Cursing Darkness

Has night fallen
forever?
We ask at the most beautiful of sunsets
wondering if light will ever return,
fascist darkness eats up my coastlines
what comes next?
Nothing works as the sun goes down
if it also rises
what broken down Babylon of Bush
will be seen?

Day In The Life -- Judy and I are preparing for NY. Unlike the last time, we will see a lot of friends both in the city and upstate. 100 degree August didn't seem a good time to see people but the fall is great for the folks. The Catskills may have the most colorful autumn leaves in the world. That's why we once decided to live there. There is also a fantastic exhibit of 19th and 20th century Russian painting to be seen at he Guggenheim.
------
American History X -- A young American Nazi guy abandons his philosophy of hatred while doing time. He is strongly influenced by a Black prisoner who works with him in the laundry and cheers him up and saves his life. But when the reformed racist gets out of the joint he discovers that good intentions and a healthier soul don't work miracles. This is a low budget Indy production with high values and fine performances.

A Ghost

Tired voice imitating itself
no longer infuriating,
he began by sitting at my table
making fun of fascists
but that became a poor career choice.

Betraying his wit
to the other side
he became a neo con darling of hating Clinton,
a funny fresh voice against liberal hypocrisy
an over dressed and obviously drunken critic
of very powerful people.

Now on the tube
he rambles and stumbles
all over himself,
his idiots and ideas rule the world
and
he knows they all suck,
he's paid well to defend them
so he just echoes my old song,
its the system sucking, not the Republicans,
a sad sack at last,
the booze remains
the brilliance is over.

Day In The Life --Dom came over for dinner. Jessica called from SF. Dom answered the phone (at my instigation) claiming he was me at a younger age (Dom is very much younger than me). My daughter thought it was Paul Krassner playing a joke. Strange, Paul is actually five years older than me.

We are off to the East on Wednesday, NYC again and a large peace demo in DC and the Catskills in the fall. Also lots of old friends.

------
Judy and I saw HBO's Rome last night. Julius Caesar has conquered the City and last night he got the gold. There something edgy and rugged about this version. Like Caesar is going to go into Al's saloon and maybe get his head blown off in Deadwood.

Old former associate PJ O'Rourke was on Bill Maher last night, a very long time ago he was part of the young NY Yippie scene but success spoiled him and so did the Republicans. In old age he's grown boring, now apologizing for right wing stuff that deep down he obviously doesn't believe in. But he can't return to a spirit, movement and time that no longer exists.

Robo Yippie

Getting through the night
not much easier than the day
living in an outmoded thinking machine
breaking down with age
and
repairs not working
needs a diversion of love
that makes
creaking gears and nightmares
worth the effort.

City Of New Orleans

A City is drowning in swamps, snakes
and despair,
hope is franchised to cronies
with suspect bids,
the media proclaims
when everyone is to blame
nobody is at fault

2

Portland headline reads
"occupying army in New Orleans"
and
they mean it as a compliment,

Bush gang waited
till anarchy ruled,
didn't want soldiers going in as dogooders
throwing old black Joe a lifesaver,
instead they came as routers of insurgency.

Polls proclaim 9 in 10 of white America
say race had nothing to do with it
but if you can't beat the colored in Baghdad
go smash 'em in Louisiana.

3

Bush walking on water
in the Big Easy river of shit
won't impress the locals,
unless his mother drowned.

Cheap carny tricks aren't earning forgiveness
on this Yom Kippur,
cause when the saints come marching in
Dubya ain't being in that number.

4

100 billion bucks rebuilding Iraq,
throw in
another 100 billion for Big Easy
and
abolish inheritance tax,
and
any tax on the rich,
borrow bread from China,
give Halliburton its fair share
and
smash gay marriage and abortion,

that's Dubya's Ownership Society,
he owns us.

5

Barbara Bush
figures its fine for poor people
to be living on stadium cots
because its probably an improvement.

Someone off camera
told Cheney to go "fuck himself"
but
Dick was too busy looking serious.

On some glorious day
Dubya will again be sunning his ass
on Trent Lott's porch.

Oh, where is Jim Garrison
now
when we really need him?

6

Why are we on this journey?
Who picked the Captain?
Why is Moby Dick smiling?

Day In The Life -- Judy and I played the consumer game and journeyed out to the Troudale Mall and Costco for clothing and ketchup. When my mother went shopping on Ave U in Brooklyn in the 1940s every product had its own store. Vegetables, meat (kosher), hardware, eggs and fish. She walked up and down Ave U with her shopping cart trying to save a few pennies. Now Costco sells everything under the same roof, from vegetables to giant HD television. My mother used to run in to her friends and chat endlessly in English and Yiddish but I've never met anyone I know, in Costco. Conglomeration kills community.

Resident Evil Apocalypse -- An evil international corporation spreads zombie virus all over a major North American City (Toronto) and then abandons the town to its destruction. Sounds like New Orleans. Of course there is the usual bold little band of resisters (its all adapted from a video game) , who fight the zombies, including zombie dogs and a mutated super monster. There are some great interior shots, including a very scary sequence filmed in a large church. The action is riveting. In the end Toronto is nuked. This was very much to the pleasure of Judy who grew up there.
