outside the edge of possibility you ought to be watching a cartoon but these are humans really doing some impossible moves aided by trickster technology. In this flick a number of Kung Fu masters take on the terrible Ax Gang. And who do you think wins? One thing I've noticed about these crazed Easterns, is that no matter how zany the action, the films never turn nihilistic. Respect is always paid to Confucian ethics, Taoist magic and Buddhist compassion.

Many Returns

A couple of months
from my 66 birthday
too bad no one lives to be 666.

Route 66 kept alive only
as tourist/biker nostalgia
and T shirts.

Having been labeled once
by New Yorker magazine
as genuine relic of another era
can I expect any better
than fond memories
of Richard Nixon's hatred?

----
Day In The Life -- Judy and I went to the newly improved Portland Art Museum. What fun. They have a commendable collection of Impressionist triumphs and a mind blowing room filled with Lichtenstein, the paintings are fine, the sculptures, fantastic. Also there is lots of Post 60's experimental stuff. Coming back from a tour of NYC museums, Judy (with her Ph.D. in sociology) enjoyed comparing the Portland scene with the Big Apple. Of course NYC collections are bigger and deeper and much more expensive. And then there are the museum guards. In NYC they are omnipresent. In the Museum of Modern Art, they are almost exclusively large black men. Since most of the museum customers are white, it always reminds me of Santa Rita (a jail where I did some time) in reverse. And then there is Manhattan's splendid Jewish Museum. It's security system must have been designed by Israeli Intelligence. When you enter the place, it's like boarding an El Al plane to Israel. In Portland there were few guards and they were quite amiable and little in the way of an obtrusive security set up. Also the crowd mood was different. People seemed more relaxed, friendlier and their kids actually seemed to be enjoying themselves.
--
We watched a documentary on who murdered Joe Stalin. The investigator comes to the conclusion that it was probably Stalin. Suicide? No. It's just that everyone was so afraid of him, that we he got a stroke, one and all were too frightened to do anything. And besides all the good Jewish doctors had been thrown in prison.
