Dumb And Dumber

Forty per cent of them
would support Bush
even if he resorts to cannabalism.
Dubya can swim in the swamps of failure
and they trust his leadership,
is it because they hate government
wanting only for its failure
and Bush succeeds in failing?
Cause they think that end time is here.
Christ is about
to come riding in on a white horse
and its time to feed gays to the lions?
Maybe cause he keeps cuting their taxes
even of it makes black people
drown in their living rooms.
Or are they just a plain stupid
booboisie
taking pleasure
that the President
is their mirror image
and even dumber
than their worst idea?

Day In The Life -- I made a lemon chicken dish for dinner. Cut up chicken, lemon rind, lemon juice, smashed garlic, a little chicken soup stock, thyme and oregano, put it all in an the oven on a baking dish, and it comes out fantastic. What a delicate taste. And Judy made up a great salad of green peas and our back yard tomatoes. My left shoulder still aches from that Pneumonia vaccine shot. And it just seemed like a little prick. Is this a political metaphor? Friend L in Woodstock is arranging a reunion dinner for us when we arrive there, Judy and I used to live in the Catskills and it will be nice seeing some old friends.
-----
Once Upon A Time In China 3 -- More Jet Li. More fantastic fight scenes of incredible artistry, topped off by a never ending war between large numbers of brilliantly colored paper dragons (remember Mao?). Interestingly, the foreign enemy in this one is 19th century Russia.

Newer Sodom

By an act of God
New Orleans will be a Republican city,
don't let too many Blacks come back
Yuppify the housing
build McMansions to the sky,

in praise of He
who struck down Black Sodom
with water and fire.

Give billions to deserving rich
and build everywhere
theme park Newer Orleans,
plastic French Quarter imitations
of celebration
and white joy.
---
Day In The Life -- I went for blood tests today and also a Pneumonia vaccine shot. A cop followed us in to the Kaiser parking garage. Judy made a right turn where it wasn't allowed. But the cop was Portland pleasant and only gave us a warning. The nurse had trouble drawing blood and had to stick the needle in both my arms. When I received my Pneumonia shot the nurse asked me how old I was. When I said 65, she replied that I would never need another shot. And I answered. "you mean I won't live long enough to need one?" She avoided an answer.

Watch the rebuilding of New Orleans become a massive welfare program for the Bush corporations and the gentry. It's a fantastic opportunity for the right wingers to remake the city and Louisiana. Ah, poor Huey Long must be turning over in his grave.

Godzilla vs. Mecha Godzilla --Featuring a robot Godzilla, a very cute kid Godzilla and the old Monster Lizard himself. After a long lumbering brawl the robot is turned to a pile of junk.

Performance

Carefully coached
Mr. Roberts won't tell us
a damn thing about his plans,
just humbly assuring you
he's a modest guy
who loves the law.

Images but no ideas,
a dagger is not pulled
an ironic villain goes unscathed.

The Democrats huff and puff
but this isn't New Orleans
and
nobody's house is falling in.
--------------

Day In The Life -- Coming home from the doctor after a full and painful examination of my prostate, Judy and I got in a cursing contest with a guy in a Hummer. He was parked in a manner that was blocking the entire road. Judy honked, he gave her the finger, she returned the finger and drove on. I thought the little drama over but Herr Hummer followed us home and the cursing went nuclear. When we weren't exchanging fingers and fuck you's (I grew up in Brooklyn) the guy said something about "You people have to learn this is a free country and I can do anything I want." He added something about "putting us in jail." Some of our good neighbors were around and they kept a calming lid on things. Afterwards I realized I had just been in the presence of pure Bushamania. A Hummer guy, (we have a neo-Volkwagen) who thinks that, by right of money and machine, he may rule the road and the world. Friend Hammond described the incident as "elite road rage."

This has been a tough week. And I have blood tests on Friday but at least my dealings with Hollywood have been resolved. They have agreed to my price. Fortunately we will be going east soon and we will have a chance to view the Catskills in the fall. Ah, can't wait.

Contact -- A woman scientist who lost both her parents early on, has for unacknowledged reasons devoted her life to making contact with ET's. She raises the funding and eventually succeeds. The film is more about motivation than action (although there are some fantastic special effects). Created during the Clinton era, its made to appear like Bill is actually part of the movie. And the film deserves credit for its ugly portrayal of religious extremists who believe communicating with ET is a violation of god's law.

Indictment

The old folks home was abandoned
so was the hospital,
the old folks drowned
the DA is calling it murder
but Bush deserted
an entire city
and
the people perished,
oh where is Jim Garrison when we need him?

