Rocky

Magnificence always
beckons
from the rocks of ages
shaped like coral dreams
of memory and joyous play,
declaring despair
a small trap
set by mini-minds
that never visited Bryce Canyon.

----
Day In The Life-- I made a wild Haitian chicken last night. It's a stew with carrots, cauliflower and broccili thrown in as well as the usual wierd mix of spices and stock. It's fun to make and great to eat. The warm sun finally came back to Portland. The great untold story of this city (almost never mentioned in the Oregonian) is how people go nuts after two months of chill and cloudiness. The first lesson Judy and I learned when we moved here was get it while you can. Never spend a sunny day indoors.
---

The Assassination of Richard Nixon -- A kind of death of a salesman set in Nixon's 1970s. Sean Penn is perfect as a guy disintegrating with the failure of his American dreams and also having some post-60's sensibility as to its larger social and political causes. Unexpectedly, a moment along the doomed salesmen's journey takes place in the office of the Black Panther Party where Penn's character expresses his alienation and despair by suggesting that the organization change its name to the Zebra Party. "See it has black and white stripes. Your membership will double."
-------------------------
What was the bigger sin? That Bush and Rove lied us into a brutal endless purposeless war or that Rove identified a CIA agent in order to discourage someone who told the truth about the war? Ah yes, you are right. It is the same sin.

--- Hi R----

--------------------------------

Naked News

Stripping away
tea ceremony politeness
of bourgeois hypocrisy,
Rove-ian Republican storm troopers
on talking radio
declare
they are the law
and the god
of absolute power
but Fallujah gunman
born of rubble and death
worship at a different slaughter house
of divine carnage.

-----
Day In The Life -- We went to a Planned Parenthood International event on behalf of reproductive rights. Visiting Peruvians were its honored guests. The well attended fiesta took place at the Onda Gallery, and the food and music were great. I got an e-mail from a very interesting individual who wasn't sure that I am really me. I hope this blog straightens everything out.
-----

The press should find out who told Rove that Ms Wilson worked for the CIA. Rove told the media but how did he know? Did someone at the Agency tip him off? Some other figure in the Bush administration? Bush?
-------

Space Jam-- Bugs Bunny and the Looney Tunes gang, team up with Michael Jordan to defeat obstreperous aliens in an intergalactic basket ball game. If Bugs was your first childhood hero, you will enjoy the animation. Bill Murray plays himself and I'm sure he agreed to this role just for the privilege of hanging out with Jordan.

Dangerous Words

The professor lectured them
over dinner
about Muslims standing up for Muslims
by fighting against aggressors everywhere.

He just got sentenced to life in prison
in Virginia
cause his speech was considered terroristic
by the Patriot Actors and their obedient jury.
Even the Judge
called the sentence too severe.

Back when the US was bombing Hanoi
I said things that were much more explosive:
bring the war home!
off the pig!
if the government won't stop the war
we'll stop the government!
cause I wasn't a polite professor
and
I practiced my preaching.

But in those days
America had a phrase for wild talk
and incendiary rants,
we called it
Free Speech.

---------
Day In The Life -- Yesterday I wrote about rereading my Hep C chemo blogs and wondering how I found the will to finish since my experience was so harsh. H. sent me an e-mail recalling that when he originally read the blogs, he reflected on my difficult experiences thinking: "I really don't think I could do it." I suppose you really never know until they offer you the needle. We went grocery shopping yesterday taking full advantage of New Seasons Wednesday 10% off for geezers discount. In a few weeks we are going to have a coincidental invasion of old friends, all on different nights with nobody meeting anybody else. Panthers, Weathermen, and a lawyer. Come one come all. But not you retired FBI agents. You can have your own reunions.
---
Mafia. A super silly (in the style of Airplane) take off on the Godfather. Many of its most famous scenes are satirized and sometimes the action actually gets funny. My favorite moments are in the Vegas casino where the point is made with maximum hilarity that the house always wins. One line says the smart losers "just send in their money and skip the expense of coming here." And you see the dollar stuffed envelopes pouring in.

Rove-ing

Media still shills Bush
as boyish and innocent,
he doesn't sit on a throne of greed and blood
at the gates of hell
but he's kinda Huck Finn going down the river
with Rove, the scampish rogue
and
Huck knows the bible sez his pal done wrong
but dagnabit
Finn'll go to Hades before he betrays a friend.

Oh Shucks,
isn't it time
for Dubya
to get on his bicycle
and
put another policeman
in the hospital?

