All Aboard

On the Underground
passengers killing time between places,
the doors open
an Asian guy
fear burning his eyes out
stumbles in
while pursuing cops throw him down
to the subway's floor
and
automatically shoot him to death,
a public execution
carried out
at Prime Minister Poodles order
at killing times between places.
-------
Day In The Life - Judy and I were cementing the bricks on our front stoop (a Brooklyn phrase), I mixed the stuff and she put it down. When I was a kid, all the sidewalk cementing was done by old Italians. They spoke their native language loud and fast and as a 12 year old, I thought they were only talking about sex.
--------
Brit cops seem to be interpreting their shoot to kill terrorists order as a directive to kill captured prisoners, which is what happened yesterday on a London subway. How come they don't emulate George Bush who likes to keep his prisoners around because torturing them is so much fun? Some folks like to call all this a war of civilizations. But how can this be so, if all participants act like barbarians?
----
Seed Of Chucky -- Chucky is the world's most famous killer doll. "Chucky, why do you kill?" His reply. "Because it relaxes me." And also, "Killing isn't an addiction, it's a choice." He has a wife killer doll named Tiffany, who goes on a 12 point program to stop killing but quickly falls off the wagon. And then there is their seed offspring Glen or Glenda? who pisses in its pants and seems to be a pacifist. We also have a slightly overweight movie star, Jennifer Tilly, playing herself as a slightly overweight movie star. She's just right for the part. OK, so its not exactly Citizen Kane or Casablanca but it's very funny.

Boyz In The Band

Standing in the crowd
the big parade going by
everyone's getting bored and restless
it started out all exciting
with dramatic speeches and great giant guns
but the jugglers of truth
kept dropping their lies
and
the precision marching band
was stepping on each others toes
and
now the police aren't letting anyone leave
cause officials say
privacy isn't in the Constitution
but crowd control was a concern
of their founding fathers.

---
Day In The Life -- We got our giant wooden bed fixed, it's old by now and creaking. A friend built it for us in the early 80's. He subsequently went on to have a reasonably successful career as an NPR announcer and creator of human interest features. The repairs were tested last night when I got out of bed at 4 in the morning and Judy slept on undisturbed.

That silly attempt at a second bombing of London's
Underground subway system reminds me of Marx's quip about "history repeating itself, once as tragedy and twice as farce." But today, the London police did shoot down and kill an Asian guy today at a subway station (the Muslim Association is demanding an explanation) and NYC is beginning a "random" subway search of any swarthy (Well, do you think they're going to tie up the "rush hour" searching blonde Scandinavians?) character who makes a New York cop paranoid. I'll be in NYC in August. I'll let you know if I'm searched.

We saw the final thirty minutes of the Potter "Prisoner" flick (see yesterday's blog) and it has one of the best time travel sequences, I've ever seen in a movie.

The Choice

Even some middle of the road
pundits of power
think it's OK
to be putting a fascist
on the Supreme Court
as long as
he's a brilliant, handsome, amiable
sort of fascist.

It's only the curmudgeons
who offend good taste.

----------
Redux

Creepy chills in the lower gut
exploding again
on a London bus and subway.

Terror proclaiming
"Good morning Brits"

Bush's poodle barking loud
but he's no guard dog.

Day In The Life -- I sent this letter to the Oregonian. Will they use it? I am a believer in writing letters to the editor. It give you a chance to get your thoughts into unusual places. When I first moved to Portland, the Oregonian published my stuff regularly and even invited me to write a few op-ed pieces, but the world has changed a lot since those days.
-----
"To The Editor:

I just successfully completed the harsh year long treatment for Hepatitis C, and I'm disturbed by Governor Kulongoski's veto of a bill that would stop the state from limiting the types of drugs used in the treatment of this disease for those enrolled in the Oregon Health Plan. Kulongoski is concerned about saving the state money, by obtaining the lowest cost medications. But only two drugs are licensed by the Federal government for treatment of this illness. They are Interferon and Ribavirin and Ribaviran must be used in conjunction with Interferon. Using Interferon alone is an outmoded treatment that has a significantly lower cure rate.

Hepatitis C is a killer illness. Currently ten thousand people a year die from it in this country and it is the leading cause of liver transplants. If Governor Kulongoski reverts to a less successful treatment on the Oregon Health Plan more patients will die. This isn't his intention but it will happen."
---
I heard from my friend who was off to Cuba without a passport. She decided this wasn't a working plan, so instead of that, she received training in fighting wild fires and now she waits patiently for a fire. Burn Baby Burn and pass the hot sauce.
------
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban -- We are in a Harry Potter mood here with Judy and Jessica (in SF) reading Half- Blood Prince. So it was time to watch this best of all the Potter movies. It really catches the dark frightening side of Witch and Wizard World. On this watching, I couldn't help but pick up the Brit Beatles influence on Potter. It felt like his world was created by their Magical Mystery Tour and that with Harry's triumph Lucy is once again flying in the Sky With Diamonds or at least a broom. And isn't Harry looking a bit like John Lennon? I also discovered the best possible way of describing Hepatitis C chemotherapy. It's feels like being tormented by the Dementors forever.

Courting Disaster

Slipping a spy into the Brethren's court,
don't leave paper trails
on the forest green
keep him young
so he may dwell there forever
and
let him seem
all
aw shucks and modest

sort of Jimmy Stewart
laying waste to the environment
and abortion rights.

