Brotherhood

In what scum sucking gene pool
did the Bush boys do the dog paddle?

George's neurologicaly challenged expression
suggest his career path
would have been serial killing
only he lacked sufficient concentration.

And Jeb's soul is uglier
than a mutilated corpse,
he's a dumb vampire sticking his teeth
into Michael Schiavo
under a high noon sun

and
with everybody watching from the shade,
Count Jebula will burn in Hell.

-----
Day In The Life -- I got another request for a film interview. With documentaries in fashion, this is my second request for the summer. The first one will bring Judy and me to NYC and the second will be done in Portland. It's amazing that after all these years some people still want to know what I know.

----
Sideways -- I put off seeing this movie because I'm not crazy about self intoxicated Yuppies getting drunk on a wine tasting tour and fucking over women. People said, it was very funny, had great references to wine and really caught the spirit of contemporary California. After seeing the film, I don't like the guys very much, although at times the actor does show some boyish charm and the would-be novelist does reveal traces of authentic soul. Two strong and very likably attractive women are part of the week in wine land and yes, some of the wine talk is quite poetic. It's a good but not great film.

The Wild One

Bush base is contracting fast
now being supported by the deranged and cynical.
he keeps repeating idiot phrases
that are going below moronic standards
saving social security and Iraq
with rip off and torture

but he's so unPresidential
seems more like a cracked up motorcycle gang
trying to terrify a ghost town
and
not believing spies
who tipped them off
that all its citizens were dead.

----------
Day In The Life -- I just finished reading "Lost From The Ottawa -- The Story Of The Journey Back, a memoir authored by my old Ann Arbor White Panther Party pal, Pun Plamondon. Pun was a founder (along with John Sinclair and others) of the White Panther Party, an organization which for several years led the dope, rock n roll an fucking in the streets movement in the mid west. They were Black Panther admiring Yippies with Maoist political organization and style. Pun's personal story is amazing. He was born Native American but he didn't know it because his parents died shortly after his birth and he was adopted. He only found out about his origins much later from reading a police report. After the White Panthers and the 60s collapsed Pun became a very dangerous alcoholic and drug abuser. He probably would have wound up dead or in prison if he hadn't discovered the practical meaning of his Indian roots, he was saved by his life force will power, and returning to his original Tribe. Read the book, Pun's writing about police and FBI political repression in Detroit and Ann Arbor during the 60's is alone worth the price of admission. Order it online from www.TRAFFORD.com.
------

We saw Barbarian Invasions -- It's an amazing French-Canadian film about almost everything important. A college professor lies dying of cancer amidst a bureaucratic monstrosity known as the Canadian healthcare system. He is a lusty free loving socialist of the 60's who has only been partially disillusioned from his ideals and sexual behavior. He has a millionaire capitalist son from whom he is quite alienated. ("Why couldn't he have read just one book in his whole life?) But the cold and calculating son is able to wheel and deal the medical system (yes, they also accept bribes in Canada.) into giving his father much better treatment. There are great scenes in which the proper son scores medical heroin for his father and a rather attractive female junkie becomes an unexpected Guardian Angel to the dying man. The film concludes in a river side setting and begins to strongly resemble The Big Chill but with charming French irony and wit. The film has great convincing characters, including a free thinking nun and a police detective who advises on how to score smack. Its message is that all existing systems suck, it is humanity, love and a good sense of humor that will get us through the night.

Day In The Life -- I printed out an 8.5 by 11 fantastic photo that Judy took of Bryce Canyon in Utah. We framed it and hung it up on our bedroom wall as an amazing reminder of just how creative natural erosion can be.

Mt friend Rob wrote in his blog about the cool places that mostly don't exist anymore. He reminded me of those unslick, uncommerical, coffee houses, bookstores, eateries and basement tape record stores of the late 60's, 60's and early 70's. They had a certain soul that created more soul. They are gone with the capitalist wind.

I am reading my friend Pun's memoir. It seems I belong to a secret society of friends who publish their autobiographies. I've read a bunch (and written one), I like this literary output because interesting lives make for interesting books.

Replacement Killers -- A Chinese hitman, in an unnamed American City, is contracted to kill a policeman. The cop had killed the son of a ruling Chinese gangster and Mr. Big naturally wants revenge. But the professional killer can't do the hit, he turns soft hearted because he spotted the cop's wife and kid. Rather than find another killer, Mr. Big turns all his energies on the disobedient hitman. An endless and artistically filmed gun battle ensues, corpses keep piling up, dialog is outrun by death and you can't help thinking that maybe it would have been more humane if the hired assassin had just done his job.

Boot Hill

Friedman figures
we gotta double the American boots in Iraq
cause
we're losing the cheapskate war.