------
Day In The Life -- Editing my Hep C blogs, is like a boxer reading about his old fights and concentrating on the brutal rounds that he lost. Judy showed me two poems that I wrote on her birthdays. Both had references to me crawling, the sense that I barely made it over the finish line. Rereading the blogs I wonder how I found the will to finish at all. But finish I did and win I did. So the story has a happy ending but the harsh memories remain. I read that they are experimenting with much shorter periods of Hep C chemo treatments in Europe and coming up with the same cure rate. Will the final blow be that Med science will decide I suffered twice as long as necessary?
--
Bush sounded phony the other week when he made that silly sounding statement about how he was upset about the attacks against Torture Chamber Gonzales because he cares so much about his friends. The media talked about how Dubya was loyal to his pals. But maybe Gonzales was a code word for Rove?
---------

White Man's Burden -- Imagine an America where the Blacks are the ruling class and whites live in the ghettos and are victims of poverty, crime and police brutality. The makers of this film present such a world in a very persuasive way. John Travolta plays a white guy who works (appropriately) in a chocolate candy factory owned by a rich Black played by Harry Belafonte. Through a series of misunderstandings Travolta is fired and he stumbles into kidnapping Belafonte. Having made no plans about how to deal with his hostage the white man is headed for total destruction. Travolta does a great job of portraying his character's humanity and victimization but also his overblown macho pride and foolishness.Unfortunately Belafonte is a bit stiff and doesn't offer a very interesting response to his kidnapper.

Last Year's Man

Remember
(it was a week ago)
when Karl Rove
was a political genus?

Not a shlemiel
trapped
in your morning headlights.

And how's Dubya
gonna strut and look self righteous
at that
inevitable press conference
from Hell?

-------------

Day In The Life -- We ran into L & B at Trader Joe's. They are just back from Spain and Italy and a fantastic vacation. The kind you wish was still going on. I know that feeling.

Do you think Karl Rove didn't know he was breaking the law when he revealed the identity of an under cover CIA agent? Or had he grown so arrogant that the law didn't matter? Or is he a shape shifting alien reptile in the process of conquering the planet Earth?
------------
The Daily Show came roaring back last night. Their Senior Correspondent in London claiming that the recent subway bombings proved Bush's policies were working because London isn't in the United States.

No Exit

Stumbling down a dangerous alley
no need to be there
it doesn't offer a promised shortcut
and it's all muggers all the time.

But pride won't let him leave
cause someone is whispering
no street will be safe
if you leave this one
and
you can learn self defense.

He stumbles on
into a battered darkness
and
the muggers keep whispering.
---------------

Day In The Life -- We went to the Movies, the theater is called The Roseway. It's on Sandy Blvd. and it has an oil painting by Victor Lee of FDR and Eleanor hanging on its wall. The painting looks down on an old fashioned radio which recalls Roosevelt's fireside chats. Judy and I pay homage to it everytime we go to the Roseway. I don't know how the theater came by the oil painting except that somehow, it got it from the White House. Why did they hang it? Roseway and Roosevelt? Who knows?

A staff party of Planned Parenthood played host to visiting Peruvians who are family planning activists in their own country. We were there and the food was excellent.

Judy and I re-cemented some bricks on our front steps and we did a good job. Maybe its a new career?

--------
The Fantastic Four -- If you are a Fantastic Four fan, you ought to have a lot of fun with this movie. The portrayals of the four superheros and their arch enemy, the ultra wealthy Doctor Victor Von Doom are right on target. Michael Chiklis (of TV's The Shield) is especially fantastic as Ben Grimm - The Thing. The special effects are convincing but they do not overwhelm character development. Back in the 60s a lot of us (especially when stoned) identified with the Four. Like us, they worked out of a collective, fought amongst themselves, and always united when attacked by outsiders. And we and The Fantastic Four battled bravely against Dr. Doom, otherwise known as global capitalism.

Questions For A Bloody Sunday

Barbarians are our fate
at global Starbucks,
sipping coffee, planing takeovers
destroying futures and pasts.

Greece once civilized Rome.

Is there some culture hiding in the closet
that can teach brutes
the value of a good sentence
or a sunrise?

Athens once taught Sparta philosophy.
What can we teach George Bush?

------

Day In The Life -- We did a lot of ordinary stuff. I got a pair of new glasses, Judy went shopping for her T - Shirts, we had a bowl of Vietnamese-Chinese wanton rice noodle soup. Today we have to cement down some bricks on our front step. There is a Planned Parenthood party tonight. In late July we will be invaded by old friends. An old time Black Panther named Big Man wrote (I just read it) that the whole of America is on the verge of being treated, like the government once treated the Panthers.

--------
House Of Flying Daggers -- An amazing film, of great beauty. The cinematography is fantastic, great bamboo forests, snow storms, leaves coloring in autumn, and to get things right they even shot some scenes in a Ukraine national park. The music is incredible, the acting offers passion, romance and tragedy, the fighting is an ongoing and magnificent combination of dance and death. As for the plot, the Flying Daggers are revolutionaries who rob from the rich and give to the poor, and naturally the government (the Tang Dynasty in decline) army wants to destroy them. The intelligence forces concoct a scheme, they have a handsome soldier break a beautiful Flying Dagger warrior out of prison in hopes that she will lead him to the Daggers hideout. But other forces are also concocting elaborate schemes and nothing is as it seems. The film offers plot surprises up to its very conclusion. Daggers also contains a certain feminist slant, the escaped women warrior is in every way, the absolute equal (if not superior) to the fiercest of men. And the Flying Daggers organization is under the leadership of women. Although the film reveals some Hollywood and Soviet cinematic influence only the Chinese have a culture so powerful and extensive that would permit them to make a film like this.
