Pissed Off

Urine got on the Koran
by accident,
an American soldier inadvertently pissed
on a Holy Book that we all respect,
so don't go saying American soldiers stuffed it
down a toilet bowl
when our impartial investigations proves
all bowls were filled by Moslem heads
and not their books.

Day In The Life --I got an e-mail and then a phone call from Leo, a guy who I last saw in
1970. He really was one of the founders of the Gay Liberation Movement. He's writing a book on his experiences and wants to interview me. Leo generously says I was an early political influence on him and so was Black Panther Huey Newtion. His book should be very interesting.

Before the Hep C got bad and the chemo got worse I used to really like cooking. With my energies restored and my health quite improved, I'm going back to the find art of food preparation. Last night I made a Cuban style - Viva Fidel roasted chicken which I stuffed with rice, pine nuts, two types of olives, raisins, sausages, and olive oil. Judy agrees--it was fantastic.

Meet The Fockers asks the question,"Can the daughter of a lifetime hard-core Christian CIA agent find happiness with the son of New Age--New Left Jewish parents who live on an island in Florida?" In this sequel flick the all parents finally get together and every predictably weird and funny thing happens. Dustin Hoffman plays the hippie father and Barbara Streisand the mother (she's a sex therapist) , and they milk their parts for every last bit of free wheeling comedy. Of course DeNiro continues to be just fine as the CIA dad. I don't want to give away endings but the good guys win.

Defining George

Bush
says he's catapulting the propaganda
and
capitalism's built on trust
not government regulation.

Bush
says disassemble means lying
when it really means
tearing us apart
by tossing America's dreams
into a bottomless canyon
of flying trolls.

Bush says
he's creating a culture of life
by disassembling with a catapult.

Judy and I got "downtown" haircuts yesterday and I was told that my hair is thickening and my curls coming back. Chemotherapy wasted my hair but since it worked I am willing to pay the price of strange looking hair. But what if I don't have to pay the price? I got an e-mail from someone I have not seen in 35 years, it occasionally happens to me via my website and the amazing Internet. I can't make up my mind if George Bush is going nuts or he's driving me nuts or both. And then of course there is brothers Jeb and his great love of voters in a vegetative state. The Bush's are the Kennedy's, as they might have been portrayed in Mr. Minsky's house of burlesque.

Fairy Tale: A True Story is a likable story about England at the end of World War 1, a country badly in need of cheering up and two very pre-adolescent girls provide the good spirit with true to life photographs of fairies playing in the forest. Investigating the possibility of super natural occurrences, the magician Harry Houdini and the writer Sir Arthur Conan Doyle jump into the fun. The warm hearted film seems to be saying the girls may have somehow faked the photos to revive their own spirits and hopes, then again it seems to be telling us that the fairies may actually be real. Harvey Keitel does a fine job playing Houdini the master illusionist.

Must Get Stoned

Billion year old
Bryce statues standing stolid
in spontaneous stone

supposedly once badly behaving human inhumans
cursed and petrified by Coyote
as frustrating punishment,
updated by the frozen regal presence
of Queen Victoria's arrogance

Bryce has stone thrones
waiting for George and Jeb
to be frozen forever in stupid grins.

Day In The Life -- A fellow in NYC phoned. He is making a film documentary on the government's attempt in the 1970s to deport John Lennon. It was a Nixon idea and his motivations were political. He felt Lennon might help defeat him in the 1972 election. I was friends with John and Yoko during that period and I wrote about it in Who The Hell Is Stew Albert? The guy read my book. I agreed to the interview, because it is an important story worth telling and the guy (although from a younger generation) comes from my old Brooklyn neighborhood. See you in the movies.

We saw Cookie's Fortune, Robert Altman's warm lazy small town vision of new south Mississippi. Cookie, an aging slightly batty woman who deeply misses her late husband, happily kills herself and leaves a suicide note. But her two nieces who discover the body make it look like murder because suicide would be an embarrassment to the family. One of the nieces actually eats the suicide note. And a very amiable well liked black man who lives in the house and who was Cookie's best friend is suspected of the murder. The plot revolves around the ensuing police investigation and the ensemble of daft likable characters that it encounters. The plot isn't that important (although it does reveal the poison of family secrets) it's the characters and their way of life that grab our approving attention. Patricia Neal as Cookie, and Glen Close and Charles S Dutton give great performances.

Watergate Redux

Breaking into homes
of rebels who once smoked a joint
with members of the Weather Underground
was OK patriotic posture
for Mark Felt.

But when it came to Nixon
there was some Dick
even Deep Throat
would not suck.

