Imagine That

Millions of faithful
praying for the Pope
how many asking for a vegetative pontiff
mindlessly surviving forever?

It's a superior spiritual state
of grace and purity
where no wicked thoughts enter a mind
that no longer exists.

A vegetative holy father
could say nothing stupid
about Gays
or Jews
or feminism
or abortion.

Keep him plugged in.
Imagining a Pope,
who never says dumb things.

Day In The Life -- We had a reunion dinner here last night, with a bunch of good people we knew from the old and defunct New Jewish Agenda organization. It was a progressive Jewish group, that supported the creation of a Palestinian State, security for Israel and lots of other good things. We used to have Friday night dinners like this all time and they were fun. Lots of good talk and good food. Last night, I made my traditional chicken and potatoes dish. There is a new Jewish peace group Brit Tzedeck on the scene, and a couple of its members were present talking about BT's activities. It all made for a very pleasant evening.

Food Fights

1

Bill Kristol caught a pie in the puss
working the college circuit
running into ghosts
of Laurel and Hardy
inspiring vengeance
against pretentious neo con jobbers.

Bill finished his rap,
earning Quaker college cheers
as he cleaned the other cheek.

2

Pat Buchanan
got doused with salad oil
during paleo-rounds
at podunk community college,
cutting short his comments
he cleaned his hair.

Guess this anoints him
for entering sacred vegetative state
in good taste.

Day In The Life -- I found my poem Vegetable Nation on a Korean language website. My untranslated work was the only English on the page. I've been reading my poems out loud. Practicing for my Monday night reading on KBOO (see yesterday's blog) and it's fun to discover how slightly different sounds and tone emphasis can bring new possibilities into the mix. A while back I appeared in a Biography Channel, life of Abbie Hoffman feature. I recently viewed the video, which was shot while I was living deep in chemotherapy Hell. In real life, I felt and eventually looked miserable. But you wouldn't know it from the video. I looked and sounded healthy. They call it Acting!

We saw HBO's Air America. It tells the story of the difficult, almost fatal birth of America's only liberal talk radio network. Due to financial mismanagement the station came very close to an early death. The film shows the talk hosts to be very likable, including Franken and Garofalo and so are most of the behind the scenes technicians and wheeler dealers. Against the odds, the liberals start beating the right thugs in some of the ratings and the liberal network gets new financial backing and survives. I couldn't help but notice that at the beginning the program hosts talked mostly about the war in Iraq. Nowadays it's hardly mentioned, though the casualty figures on all sides are growing and Iraq's economy and infrastructure are being destroyed. I'm still very glad these characters are there, but what gives?

The Brotherhood

High Rabbis, Sheiks and all sort of Popes
holding press conference on behalf
of interfaith heterosexual pride power
cleansing Jerusalem's streets,
purifying the air of filth's corruption

keeping fagelahs
from partying and parading
in King David's City
of holy moly hosannas.

Only the King can dance naked in its streets
fucking whoever fits his fancy.

Day In The Life -- I'm started practicing reading my poetry out loud. I'll be doing that on KBOO this Monday at 10pm. I've given a million speeches and publicly read from my prose -- I've even done that to Jazz. But never have I read a poem in public. A friend of mine who has been on chemo for six months (for Hep C) found out the virus is now undetectable. This is very good news and congratulations and carry on.

We saw The Missing, it's a classic type western in which a daughter is kidnapped by an amazingly scurvy bunch of Apaches and her mother sets out to get her back. Cate Blanchett playing the mother, must make a truce with her own estranged father. He is a white man (Tommy Lee Jones) but he follows Indian ways and would know how to follow the kidnappers trail. For all its chick flick bits and pieces and its evoking Indian magic and witchcraft, The Missing is a rather ordinary well made, well acted formula western of quest and redemption. The visuals, especially the scenes of snowy expanse are quite compelling.

