Why Did He Die?

Why did that Sheehan boy
get blown away?
Was it for those WMD that weren't there.
But maybe might have been?

He was supposed to be greeted as a liberating hero
Sheehan of Arabia
but got killed.
Dubya declared
it was all about democracy and freeing women

Casey is a corpse
because he fought for free elections,
a democratic constitution
which is creating an Islamic Republic
in Iranian Iraq.

Jihadist Casey
died for Allah.

Day In The Life -- I touched up a few of my poems and read Jane Fonda's autobiography. It's an interesting mix, between a feminist "I was oppressed" and "I had a great time " and learned and grew. First husband Vadim ultimately turns out to be more likable than I imagined. Now second husband Tom is about to enter the scene. Tom is not only her husband but Judy and my former roommate. I can't wait to see how she describes him.
--------
Once Upon A Time In Mexico -- Hitman, bandit and macho revolutionary, El Mariachi is back. Played by Antonio Banderas, he is mixed up with a crazy CIA agent (Johnny Depp) who wear a CIA T-shirt at a bull fight. Naturally there is a murderous corrupt general and a drug cartel. It's a kind of dark comedy with romantic undertones about Mariachi's murdered wife. The best part is the flashy bravado shown by the Banderas character when he kill countless bad guys. Depp is also madly impressive after he has both his eyes gouged out.

Just So

Tied to a Hitchens post
the Daily Show
imprisoned in crap,
was he always so stupid?

----------

Day In The Life -- Judy and I went to the "Last Thursday" art walk on Alberta last night. The are a number of galleries in the area and on the last Thursday of the month they play host to tons of curious guests. But Last Thursday on Alberta is much more than that, there are hundreds of young people strolling the streets, packing restaurants, selling trinkets, playing instruments, getting stoned and having a fantastic New Orleans type time of it. Sometimes the ageing Alberts wish they could be forty years younger and wear the weird costumes and dance the wild dances of playfull youth. Such were our feelings last night. But we have no complaint, we had the Sixties. Was there a luckier generation?

Correction

Didn't want to kill the son of a bitch
he just wanted the bastard kidnapped
like Gordon Liddy
planned to snatch up the Yippies
and
dump 'em in Mexico.

Couldn't deposit Chavez in Mexico
cause they'd make some kind of hero
out of his sorry ass
better leave Hugo
in the preacher's
Club Guantanamo TV studio.

He'll ask him hard questions,
knowing how to get
all the right answers.

Day In The Life -- My website hits continues (for me) to be off the charts and I'm getting a lot of e-mails supporting or criticizing my piece on fascism which appeared here, and in CounterPunch and yesterday in The Smirking Chimp. Fascism, it seems is a topic that lot's of people have their own private ideas on. Some feel America has always been fascist, other that it is in no way that system, and many (including me) that its on the way and that a lot of it, but not everything, has already arrived. I guess it all depends on your definition.

There were rumors of another Cindy vigil in Portland, on Alberta. We went driving around but couldn't find it.

-----
The Island Of Dr. Moreau -- Yet another film version of H. G. Wells novel. Marlon Brando is the original intelligent designer, a very weird super fat decadent scientist who experiments with animals and turns them into semi humans. Eventually this causes an animal farm style revolt and much blood shed and silliness. But Brando is always fun.

Determined

Bush ranting on
about great numbers he's killed
in holy war
being his sacred obligation
to keep on killing,
cause otherwise
the shed blood
would be betrayed
by no longer killing,
and so
the First Jogger screams atthe press,
"I'm gonna stay the corpse."

-------
Day In The Life-- My article about the rise of American fascism that appeared in yesterday's blog also showed up in the online edition of CounterPunch. As a result, the hits to my website dramatically spiked and I've received a pile of e-mails reacting to the piece, including one from a friendly ex-marine another from a somewhat sectarian mate in Australia and yet another from a right winger urging me to consult Webster's Dictionary for the truth.

E-mailers made some good points. The political persecution of gays is a sign of the presence of fascism and the same applies to the Bush's practice of the big lie (and of his followers lying no matter how much they are disproved.) One e-mailer quoted a recent Webster definition of fascism to disprove me, yet another writer went back to a 1938 edition of Webster to defend my point of view. I guess in 1938, fascism had not yet committed its greatest totalitarian crimes and so it comes closer to what is now happening in America.

I still marvel at this electronic publishing. You write an article one day, it is published the next, and that very same day you are in correspondence with those who write letters to the editor. I hope that doesn't mean that your work is even more quickly forgotten.

Kung Phooey - A silly but funny takeoff on martial arts films and especially the Kung Fu TV series. Lots of puns and physical jokes dot the landscape and so does a running assault on the stereotyping of the Chinese people in ordinary martial arts movies. Mostly its fun but there could be a few more fight scenes.

Eye For An Eye

Pat Robertson put out a fatwa
on Hugo Chavez,
he wants the Venezuelan president bumped off
and
he's not relying on the power of prayer.

For how long will Christians allow their faith
to be a breeding ground for murder?
Isn't it time Tony Blair closed down
violence prone Churches
and foreign born extremist Christians
were deported from Oklahoma?
For how long will FCC bureaucrats permit
fanatical Christians
to be buying up TV stations
using our airways
for their fanatical views?

Chavez might give America
a brief time
to turn over Robertson
otherwise
it's gonna be shock and awe,
war crimes trials
and
a new constitution.

Fascism In America --Are we there yet?
by Stew Albert

Is America going fascist? Or has the cursed event already happened? It depends on your definition of fascism. What usually occurs in a fascist scenario?