Day In The Life -- I made my closure phone call to nurse Mary Jane. She was the member of the Hep C Kaiser Clinic who saw me through my 11 months of chemo. It was a very happy reunion because the news was so good - so positive. Mary Jane was happy, like a member of the family, She credited me for holding up through the treatment and always providing her with interesting phone calls. I don't know what it means (except coincidence) but she says lately she has been getting a bunch of good results from the chemo. We both hoped that the form of treatment I endured would someday be consider a transition to a better, more effective and much less harsh type. A kinder, gentler less George Bush cure.

----
The Daily Show is back in town because Jon Stewart has completed his two week vacation. And a good thing too, with Deep Throat's identity finally coming out (Halderman told Nixon, the Irish Mark Felt was a Jew) and Bush saying those who criticize his human rights record in Guantanamo are haters of America, and Muslims burning down Kentucky Fried Chicken in Pakistan, there is plenty of material for brilliant satire.

PSA

Hi Kids:
I'm concerned that there are plenty of you out there
who are sharing your needles when you shoot up.

Your doing smack or steroids
or some other fun drug
and
overly generous soul
that you are
you're passing your needle to others
who are unworthy.

Stop that sharing!
Don't you know it's dangerous?
Don't you know that you might be getting AIDS
or
Hepatitis C from someone elses blood?

For God's Sakes kids, it's 2005
and
George Bush is President
and
everyone knows selfishness is good
and
sharing is so Sixties
so retro.

Back in the "what's mine is yours" Sixties
I shared a needle
and
I got a dangerous case of Hep C,
don't let this happen to you.

Next time you are putting a needle
in you arm or leg
hog it
tell the losers to get lost
do your own injection
stay healthy
be contemporary.
be Bush.

Day In The Life -- We printed out the best of our vacation photographs. Judy took some photos that deserve to be award winners. She does have a great talent for nature photography. She went back to work this morning and I will have to get used to being alone all over again --well at least I won't have to worry about Hep C. Best news upon our return is learning that Bush's approval ratings are down to 40%. Is there anyone to the left of him who can eventually take his place?

Questions

Memorial Day,
America's day of the dead

how many have died
so that bright light rip off casinos might flourish
on Wall Street and Las Vegas?

So that a nation
living in bashed in mobile homes
might draw energy from crystal meth
and mega churches
of Christian patriotism

and
Dubya get his dry drunk kicks
on Rt. 666.

Just ask a tumble weed
when it's tumbling in the wind.

We had dinner last night with J and D at Wong's King Portland's new and certainly best Chinese Restaurant. Afterwards we went to D's new photography studio and he took a bunch of digital shots of Judy and me. His technology is higher than a kite and lots of fun. It was a very pleasant evening. J and D are always great company. This is the last day of our vacation and we want to spend it well.

It's Memorial Day and time to ponder how America is destroying itself as it destroys Iraq.

Around The World In 80 days as a martial arts movie? Jackie Chan takes up the comic valet part once played by Cantinflas, the great Mexican film comic (1956) and doing slap stick Kung Fu in the company of the enduring Victorian inventor Phileas Fogg. On a bet, they are trying to get around the world in 80 days but Chan has a private and secret purpose for his journey. The film is light hearted fun with lots of guest appearances of famous performers and naturally some of the best scenes are shot in China. There are also some good pokes at British colonialism.

In Memory

FDR leaves us many monuments
in art and architecture
even archeology,

New Dealers
discovered and recovered
a thousand year old Indian village in Arizona
built countless roads and dams
and amazing resort buildings
of fantastic logs and rocks
in National Parks
developing an imaginative architecture
of democracy
and commissioning painters and playwrights
to inspire humanity.

Besides corpses
what monument will George W. Bush leave behind?

Day In The life -- We spent an afternoon figuring out how to load hundreds of photographs of our recent Western vacation into the computer. We plan to print out thevery best of them and use the rest for a slide show with which to torture our closest friends. And to our closest friends -- much thanks for all your kind responses to the great news of my Hep C cure. You all have been really great.

We saw Bad Education. A pitch dark cinema noir Spanish film (that could never be made by an American company) directed by Pedro Almodóvar and staring Gael Garcia Bernal. It's all about a priest's sexually assaulting a young pupil in Catholic school, blackmail, murder, and opportunistic ambition. After a killing, the two perpetrators go to a cinema noir film festival and one of them opines that "he thought every film was about us." For all its pain and shame and Hitchcockian touches of mystery, the film also has a sense of irony and very dark comedy. Garcia Bernal is great, especially when drag dressing in a tight fitting gown. Though it is a bit odd to look at his handsome face and remember the guy recently played the young Che. Ah, Acting!