--------
Day In The Life --The 25 year old daughter of an NY associate came over -- and I gave her some leads on making friends in Portland. I made a fantastic gazpacho last night, using our back yard tomatoes and cucumbers. I got the idea by reading the food edition of the NewYorker. See, I told you that turning into a Yuppie was a side effect of chemotherapy.
-------

The I Inside -- If you like being scared by your own brain, this is your movie. A thirtyish guy wakes up in the hospital, and he can't remember the last two years of his life. Then he starts having terrifying memories that seem more like time travel than recollections. What he learns about himself should make him prefer amnesia. The film makes use of all the standard props for mind terror. The spiral staircase, the oversized elevators, a mysterious corpse, long dark hallways and threatening doors. The pace is great, it drags you in and make you share in the fear and confusion.

We Won

Local headline read
"occupying army in New Orleans"
and
they meant it as a compliment,

Bush gang waited
till anarchy ruled,
didn't want soldiers going in as dogooders
throwing old black Joe a lifesaver,
instead they came as crushers of insurgency.

Polls proclaim 9 in 10 of white America
say race had nothing to do with it
but if you can't beat the colored in Baghdad
go smash 'em in Louisiana.
---------

Day In The Life --I've been remembering my time as a regular guest on Phil Stanford's talk radio program back in the Clinton era. It was a mixed bag program mixing right wing with left and I was the left. The highlight of my tour of duty was debating (via phone) the leader of an Alabama militia. I've been thinking about this program recently because of New Orleans and all the talk about how the Bush gang gutted FEMA, well, back then Clinton was building up FEMA and the right wing hated it. They saw that agency as the new world order's chosen instrument of destroying America and imposing world government. FEMA would declare martial law and Africa would take over. It's no surprise that the Bushies have wrecked FEMA, it not an oversight or stinginess or stupidity. It comes from a long standing ideological intention and as a result people drowned in hospitals and old folks homes.
-------
October Sky -- The true story of Homer Hickam who was a Cape Canaveral rocket scientist whose father was a West Virginia coal miner and his culture was Hillbilly. Dad wanted him in the mine and was threatened by his son's ambition and activities. Especially the part about getting his friends together and trying to build rockets for a high school science competition. This is a coming of age movie where rocketry replaces sex. There is also plenty of great 50s rock n' roll. If you think rocket scientists only happen among Germans and Jews, think again, the Hillbilly's also played their part.

Repent

Bush walking on water
in the Big Easy swamp of death
wouldn't impress the locals,
unless his mother drowned.

Cheap carny tricks won't earn forgiveness
on this Yom Kippur,
cause when the saints come marching in
Dubya ain't gonna be in that number.

--------
Day In The Life -- Judy had yet another Planned Parenthood event, this one about politics and politicians. There was a good turnout. I stayed home and made another round of tomato and bread soup, the tasty tomatoes coming from our garden. I put some of it in the freezer so when Jessica and her gang show up on Thanksgiving, they can share in our backyard harvest.

---
Where the hell are the Democrats? Huey Long built his amazing populist appeal around the last horrible Louisiana flood. But all the Democrats can do is raise points of proper procedure, not visions of something better.
------
Did you see where the Pentagon organized a pro war march in Washington. That's a first. The military organizing politically motivated civilian marches. Welcome to the new order. And you couldn't go on it unless you registered. No signs were allowed, just right wing T shirts. Oh, why don't these fascists just go and fuck themselves?
--
HBO's new series Rome is cool. Lots of sex, crucifixion, politics, matter of fact slave whipping and an exciting look at class war for real. It's sort of a Deadwood version of Rome.

At Sea

Down dark corridors
dead man walking
in air of doom.

A City is drowning in despair
and
hope is franchised to cronies
with suspect bids,
the media screams
when everyone is to blame
nobody is at fault

Why is he on this journey?
Who picked the Captain?
Why is Moby Dick smiling?

-------
Day In The Life -- Planned Parenthood's annual Margeret Sanger event was a great success. Held in a large heated tent (it didn't rain and wasn't very cold) in a beautiful garden with great food, it couldn't miss. And best of all, the speakers were eloquent and timely. Much significant reference was made to Katrina and what the hurricane revealed about American society and it shortcomings. Judy and her staff did a great job, putting it together and making it work.
------
The guy who told Dick Cheney to "go fuck yourself" is an ER doctor who also plays in alternative bands. He lost his house in the Mississippi part of the flood. For his speaking frankly and from the heart, the good doctor was handcuffed and questioned by military police. They then admitted he didn't break any laws and let him go.
----------

Belle Epoque -- It an hilarious sexy Spanish comedy directed by Fernando Trueba and set in, of all places, Spain, moments before the outbreak of a blood bath civil war. Its about freedom, sex, love art and friendship. A young soldier goes AWOL for political reasons, he supports the new Republic against the old Monarchy and he discovers a sensual utopia presided over by an aging artist and consisting of his four young beautiful daughters. It is a dream fantasy come true and great for much sex and laughter. Alas, we in the audience know that revolution, counter revolution and war is just on the horizon. The Utopia is glorious but its days are sadly and seriously numbered.
