Double Standard

A crazed Israeli soldier
murdering Arabs on a bus
was buried deeply and insignificantly
in the pages of the Daily Oregonian,
a suicidal Palestinian gunmen
would be meeting his fate
in the morning headlines.
The Israeli angel of death
isn't even described as a terrorist.
Why do they always belittle
Jewish achievement?

Day In The Life -- Back in 1970 Judy helped edit a book on the Chicago Conspiracy Trial, it was based on the official court record of the trial, and titled The Conspiracy Trial. A modern day publisher wants to reissue the book in greatly abbreviated form. Oh how our past becomes our present. Tomorrow we leave for a journey that will take us to New York City where I will be interviewed for a film documentary on John Lennon and his politics. The ghosts of Yippie past live on.

If I get frisked on a New York subway and the police claim I was carrying pot, please be notified in advance, that it was only a plant.

Children's Hour

Rummy took away
the kid's war toys
which were making
a bad impression on the neighbors,
telling Dubya
now it's just a global struggle
against extreme anything.

Georgie had a public fit
"I am too a wartime President"
and
he waved a toy missile at cringing reporters.

In another neighborhood,
paralyzed legless veterans
deposited in the shadows
of forgotten humans
had trouble remembering their own names
much less
the approved definitions
of death and despair.
----
Day In The Life -- I started reading the new Harry Potter book. It's compelling from the start. We went to R's birthday party. He finished the Hep C chemo treatment a few months ago and it was gratifying to see him looking good, with much energy and spirit. B who went through it all with him also looked happy and great.

The corpses keep piling up in Iraq. The insurgents are learning to fight and kill with more efficiency and their weapons are growing more powerful. Bush's response is to take an extended vacation in Texas and engage in a public feud with his own administration over whether he is a war President or a struggle President. What about an ex-President?
------
Dopamine -- A Sundance film that's about nerds in love. But what is love? Is it only a chemical reaction? Can it be accurately reproduced in a computer program about a pet bird who responds lovingly to spoken emotional statements? Is their no difference between techno simulation and the real thing? The film shot in beautiful, erotic San Francisco and its surroundings is wordy and slow but it does catch the childlike and childish qualities of people who play with computers and with life.

Scientific Method

Bush believes intelligent design
desrves equal consideration
with Darwin's great vision,
but he never shows any intelligence.

Iraqi War corpses piling high
as Hells Bells
ring in triumph of Dr Doom
but Bush goes off for a month
of posing cowboy tough
in Texas.
During a previous long vacation
planes crashed into 9/11.

Is Dubya
Natural Selection's cruel answer
to human progress
or did some designing bastard
think him up?

-------
Day In The Life -- LZ is back in Kansas. Tonight we go to a birthday party for a guy who went through the Hep C treatment. He did some great bloging about it. Happy Birthday R. and much good health to you.

Speaking of my old enemy Hep C. the Roche Big Pharma drug company put an ad in the NY Times the other day, boosting the current treatment for Hep C. It was a rather compelling ad and welcome for calling attention to the illness but by not mentioning Roche or the name of drugs used in the treatment, (referred to only as prescription drugs) and by posing as a humble public service group, Big Pharma gets around the law and doesn't have to describe the drug's terrible side effects. My year in Hell is missing.

Last Night -- You know the world is coming to an end at midnight (never mind why) and you are living in Toronto, what would you do? Lots of Canadians are out in the streets celebrating like it was New Year's Eve, others are busy fulfilling all their sexual fantasies, some are praying, others looting and at least two are falling in love. This film would be as fine as the 1950s "On The Beach" end of the world epic, if only it had Ava Gardner in the cast. People wonder how almost everyone can be so calm in the flick, what with them all about to die. Well, they are Canadians. How does the world go out, for two Canadians, it ends not with a bang but a kiss and Pete Seeger and The Weavers singing Guantanamera.

High Noon

Big Bad Bolton
two guns a totin',
comes bashing and blasting
into
oneworldfreeloadingunitednationsathiests
he don't need no stinkin' Senate confirmation
for hacking and slicing
big apple fancy foreigners
parking their cars where decent Americans can't.

He's got Bush watching his back
both listening to God's voice
or is it
the faint echo
of a distant sneeze?

---------
Day In The Life - LZ leaves this morning. He's wearing the ruby slippers and heading back for Kansas. Ah, there is no place like home. We ate on the deck last night but the appearance of a yellow jacket indicates, we will soon have to discontinue he practice till late September.
--
Bush's popularity is at an all time low but notice the polls show the Democrats aren't developing any heat. Big surprise, without leadership, program, a vision and their taking money from the same corrupt sources as the Republicans, why should they be taken seriously?
--------
TV's Monk was likable last night. As usual, he solved the crime but with a sad outcome for him and his nurse-assistant. His phobias and her fears did harm to both of them.

Rebranding

Rearranging faces
giving them all another name
Bush now says
he no longer wages war against terror
but struggles
against global extremism
cause "war" and "terror"
are ugly words, jangling nerves
where people vote.

The war time President
mutating into struggle time leader.
His campaign biography
being reissued
as
"My Struggle,"
it's about global stuff.

Day In The Life -- Now it's LZ's turn for a visit. Old friends reassure us that time leaves some things alone -- like certain old friends and shared memories. We all had a backyard brunch over at E and M's, and engaged in some interesting and intellectually stimulating conversation about right wing power and the weakness of the American left. Much later LZ and us, went out to our favorite Chinese Restaurant.

Is Bush a true believer or just a corrupt crony capitalist using ideologies to achieve power but not willing to stand by anything? Some liberal pundits are debating this question but the answer does not lie in logic but history. We shall see.

Reunions

Places in the heart
showing up for dinner time
of shared souls
of memory and pain
of laughter and love.

Always picking up
at left off spaces,
some things that time
cannot strip away.

Day In The Life -- E. S. and J.J. passing through town spent the night. They are our best of friends from times past and present. We had lots of catching up -- getting the Weather Report and other greetings. It's like ex-Panther Big Man told me the other night -- at least we are alive. And we are more than that -- underneath it all, we still have hope.

We are going to a brunch for LZ who is here for a presentation he is giving at Reed. His talk was last night and he will hang out with us today. Another in gathering of the tribes.
