The Chupah Of Hypocrisy

Arthur J. Finkelstein
is called the architect
of Jesse Helms' political power.

Helms hating homos!

Finkelstein runs campaigns
for right wing demagogues
feeding on gay blood and flesh.

Arthur recently married his male lover
of 25 years
so they could have equal legal protection
with heterosexuals in hospitals
and all playing fields of human right and wrong.

Arthur also plies his trade in Israel.
Netanyahu owes him some favors
cause he got him elected,
so does Helms
neither was at the wedding,
none of the stable showed up, cause hypocrisy
is a small world
after all.

Mazel Tov!

Day In The Life -- I got a phone call from Barbara L. She enjoyed doing her poetry show on KBOO with me. And received favorable reactions from her listeners. She wants me to do it again and I certainly will. Nick C, my Australian friend is off to England to read a paper at Cambridge on the Chicago Conspiracy Trial. He frequently sources a book, The Conspiracy Trial which was co-edited by my wife Judy. I was deported from England in the early 70s and I'm not sure if I can go back.
Queen Liz, if you're reading this, let me know.

We saw a feature movie called The Anarchist Cookbook. I first discovered that notorious book back in the 1960s when I was part of something called the International Liberation School and we were thinking of adding bomb making to our cariculum. The book contained many bomb making receipes but some were inaccurate and people blew themselves up. The faculty did not add the book to its reading list. The 2002 movie version, set in the contemporary world, is a little better. Its protagonist is a would-be anarchist named Puck, a weak willed idealist who will quickly fall under the evil influence of Johnny Black who shows up one day at the Hippie-Yippie libertarian commune and gradually takes it over. Black is a villainous nihilist who eventually aligns the commune with terrorists of all political stripes including Nazis. And boy, do these guys concoct an evil and explosive plan. In the mean time our anti-hero falls madly in love with a Republican sorority sister who likes to dress up in leather and whip his ass. So what is the film really saying? I guess (a la Marx bros.) it's an absurdist comedy that makes fun of everybody and the moral of its story is that there is no moral. Except maybe recognizing that fact and then doing yourown thing. But doing it in a responsible way. If you think the world is going to Hell and you want to save it, the Anarchist Cookbook, book or film, is certainly not your joint of tea.

Gradualism

Living in pre-fascist pollution
warming the earth, freezing hearts
with knives of ice age calculation,

theocrats upholding rule of God and Capital
burning the Reichstag
one day at a time,

killing freedom
but keeping its corpse alive
on feeding tubes
and
lots of lies.

Day In The Life -- This is not best time in my life to discover painkillers do serious collateral damage, like the American bombs, that kill entire wedding parties and the one target terrorist. Now that I'm 65 and my body is tightening and arthritis keeps flaming on, I'm not amused that mother's little helper might give me bad skin and a heart attack. Of course none of this poison is as dangerous as George Bush on vacation.

------
The Daily Show's Jon Stewart was really cooking last night about how the Bush administration was using the Pope's death to peddle its "culture of life" while refusing to answer questions about the Pope's opposition to the death penalty and the President's hang 'em high record in Texas.

Too Much, Too Soon

Bush vampires
better be team biters
no freelance chomping or sucking
like Trent Lott thought he had freedom
to haunt old southern plantations
sipping mint juleps through his hood.

Now DeLay
embarrassing the Bush Bureau
with unmitigated private corruption
and thug bully threats
going far beyond
acceptable targets of oppressive opportunity
even Republican judges being jumped in alleyways
ruled by Congressional thugs.

Remember when Joe McCarthy
attacked the army
on his candle's way to extinction?

When Cheney says he's going too far
Uncle Tom DeLay
better cool it
or share Trent's Lott.

Day In The Life -- Judy and I spent a part of last night at the Planned Parenthood office as part of their annual fund raising phone-a-thon. My wife is great at asking people for money, that's what she does for a living. I would rather be in Philadelphia but I believe in the pro-choice cause so I made endless phone calls. When we came home we caught the season's last episode of West Wing. Imagine a moderately liberal Democrat running against a moderately conservative Republican and both candidates are principled. West Wing has gone Sci Fi and I expect Captain Kirk to be named Secretary of State.