--- Labor unions are weak and the right to strike is denied by law. In Bush's America, the unions and their solidarity are extremely weak. The right to strike is still permitted by law, but strikes seldom happen and when they do, as in the current case of Northwest Airlines, scabs are brought in and management and the White House collude about how best to crush the workers. A merging of giant corporations and the State is well along.

---- Civil liberties are declining in number and the right to assert them grows increasingly chancy. When the Patriot Act is combined with a variety of authoritarian laws passed during the Clinton administration and fanatics are placed in charge of the secret police, those who do speak out against the government must carefully watch their words. Much of what was once permitted to rebels is now against the law. Indeed, with secret trials, undisclosed prisons and torture, one may question to what extent the law actually still exists.

---The increasingly Draconian regime faces a weak, dispirited and divided opposition. America is almost a de facto one party state where the Democrats pay Bush the highest compliment by trying to imitate him. And many in the radical left and progressive movements (Cindy excepted) aren't able to go beyond silly sectarianism or tactical and organizational incompetence.

--- The rise and glorification of irrational philosophy. The current government assault on scientific thought in the name of Christian extremism and phobic nationalism easily fills that requirement. Additionally, a cultural war rages where authoritarian religious values deride and delegitimize their opponents as practitioners of decadence and treason.

---Fascism tends to be warlike and criminally aggressive. The invasion of Iraq combined with the flag waving, ultraviolence and official big lies does the trick. And the ongoing threats to Syria and Iran strengthens the case.

---- We usually find a "Duce" in charge. A character created by image manipulation and propaganda. Every attempt has been made to put Bush over as a triumph of the will cowboy hero who flies big airplanes and struts on flight decks in his special uniform. The effort to create a sneering superman hasn't completely worked because Dubya comes across as a little too dumb for the task.

---Racism is usually part of the fascist mix. The post 9/11 antidemocratic assault on Arabs and certain Muslim Asians combined with the panic and minute man vigilantism taking place on the Mexican border satisfies this similarity.

---Free elections no longer take place although fascism may permit some stage managed electoral activity. George Bush was not elected President in 2000. The Presidential election was fixed in Florida. Doubts continue about the integrity of the 2004 election. There is authentic concern about the introduction of non paper trail computer voting. And Republicans are redistricting to assure their Congressional power.

The leaders of this fascist construction have been following a successful right wing version of Gramscian analysis. They have gradually been building an authoritarian culture within the framework of ordinary civil society and have now reached a point of power where they have begun reconstructing the State.

When making judgments about fascism's presence we should not just look at the final totalitarian model that developed in Europe during the 1930s. Fascism passed through various stages and wasn't born overnight in its final horrible form. And it's possible that America will never go the full route. It may even develop am Americo-fascism with a human face. But there is a difficulty with this speculation. The fascisms of Europe evolved in opposition to the rise of the proletariat and the challenge of socialism. Hence it included and corrupted certain aspects of socialism in its practice. It always contained an element of welfare state in its structure and defined itself as a middle way between liberal capitalism and socialism.

American fascism is flowering in a post socialist era in which global capitalists feels fully free to bury the welfare state. Because of this historical circumstance, American fascism has within itself the potential for an unearthly collective barbarism.

Certainty

Dog days of August
not much different from January,
war and rumors of war
dominate the mind and soul
and
invisible corpses haunt our dreams.

Count on it
come January
George Bush will still be on vacation.

Day In The Life -- We went to the Ridgefield Bird Preserve. Not many birds were present, a cope of herons, a gull and lots of ducks but it was Edenesque beautiful. We were there in the later afternoon and a gentle wind was blowing the tall weeds and tall aftermaths of wild flowers. Slow driving through the preserve and for a half hour George Bush didn't exist.

We had our first (of the season) back deck bar b q last night. Ah chicken. Good thing there were no chickens at the Preserve.

--------
Murder at 1600 -- is an OK whodunit about a young beautiful woman who is murdered at the White House. The film has noir touches and a nice pace but the chief suspect keeps changing and the switches are way too abrupt. When Clinton was President White House murder films became a genre. Why? In real life nobody was ever murdered at the White House. Now Bush is in the Oval Office (sometimes) and supposedly liberal Hollywood hasn't made a single flick where the President or some member of his family is a murder suspect. Could it be that anyone who gets away with stealing an election and lying us into war is just too frightening to mess with?

Drag On This

A disconnected friend
who makes a living
selling connections
fell out of a burning sky
on my shoulders
begging for a piggy back ride
up the magic mountain
but
I pointed to a path
proclaiming
Puff doesn't live here any more,
she shed a tear
and
asked me how I was feeling.

Day In The Life -- Judy and I took our yuppie walking sticks in hand and ascended the mountain path up Multnomah Falls. It was quite a hike on a hot day. It took us four hours to go up and down. That time includes rests and a mini picnic in a beautiful glen at the top. There were a billion tourists present but their numbers thinned as we came nearer to the top. It's an odd hike because the most spectacular sites are nearer to the beginning than the end. But when you hit the top, there is a sense of accomplishment and relief. Judy took a ton of photos and today, I'll do some computer work on them. We returned home with tight sore muscles and crashed. We stayed that way for at least an hour.

Bush went biking with Lance Armstrong. I guess this is what he means by getting on with his life. I'm sure he hasn't noticed that the corpse rate for Americans fighting in the Afghan war is dramatically on the rise. Next thing you know a mother of that conflict will be living next door to his vacation.