Preacher Man

Wanting to support him
figuring he's what we have left,
forgiving financial corruption
forgiving his supporting High School corporal punishment
forgiving Hymie Town and gutter religion,

because he was with King
and talks the talk
he always won forgiveness.

Using now
that glorious talk
for saving Terri
from her wicked husband
cruel courts and cruel fate
in the name of life and love,
oh Rev. Jesse,
wrought a miracle in Florida

cause miraculously,
this time,

I'm not forgiving him.

Day In The Life-- My article, Take Back The Life Force, which appeared in yesterday's blog, also showed up in CounterPunch and the hits on my web site jumped to the sky. I also got a bunch of interesting e-mails, The article obviously got some people to thinking. But not the guy who got right to the point and called me an asshole. I congratulated him on the clarity of his words.

We saw the rock opera Tommy. It's based on The Who's legendary work and music and was directed by wild man Ken Russell. The mad music and the crazed visuals are in perfect sync. Its all about war, abuse, pseudo pinball religion and fake messiahs. The 60's influence, its politics and culture was rapidly fading. But the 1975 made Tommy, seems like a final shot at turning it all into high culture rather than oblivion.

Day In The Life -- Judy and I got into a dinner conversation about what it meant to be really pro-life and about the moral fraud being perpetuated by the right wing movement that calls itself pro-life. Our talk prompted me to write this rant.
-------
Take back the life force by Stew Albert

Back in the 60's we were all about life, we were pro-life. We tried to hold a festival of life in Chicago during the 1968 Democratic Convention, we talked endlessly aout the life force and our drugs were life drugs as opposed to the death downer drugs consumed by our parents.

Now in 2005, it's the Christian crazy right wing that's talking about how they stand for a culture of life and that their secular liberal enemies are pro-death. It's true that I've seen a couple of obnoxius die-ins presented at peace marches but besides that, what the hell are the crazies talking about?

When the right wingers proclaim they are pro-life they usually mean that they worship fetuses and oppose aborting them, even if the life of the mother may be at stake, or the poor woman was raped or she just can't afford to have a kid or she might go nuts if she had one. They figure the woman's body is Christian State property and who cares what she thinks because "life" comes first. Of late, the right wing version of "life culture" is being pushed around the issue of human beings who through some misfortune live on in a vegetative state. You can't mercifully pull the plug even if the best scientific evidence indicates that the poor person can't improve or come remotely close to getting better. What do scientists know anyway? They think Terri Shiavo and Jesus are descended from monkeys.

These same folks used to cheer George Bush when he was governor of Texas and sent living thinking human beings to the execution chamber with as much relish and about as easily as he ate hamburgers. And these same life supporters also rooted for Dubya when he opted for shock, awe and torture in Iraq. So what's up with the "life can be beautiful," except if you're on welfare, born againers? Do they have a rational bone in their head?

But what of the progressives. What's happened to their festival of life? It seems the liberals have folded their tents and let their worst enemies have their best word. Why has this happened? The right wing put up its pro-life shingle when they came out against legalized abortion and the liberals said, so what, we are pro-choice. I'm sorry liberals but the word life carries a lot more magic than does choice. When I think of choice, I think of consumers and people looking at menus. When I think of life, I think of energy, reflection, activity, love, growth, development, compassion and community. Choice takes me to a shopping mall. I'm not saying that finding a bargain or two isn't fun but it doesn't measure up to reflection and love.

What we of the original and most honest pro life movement should be saying to those who have stolen our words, is that we are going to take back the life force. You guys are hypocrites who forget about the care and welfare of human beings once they are born and can actually think and feel and ask questions about the meaning of life. You lose interest in them because they are no longer "pure" and "innocent" but let one of them experience a major trauma to their brain and lose any capacity to think and act. Ah, then the "purity" returns and those who want to end their misery and the artificial maintenance of a breathing brainless heart, become anti-life crucifying mean spirited absolutely evil Nazis. You guys must hate the fact that human beings have free will, that's why you don't care about executions, people living out on the streets, napalmed cities and back alley abortions. People with free will might commit sins, so let them live in hell.