Wolves OF Wall Street is an awful movie with interesting moments. As you may have guessed, the Wolf Brothers aren't your ordinary Jewish commodity traders, they are human beings turned into sadistic monsters by greed and the capitalist system. Thus far the story line is quite realistic, unfortunately the plot that frames this insight is poorly organized and never makes any sense. And how come the moon is always full? Still there is occasional strong dialog effectively delivered and the building the wolves use for their money making is fantastic. Actually in real life, this somewhat scary and baroque architectural masterpiece is a block off of Wall Street. I know this, because I worked there 46 years ago. The wolves sized me up but I didn't wet their appetites.

Feel Good Tragedy

All that good warm feeling
pouring out of Christian kindness
making westerners godly angels of repair
for newly formed
Tsunami People's Republic of Death,

money went running to its salvation
cheering multitudes of miracles
like the prophet who survived in a whale
till rescued by Ahab
he came out singing God Bless America
shedding warm tears of cosmic gratitude.

Nothing's been done to clear the rubble
or rebuild a single hut
cause there's no plan
but
lots of sexual abuse
in the barbedwire camps
of enforced genorosity
but
lots of money is missing in the system
but
good American Christian kindness
is so exhausted after Terri Schiavo and the wicked judges,

besides there's something
Godless
about confusing numbers
of fuzzy math.

Day In The Life -- My new Australian friend came by for hours of interview for his Ph.D. thesis and book about the Chicago Conspiracy Trial and the Chicago riots of 1968, his special interest is in law and rule breaking on the part of US government officials including the trial judge. He's an energetic friendly guy who told me that Australia would be a great place for Americans escaping Bush America. He'll be lecturing in Cambridge and also writing some articles. Nice guy that he is, he left us with a bottle of excellent Australian wine.

We saw another Jackie Chan movie, this one was directed by Chan and titled "Who Am I" It's shot in South Africa and Rotterdam. Chan is a soldier protecting scientists who know how to make a super weapon. Of course the scientists are kidnapped by super villains. Jackie is in a plane crash and forgets who he is, but fortunately he's nursed back to health by a kindly African tribe. There's lot of great fights mixed with the usual Laurel and Hardy comic chaos. One of the most fun scenes takes place in Rotterdam where our hero delivers Karate kicks while wearing traditional Dutch wooden shoes and he even finds time to catch a dog falling out of a window. The canine licks his face. Well done, Jackie

On Being Mythic

Went on the wireless
reading poetry,
answering questions
about
my memoir
as a hero of forgotten ancestors.

My part came on at 10.15 pm
when I'm usually dozing
if I can't stand CSI cutting up heads
or get tired of giraffes in the Serengeti.

I read some verse
I wrote
in early days
of Iraqi war tragedy
and
a poem about my wonderful wife.

These days heroism is defined
as going to a radio studio
when I'm up past 10.
---------
Day In The Life -- I went on Barbara LaMorticella's poetry radio show on KBOO last night. It was fun and in the studio there was a lively and hardly mainstream crowd. I talked about my memoir and read some poems. It was great to be on the air and not just answer questions or give opinions. Whenever I do TV or radio stuff in the future I should insist that they let me read a poem. Although the TV guys would probably edit it out at first chance. It was fundraising week at KBOO and unfortunately the donations have not been pouring in. But I was told things picked up a bit during Barbara's show. Today I will be playing host to a visiting Australian, who located me on the web and wants to interview me about the Chicago Conspiracy trial for his Ph.D. thesis.

As The World Turns

What can you call a guy
who hated homosexuality
condemned feminism
helped destroy socialism
promoted a Mel Gibson film?

You can call him a dead Pope.

Rumors persisting from reliable blogs
warn of a Bushian intervention
in Papal election
insuring selection
of American born again Pope
Protestant the First.

