Blindness

American napalm burning Iraqi flesh.
Whole Afghan villages blown away.

And
perpetrators
are never called barbarians
by Joseph Conrad reading NY Times editors
who can't see their mirror image
in the heart of darkness.

--------
Day In The Life -- Judy and I went to a Jewish progressive political activists potluck last night. The food was fine and we brought a great salad, but there was hardly any politics discussed. Are people feeling helpless? Our trip to NYC is shaping up. The fellow who is interviewing me for his documentary on John Lennon will be putting us up and a fine mid town hotel. And of course this means discount tickets to a Broadway show and a visit to a comedy club. Maybe we'll build up the will power to visit Ground Zero.
---
We watched the conclusion of Ladyhawk. I won't give away endings but it does seem that nobody cries over a dead tyrant. Or does very much about it.

Sometimes You Don't Count The Dead

Still picking bodies out of tunnels
of deeply buried hatreds
Brits urged the stiff lip
like Americans told to consume,
national traits coming out in crisis.

Pundits talk about sickness
of Jihad spreading and recruiting
in western based Muslim communities
just like Hitler called Jews,
disease spreading vermin.
"Muslims better clean up their act
or we'll do it for them."

Nobody counting the Iraqi dead
machine gunned at check points
obliterated by bombs
cause they died for democracy
in a holy crusade
for free markets, Christ and reelecting Republicans.

--
Day In The Life -- Dom came over and we talked about politics, reptiles and movies. That was fun. He gave me a copy of ex-Panther "Big Man's"
new book. A friend called and said she was leaving for Cuba tomorrow. I asked her if she had a passport. She didn't. And she hadn't even thought about it. She'll try to pick one up while on the road to Havana. Good luck. "Passports? We don't need no stinken' passports. Soy Anarquista!"

----
Ladyhawk -- It's a tragic neo Shakespearean tale about a medieval black magic Bishop who casts a spell on two lovers. She must be a hawk by day and he a wolf by night. They can never "know" each other. A puckish thief (played by Matthew Broderick) who escaped from the evil bishop's dungeon (he's the only one who ever did) tries to help them beat the curse. The camera adds to the film's appeal, by focusing on decaying castles and a brooding but erotic countryside. And there's lots of good swordplay.

London

Hitchcockian terror strikes
London bus and trains
corpses being counted,
a hundred years of imperial history
summed up in a deadly blast
as martial law politician-police decide
how to cash in democracies chips,
as it gives up the game.

Baghdad is not alone now.
Another city smolders in nightmare.

-----------------------

Day In The Life--- I woke to the London bombings. The war nightmare continuing. Blood taken for blood. Barbarians chewing on each others flesh (Shaun Of The Dead) as militarists take over politics and fascists serve on supreme courts. As for London look for old World War 2 blitz nostalgia to be used as cover for the zombie renaissance.

I have learned that I can work on my chemo book, if I think of myself as a literary character. This approach wards off (to a degree) traumatic memories.

In The Grass

Silent snakes slithering
into the Supreme Court,
roguish reptiles
with fascist intentions
of torture and execution
even the privacy of dreams
will be a decision of State
and
so will the bodies of women.

A snake once tempted Eve
with an apple
now he offers her chains.

-----
Day In The Life - I'm reading Lewis Black's "Nothing's Sacred." He's that ranting hilarious curmudgeon on the Daily Show. Actually he's a nice guy who spent his youth in the 60's, politics, acid et al who was strongly influenced by Paul Krassner. His book (an autobiography) is funny, intelligent and well worth your while. Black is friends with the guy who is going to interview me for the John Lennon film and that's how we came by a signed copy.

I'm getting back to my Hep C book which is based on these blogs.
----------

Courting Disaster -- Bush is trying to get his right wing base to use mellower language re-the Supreme Court nomination and to ease up on his pal Alberto Gonzales. Alberto could be a dangerous stealth candidate, a guy with almost no paper trail on abortion and other "social" issues. We do know he likes torture and executions. If the organized right wing forces him to give away his real views, well where's the stealth in that?

After The Ball

People fill voided places
with superficial lines
at parties
and other places of conversation.