Our antiwar movement ought to be supporting Tom
declaring:
"Withdraw all troops
and
ship in twice as many boots."

Day In The Life -- Judy and I scored a great bar-b-qued chicken at Costco last night. The place wasn't its usual mad house. And it's good to know that Costco has good labor relations that in no way resemble the evil Wal.Mart. My friend Robert Greenwald is making a documentary film on Wal.Mart, Let's hope he makes the monster pay some dues.

Some guy with Hep C got a year in prison for knowingly spitting on a cop. The judge added many months to his sentence because he thought spitting was a way to spread the disease. Odd that even the spitter's lawyer did not object because nobody ever got Hep C via spit and saliva. You can only get it, if your blood mixes with Hep C infected blood. Most people know nothing about the illness, including many who have it. Let's hope that the prisoner gets free chemo while doing his time.

----
A Time To Kill -- In this film, the new south battles with the old. A young black girl is raped by two drunken early 20's racist rednecks. And her father takes justice into his own hands by shooting down and killing his daughter's brutalizers. A white lawyer takes his case and all the hidden but still latently present racism of southern and American history becomes starkly visible. The KKK is reborn and with it, race hatred and terror. Based on John Grisham's novel, the film explores the complexity of racism, even as it's practiced by liberals. A time to kill centers on fast paced courtroom drama and it's very well acted and directed. I did have some problems with the portrayal of the NAACP and a Jewish lawyer. The film uses them as a counter balance to the Klan and in some scenes you might think they were just as bad. There are fine performances from both son and father Sutherland and Sandra Bullock is smart and sexy.

Necessity

Cheney says Gitmo is
required part
of American empire
admitting that Guantanamo's cruelty
is not accident
but imperial necessity.

Cheney complaining that when the US
releases some of its victims,
a few show up on hostile battlefields.

Not a big surprise
cause
if Ghandi went through Gitmo
he might be kicking
a little American ass.

Day In The Life -- Marty Jezer, who I have known off and on since the 60s Yippie days died of cancer. He was 64. Marty was an activist, scholar and journalist. And a life long stutterer. Marty wrote about his situation and brought that disability out of an overly polite closet. Testicular cancer did him in. It's supposed to be one of the most curable. So what went wrong?

A young friend was in town and we introduced her to two visiting ancient friends who we have not seen in 30 years. We all went out to a Cajun restaurant and had a very warm and friendly time.

We Bid You Welcome

Army recruitment falls through the cellar floor.
Bush having a war
and
nobody is showing up.

Standards for service being lowered,
don't ask, don't tell,
but in the name of diversity
vampires, cannibals and serial killers
are accepted for officers training.

Patriot Act gives military
right to recruit in mad houses
General Jack D. Ripper
reporting for duty.

Day In The Life -- Judy and I went to a "meet the new neighbors" party down the block. It's good to live in a neighborhood where people care about being friendly to the new kids on the block.

Dom came over for a late afternoon visit. He told me about a nude bike ride he and a few hundred others took around Portland Saturday night at midnight. Public nudity is not illegal in Oregon provided you don't "touch" yourself. Purpose of the demonstration was mostly to have a good time.

------------

We saw Sin City which brings pulp comic book darkest noir and murderous hilarity to the screen with amazing success. A bunch of very fucked up male super heroes walk the night time streets and swim in its sewers to avenge and protect hookers who wear little or no clothing and carry Uzis. Along the way Sin City paints an unbelievably bleak portrait of power and society. Mickey Rourke and Bruce Willis are amazing as good guy gun slingers.

Power

Political power
used to grow
out of the barrel of a gun
so preached a Chinese poet,

but in the post-modern media empire
of global glitz
all power of state
now grotesquely mutates
from the spinning curve ball
of an endless lie.

Day In The Life -- Judy and I attended the Portland Rose Festival dragon boat races which each year take place on the Willamette River. The boats all have large dragon heads in the front and tails in the back. They are a magnificent sight which (as Leonard Cohen once wrote) come all the way from China. Planned Parenthood's Love Boat team was competing in the women's division and after a hard fought and exciting race the team came in second in a field of four. Well done!

------
We saw The Wild Parrots Of Telegraph Hill -- a documentary by Judy Irving about a flock of wild parrots that flies over Telegraph Hill in San Francisco and Mark Bittner, a once homeless would-be rock musician possessed of left over 60's virtues who befriends them. No one actually knows how the once imported green and red house parrots became a wild bunch or an urban legend but the fact of their existence make for great film material. And so does Mark Bittner's warm and long relationship with them. The key to the bond is that Bittner doesn't try to turn them into his pets, they are wild birds and want to stay that way. (Except for Mingus, of course, but he deserves a movie of his own.) We should think of the parrots as immigrants who in their own way still pursue the now tarnished American Dream of freedom.