Neo Cons saying
in a global economy
Catholics must share their Church
like good Christians
like Iraqis sharing oil
like Afghanistan sharing
its poppies of the field.

Insiders say Bush senior
already a holy father
has the right stuff
and time to kill.

Day In The Life -- I get a lot of requests from people writing papers, books or doing a thesis on Yippies,
Chicago 68 etc. There's a guy coming over tomorrow who is visiting from Australia and doing his Ph.D. on the big Conspiracy Trial and then a phone interview with an undergraduate thesis writer is in the works. It's great to have once been a part of making a bit of history. When you get old you can energetically participate in its rewriting. We once again ate Fong Chong's version of Chinese food. I've been shy of the restaurant because we ate there a lot when I was doing Chemotherapy for Hep C, the restaurant's old line mild Cantonese flavors were easily digestible. So, I identified the place with Chemo. But I finally got over it. I'll be on KBOO FM tonight at 10pm, reading poetry and talking about my book. KBOO now streams everywhere--so listen in.

We saw Walk ON Water an Israeli film of action and absurdity, which challenges just about every taboo in Israeli society. Machismo, assassinating Arab terrorists, persecuting Arabs, bias against homosexuality, Jewish self pity and an enduring hostility to all Germans forever, are all subjected to criticism and a dose of satire. The film's complicated and sometimes comic plot centers on a rough tough handsome Mossad hit man with multiple licenses to kill. He's quite cold blooded and proud of his work until his wife commits suicide and leaves a note that rusts away his character armor and leaves him vulnerable to real life. In the end the film is about whether or not he can carry out one last "hit" and this time the contract is not on an Arab but an ancient dying German war criminal. In the process he befriends the criminals grandchildren under the guise of being an Israeli tourist guide. The German film Downfall, which portrays the massive war time suffering of the German people, which came about as a result of Hitlerism invites us to wonder about maybe and finally forgiving them but doesn't answer the perplexing question. The Israeli Walk On Water offers an answer, we cannot forgive the older generation but the younger one, the grand child generation is innocent of the crime and quite forgivable. Its even likable.

White Hats, Black Hats

Columbine released
for their five minutes of fame
humans
wanting greater humanity and control
over guns.

Now
an Indian kid shoots the shit
out of his high school chums,

in the Year Of Our Bush,

the mood is saying
sucker get your gun
great armed
for the great American shootout
at high noon
coming soon
to your neighborhood school and factory.

A nation is born and dies.
From Deadwood we came
to Deadwood we return.

Wait for me Wild Bill.

Day In The Life--We went to see a flick at the Cinema 21 We got to the theater a bit early so we walked around NW Portland and dropped in on the Laura Russo Gallery and Judy and I had our minds blown by some of Michael Brophy's latest paintings. The guy paints giant trees that can only grow in your soul. One of his works filled an entire gallery wall with a northwest old growth dreamscape, where each tree was a forest.

We saw the great German film Downfall (Der Untergang). It's about Hitler's (he's played brilliantly by Bruno Ganz) last days in the bunker when the supposedly thousand year Third Reich was being blasted to bits by Russian artillery, Told from the point of view of Hitler's young female secretary, the amazing success of the film is to portray the Fuhrer as both pathologically cruel but also quite human and capable of modest kindness and warm sentiment. The point is all of the "monsters" including Borman and Goebbels were really human, but human in an ultra depraved state. Mrs. Goebbels poisons all of her own sweet children who came to the bunker because they wanted to see good old Uncle Hitler. The film's mood is appropriately dark and Shakespearean tragic, Hitler raves about German units encircling the Russians, when the divisions have already been destroyed and nobody speaks truth to his power. (See Bush and his WMD's.) But in case you start feeling sorry for these characters, the horrific battle footage from the streets surrounding the bunker reminds the audience that these guys brought it on themselves and just about everyone else. If you wonder about just where in their souls did the capability to kill six million Jews come from, take note of the fact that Hitler and many of his comrades cared nothing about the death of millions of Germans who loyally followed them into Hell.