Like going to a gas station
when running on empty spirit.
--------

Day In The Life -- Jessica went back to San Francisco. She called us from a hill top while watching fireworks. Judy and I just got back from a neighborhood walk. It was bright and sunny but with a cooling morning breeze. Excellent walking weather.
--------
Courting Disaster -- Is Bush throwing out misdirections by sending Alberto Gonzalez to Iraq and giving the impression that Alberto is being built up as a candidate for the Supreme Court? Could the Bush/Rove be pretending they will nominate a semi moderate on legal abortion as a confusing cover for putting in a maximum extremist? Who knows? Stay tuned.

--------

Soldier -- Released only to video this futuristic thriller has some excellent moments. Kurt Russell plays a discarded super soldier who was raised from childhood to kill on command. He is dumped on a garbage disposal planet when a genetically manipulated rival proves to be a bit tougher. Quite by accident, there is a likable community ensconced on the planet because their space ship crash landed. They take Russell he and he begins to humanize himself by watching the non warriors be nice to each other and actually have some fun. Alas, the folks who got rid of him return to the planet with the idea of killing everything that moves. And the former super soldier comes to the defense of his new community. Russell is good in this one, he doesn't talk much but his facial expressions speak much about pain, regret and anger. The film's problem is that it doesn't have much of a middle. The soldier's transformation, developing values not based on obeying orders happens too quickly and deprives the film of its great potential.

Born On The 4th Of July

Fireworks exploding
over a festive night time sky
celebrating a nation conceived by revolution
but the rockets red glare
were all made in China.

Our throne of blood and freedom
now filled by theocrats
who honor autonomy
by bashing the world into obedience
chomping freedom fries
and
maintaining indecent attitudes
toward mankind's opinion.

July 4th
comes again
every year baring witness
to our memory and tragedy.

----------
Day In The Life -- We went to the movies and then introduced Jessica to Wong's King, Portland's great new Chinese Restaurant. The food (especially the lamb dish) was fantastic and the scene was wild with several noisy birthday parties and lots of kids running around. Much great food and energy. Jessica leaves today. All her visits are too short.

----
War Of The Worlds. H. G. Wells sci fi masterpiece is back on the screen directed by Spielberg and staring Tom Cruise. As weird aliens in tripodic weapons of mass destruction attempt to annihilate the Earth's population, and drink its blood, Cruise playing a divorced New York guy with major family problems tries to get his two kids to Boston and their mother, hoping against the all odds that Boston still exists. The scenes of mass destruction, blood letting, corpses floating in the river and mob psychology are unparalleled. This very scary film version, so influenced by the original Night Of The Living Dead will become a horror classic. As usual the ending is too abrupt and anticlimactic. But that's the way Wells wrote it.

Slippery Slope

Americans showing forced solidarity with the poor
by having
a declining
standard of living.

Dubya sez
maybe humans aren't responsible
for global warming
could be part of god's plan.

Islamic bombs exploding
from Kosovo, Egypt, Russia, and always Iraq.
America building more torture chambers.
War of Civilizations
being fought by barbarians.

Yesterday I went hiking on a narrow rocky trail,
so slippery
and
much mud.
Going down the slope
I heard the world
breathing on my shoulder.

-----
Day In The Life - We took a rugged uphill hike at Wildwood. Our Yuppie walking sticks were a big help. Why do young slender hikers walk so fast? I know it's good exercise but they have no time to appreciate weird tree stumps and moss. Jessica finally seems convinced that I have fully regained
my health.
________
More on The Court -- The right wing fanatics must have read yesterday's blog where I mapped out my plan for getting a compromise moderate nominated to the Supreme Court. They immediately announced an all out assault on Alberto Gonzalez. It seems we have reached an historical point where an advocate of torture is considered too moderate for the Court.

----
Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement. Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews are back. Only Hollywood and 12 year old girls still love monarchy and believe every preadolescent female can grow up and live in a palace and have prince charming bowing at her feet. This time around they even throw in a bit of feminism, about how you should be able to be a Queen, even if you don't have a husband. After all, Liz 1 did that and she even got to chop off heads.