Let us progressive, liberals, humanists and reasonable thinkers reclaim the banner of life culture by saying, we are about stopping wars, providing health care, protecting social security, letting women decide about what should happen in and to, their own body, saving the environment, making sure everyone gets three square and nutritionally worthy meals a day and gets to think for themselves and speak for themselves and let people know that maybe they don't ever want to live on as a brainless vegetable, and let's reclaim life by making sure every homeless person is offered a home that isn't a prison..

Its time to take on the hypocrites and their subtle deadly message about how real human beings are worthless sinners who deserve prison, punishment and poverty. That's what the crazies stand for and it has absolutely nothing to do with life.

We saw this season's last episode of HBO's Carnivale. The devil it seems may have (in honor of Easter?) resurrected himself as a woman! Career opportunities for woman are certainly improving, at least on television.

Day In The Life -- Judy painted the bathroom floor a high gloss of blue and we went driving in the rain for a new bathroom rug. It was Easter Sunday, a Christian not a national holiday but lots of big chain stores were closed including Pier 1, Target, Costco, and Home Depot. We scored a rug in the obviously devil worshipping Bed Bath and Beyond. Oddly, the Christ Is Us book store was open and doing business in the Troutdale Mall. If any consumers in Christ are reading this, please let me know if mega chain store closing for Easter is an old custom or is a more recent Bush product.
------

We saw Taking Lives -- Its a "find the serial killer" thriller shot in Montreal and Quebec City staring Angelina Jolie as an FBI profiler on loan to the Montreal cops. She figures out the killers MO and motivations only to fall dangerously into his web. He's a guy who hates himself and kills people, so he can take over their lives. Alas, he always get bored with his new identity. More films should be shot in French Canada, the visual mix of Europe and America is unique. Taking Lives is inspired in its textures and terror by Polansky's work and there is a little bit of Hitchcockian irony thrown in for good measure. It's mostly an engrossing work but the Keifer Sutherland, you think he's "one thing but your wrong" bit is just a little too unreal and obvious.

Easter's Gloomy Sunday

Souls dying slowly
of Holocaust and Hiroshima,
of too many tearful trails,
the roots going first
smashed to smithereens
by endless evil
administered calmly
for fun, profit and the high purposes
of twisted mouths and forked tongues

If all roots
have been yanked from love
a soul's cell will not renew,
dying instead,
on the 11 o'clock news
of fake humanity
spreading democracy with napalm
worshiping Jesus
resurrected as a vegetable.

Day In The Life -- Judy's been saving a rainy day task, and yesterday the rains finally came. She is repainting the bathroom floor. Besides that event we spent a day watching movies, getting pissed at Bush and his crazy Christians, and learning with pleasure that Jessica will be working as an Oakland lawyer this summer and coming up here for Passover.
---------
Rosenstrasse -- Directed by Germany's highly respected Margarethe von Trotter, the award winning film tells a little known tale of Nazi despotism. It's mostly about Jewish husbands and Christian wives and their struggle to stay together under Hitlerian rule. The racist Nuremberg Laws offered one exception to depriving Jews of all their rights. If a Jew was married to an Aryan they could not to be rounded up and sent to the camps. (Although they were all forced to work in munitions factories.) The Nazi's did everything they could to encourage divorce among the mixed marrieds but many Aryan woman stood by their men. Inexplicably the husbands are suddenly rounded up and the wives knowing each word in the relevant law mount a vigil outside the building that holds their imprisoned men. It's on a little street named Rosenstrasse. The husbands are kept in a building that was once a Synagogue but is now used by the Nazis for much darker purposes. The story of the almost Greek chorus vigil is framed through a highly personal narrative of a modern young German-American woman who journeys to Berlin to uncover the hidden reality of her mother's childhood. My wife and I were greatly inspired by this film of courage, humanity and the power of love in the midst of hell and hatred. In the end the Red Sea unexpectedly parts one last time.