--------
Day In The Life -- We went to a well attended thirtyish Planned Parenthood pizza party last night. It was in the Pearl District, outdoors on a balcony and under a very hot sun. The heat was appropriate considering that, at that very moment Bush was nominating someone to the Supreme Court, who as a lawyer once maintained that legalizing abortion was a very big mistake.
----
Naturally, as the Bushies planned it, the Roberts nomination knocked the Rove Affair off of the front pages. Did you notice the various fake outs? First the Bushies leaked that the nominee might be a Latino and yesterday word on the street was, that it would be a woman. The Rovers clearly are masters of misdirection.
---
Put this under the capitalism turns everything into a product category. Fredricka Newton (Huey's widow) and David Hilliard (the Panther's former Chief of Staff) filed an application with the U. S. Patent and Trademark Office last year to secure the phrase "Burn Baby Burn" for commercial trademark purposes. They are putting out a fiery hot sauce that will bare that name. Newton and Hilliard also plan to put out a 60s nostalgia clothing line.

----------
Sommersby -- Jack Sommersby returns to his former plantation after serving in the Confederate Army. He is a changed man, the former wife beating boozer is now loving tender and kindly. And he's also a good neighbor who develops a land sharing plan that will develop the economy of his war damaged community. A plan that will help whites and Blacks, a plan that gets him into direct conflict with the KKK. Yes, Sommersby is now a good husband, father and citizen but is he really Sommersby? The first warning sign is that his dog doesn't recognize him and then his foot is too small at the shoe makers. But matters really get out of hand when he is accused of committing a murder, a killing that the real Sommerby actually carried out. Will "Sommersby" hang for a murder that another man committed. This all makes for a very exciting trial and an interesting movie. I think the story is based on something that really happened it Europe during the middle ages and that once inspired the making of a French film. Richard Gere is his usual irresistible self as Sommersby and James Earl Jones makes an OK Black Reconstruction era Mississippi judge.

Mandate

Americans growing disillusioned
with getting Bush job
brain wash

are placing adds in special journals
of know it all and everything,
begging for new controllers
of clueless minds
to take charge
and show them a good time.

In China
when disillusionment creeps in
thw people attack heaven
demanding a new mandate
by rioting massively
and
talking to reporters
from the NY Times.

Day In The Life -- Dom came by with new Harry Potter book. Judy read the first sentence out loud. A nasty implied reference to George Bush. I'll save Harry for the days when I'm in sweltering Chicago and Judy is going to meetings.
----
Bush changed his "fire the evil doers" policy. Formally saying that anyone who was involved in outing Ms. Wilson the CIA agent would be fired. Now when his ventriloquist Rove is proven to be the outer he raises the bar and declares that anyone who committed a crime will be fired. Do you feel relieved that Bush will not have known criminals in his administration? Please take notice that the press is not calling Dubya a flip-flopper. It's just like the media isn't call the abortion clinic murderer, Atlanta Olympics bomber Eric Rudolph a terrorist. That title is reserved for Muslims. No Christians allowed.

Awake

Sadness paints a sordid world
of bought and paid for souls,
they never abolished slavery,
they just changed its name

but rebellious minds
are looking with fire
at Hell's unsavory source
and
movements rise up
to reclaim hope,
picking fragments of light
from a long night's journey.

People slowly waking up
discovering
our nightmare
isn't a dream.
-----
Day In The Life -- We went to a Planned Parenthood picnic and Judy assumed her "Madame Gumbo" Tarot card reading persona and spent at least four hours reading the cards for those who made a modest financial contribution to the cause. Judy has been reading the cards since the late 60's and she gives everyone an honest shuffle.

We went to L and B's last night for a spontaneous bar b que. The place is overflowing with early twentyish young men (their sons with their friends) and so we dined on chicken spiced with lots of testostorone.
--
The Bushies are trying to redefine the Rove affair in the same way that they redefined the invasion of Iraq. Iraq went from being a war against weapons of mass destruction to a war for democracy. The Rove scandal is supposed to change from one where he is a proven liar and character assassin, to one where he was just trying to help a reporter write an honest story. If the Bushies pull this off, let's all admit that reality is an old fashioned concept that cannot survive a post modern Republican.
--
The Discovery Channel did a feature on the wonders of the American west. They rated the top ten. The Grand Canyon predictably won and Bryce Canyon did not even make the list. Nonsense. Bryce is a surreal dreamscape erosion masterpiece completely unappreciated by the official critics.

Simple Simon Sez

If Bush said
Jews were naturally greedy,
serious articles would begin appearing
discussing
greed in Jewish culture
and "honest people"
would start disagreeing over the issue.

Same about Blacks and crime

Same about Latinos and laziness.

But Bush will never say that.

If Bush said
bombing the shit out of a Muslim country
would protect America
against terrorist attack
serious articles would begin appearing
discussing masochism in Muslim culture
and "honest people"
would start disagreeing over the issue.

Oh right,
he did say that
and
they do disagree.

------
Day In The Life -- CounterPunch, an online militantly and eccentrically left publication, which I write for, has been hack attacked for two weeks running. And they have lost several valuable days of publication. The attack may originate in Europe. If thugs came into the office of a dissident journal and smashed it up we would all call it fascism. But when it happens online and involves nerds, we unfortunately tend to make light of it and think of the assault as a video game.
-----
Twelfth Night - Shakespearean comedy splendidly brought to the screen by the BBC. There is the usual gender bending bit along with the predictable separated twins number and there is lots of frustrated but ultimately fulfilled romantic love. The BBC version is plausibly set in the 19th century. As usual with Shakespeare's comedies, the glory is not in the plot but in the lines spoken. This play has the immortal and frequently quoted "fame thrust upon them" reference. F. Murray Abraham is excellent as the singing wise fool.
