Judy and I are headed to San Francisco and daughter Jessica. My next blog will appear on January 31. I hope I'll have enough post chemo energy to walk up and down all those SF hills. At least I know I'll make it to North Beach and the City Lights Book Store. The Yippie religion requires occasional pilgrimages.

Running Mouse

Hillary Dillary Dock
again wants to be living
in the White House clock.

She's still supporting Roe v Wade
but calling abortion a tragic choice.
If you don't want a kid
its better to be reading the bible than fucking.
In a different way
Bill and Monica also solved the problem.

Hillary Dillary
strongly respects "all" people
who from religious passion
profoundly oppose abortion.

Even those who burn clinics and murder doctors?

TDA 77 -- So little money is invested in finding a cure or a vaccine for Hep C that interested doctors have to piggyback on the work done by those who research illnesses whose cure is generously supported by foundations, the government, walk-a-thons and tel-a-thons. So Hep C doctors learned from AIDS researchers about the importance of combining drugs (a cocktail) in combating a cruel virus. And since the Hep C chemo treatment causes serious Anemia as a side effect they use a drug, developed for those undergoing chemo for Cancer and use it for reducing Anemia in Hep C chemo patients. The piggy back approach is better than nothing and it has advanced the struggle against Hep C. But the current treatment is horrible and not reliable. It's going to take a lot more money and research to find a doable and reasonable cure. Maybe our fund raising slogan should be, "Your money or our life" ?

We didn't watch a movie last night. Too bad about Carson dying. I remember him pounding hilarious stakes into Spiro Agnew for taking bribes in his Vice President's office. Carson was relaxed and cool but when called for, he could strike deadly blows.

Catskill Cabin

Streams freezing, pipes cracking
arms breaking on ice
snow boiling on a stove
pantries running out,

all surveillance called off
because of inclement weather
but it's just the beginning of his second term.

TDA 76 -- My post Hep C chemo walking ability is improving (at least in shopping malls). My legs are stronger, my back doesn't hurt as much, I don't get out of breath at every step and I have more endurance. It's a big improvement over the chemo period but I still get too tired too soon.

We saw Levity. Billy Bob Thornton plays a guy who unexpectedly gets out of prison after 23 years for killing someone in a robbery. He was a young man who slew another young man. With his hair grown long and his manner become gentle, the ex con attempts to redeem his life and maybe earn some forgiveness from the woman whose brother he murdered. Thornton is low key brilliant in the part, suffering for his sins, but not feeling sorry for himself. Levity offers an unyielding portrait about how young lives can be wasted and ruined over nothing in particular but also that some of the damage can be repaired.

Cold Out Here

New ice age offering
a splendid moment
before freezing hope.

White bright powder
falling continuously on ugliness
makes mean Manhatten streets seem innocently pure
for a day.
It might do the same
for Bush.

TDA 75 -- We went to a NARAL banquet at the Hilton. The group lobbies and otherwise engages in pro-choice political activity. The event was lively, optimistic and well attended but not as jam-packed as the Planned Parenthood luncheon which took place earlier in the week. A number of people noticed my post chemo haircut. I haven't worn my hair this short since I got out of the Santa Rita jail house in 1969. A mean guard sometimes made me get two haircuts a day. I recently had my hair cut very short because it lost its famous curliness under the stress of chemo. It held out for at least six months but ultimate it was chemically undone. My blonde locks became long and stringy. It gave me a run down look -- the short hair doesn't look half bad and maybe it will grow in curly -- a doctor promised me that, that would happen.

We saw The Human Stain, a film version of Philip Roth's great novel about Coleman Silk, a brilliant literature professor played by Anthony Hopkins, who gets purged from his powerful post as department chair because of making a witty remark in class that is cynically misinterpreted as anti Black. Silk was the first Jew to teach at this exclusive New England college, he's pushy and made lots of Wasp enemies but the kicker is he really isn't Jewish, he's Black. The Prof has been passing for years and the movie explains why. His life is further complicated by his falling in love with a working class white woman whose ex-husband, an ex-Vietnam vet, is insane and quite capable of murder. Filmed in compelling and muted colors, the movie version only does partial justice to Roth's book. It only develops certain parts of the complex story, putting emphasis on the sex and going easy on the ideas.
