Old Year's Eve

Nobody had a very good year
something grim about its time,
the new one
we prayed
better be better,
it can't get much worse,
maybe.

---

TDA 53-- Judy and I hung out with some friends and E & M's house. And at New Year's drank champaign that was mixed with real gold dust (it was originally a birthday present). Talk about conspicuous consumption, talk about excellent champaigne. I had the post chemo energy (supported by coffee) to stay up to midnight and enjoy myself. This morning we will complete our resolutions. We will write them down (as is our ancient custom) and reread them next New Year's when good and bad grades will be handed out.

We saw Kinsey, a biopic staring Liam Neeson, about the man who helped change sex and sexual attitudes in America. The Churchly Comstock right wing used to run a public sexual dictatorship and Dr Alfred Kinsey was among those heroes who overthrew the tyranny. It's an excellent film, mixing courage, comedy and tragedy. It probes the strengths and limits of Kinsey's sexual scientism and gives a very full portrayal of the methodology he and his assistants used in carrying out the legendary interviews which revealed that sex in America was a bit more varied than fancied by conventional wisdom.

Visiting The Sick

Fox News reporting
Angel Of Death
has collapsed with extreme exhaustion.
Rushed to a heavenly hospital
he was visited by George Bush
who presented the fragile patient
with a morale boosting Freedom Award.

The President conveyed his Godly gratitude
to the Dark Angel of Doom.

When it comes to punishing Pagans
washing away sins
him and that Tsu Nami guy
are world champions in any league.
Get well amigo.
They're still plenty
of them bad guys
needin' special attention.

TDA 52 -- At last my coughing is lessening. In any case I now have cough medicine with the good stuff. I am starting to do more intense dumbbell exercise in order to rebuild my Hep C chemo damaged muscle tone. But I don't plan on entering any contests. Too many scars.

We saw Artemisia. It's a true tale of Artemisia Gentileschi, the beautiful and talented daughter of one of Italy's most acclaimed painters. She also wants to be a painter, but Renaissance society and the Pope frown on women engaging in such bold activities. Much to his later regret, her father teaches Artemisia the basics. Filmed in the glorious French countryside and filled with the beauty of art, Artememisia is about a very strong woman who fights against impossible odds and eventually scores a semblance of success. Today her work hangs in the Louvre and the Met. Along the artist's difficult way she encounters passion, sex, brilliant esthetic innovation and betrayal. And she's tough as well as talented.

A Penny For Your Thoughts

Rising up angry
from his Crawford vacation
Bush denied being stingy
he's offering to build
a bridge over troubled tsunamis

that promise of a dime
for heartache
he's upping it,
now its two bits for pain.

House slaving away
in his last plantation days
Powell
tries disguising Scrooge
as Fezziwig's ghost
saying we give the wretched
more than anyone else.

Believe that one?
I'll bet you'll buy
WMD
found in Iraq
and marked down for New Year's.

TDA 51 -- My doctor says I can't take antibiotics for endless coughing and low grade fever because it would damage my already Hep C chemotherapy damaged immunity system. It's what my old Black Panther friends used to call "a trick bag" -- my battered immunity system caused the problem and then my battered immunity system won't let me take the drugs to fix it. My only option is gulping narcotic cough medicine and waiting it out. Sooner or later I'll get better.

We saw The Medallion, it's a partially acceptable Jackie Chan effort. A "chosen one" little Asian kid has a medallion that gives him the power to bestow eternal life and the ability to fly. Naturally an arch evil "rule the world" white guy is out to steal the magic medallion. And of course Hong Kong cop Chan is trying to stop him. Nothing unpredictable happens but the fight scenes are fun. Jackie Chan is the only Marshal Arts master who can work inventive slapstick into his battles. Unfortunately his craft never seems capable of beauty or magic.

Happy New Year

CIA being purged of truth tellers
as bombs and bodies be bursting in Iraqi air
as Susan Sontag, remnant of leftist glamor, dies
as tsunami's death toll
is being pegged at 76,000,
lot's of them kids.

What an appropriate way
for our Year Of The Monkey to end,
with Dubya in the White House
nature in rebellious fury
mega death in the daily news,
ruling class ruling and chaos commanding.

-------
TDA 50 -- Nothing much to report on the health front -- I'm stuck in the status quo of a never ending Cold and I can't tell the difference between its symptoms and residual Hep C chemo side effects. Unfortunately, it seems, my doctor is on vacation.

We saw Naked Weapon, a Chinese made porn/martial arts movie about young girls who are kidnapped and taken to an island where for a decade they are trained in the cruel art of assassination by way of sex and violence. It's a pointless bad movie with one extraordinary saving grace. The fighting scenes are among the best ever filmed, showing a combination of Kung Fu, acrobatics and dance, indeed they present a hypnotic ballet of death, just like the NY Times' front page.

Tis The Season

Wall Street execs
lining up for new Ferraris
it's Christ In Christmas
bonus time in Bushlandia.

In Salinas CA
all libraries are closing
cause they're out of funds.
Being John Steinbeck's hometown
where his literary archives
are maintained by its librarians.
Tell us why
Preacher Casey isn't raging against sin?

45,000 drowned in SE Asia
cause they can't afford
a Tsunami warning system
cause they spend it on luxury hotels
for guys with Ferraris.

Lots of fine wine drunk by the gentry
in seasonal celebration
I see plenty of grapes.
Where is wrath?

----------

TDA 49 --- My annoying cough lingers on. I contacted my doctor by e-mail. But she's probably on vacation. My chemotherapy battered immunity system must not be in great shape.

We saw Cybertracker in which a global corporation that produces cyborgs merges with the American government and puts judge, jury and executioner cybertrackers in charge of the judicial system. America is on the brink of total fascism but a martial arts master human policeman has a change of heart and joins up with the rebels. Lots of exploding automobiles happen along with lots of poor acting but the film does offer a persuasive warning about high tech's dictatorial dangers.

Swept Away

25,000 drowning in Asia
without Life Gods protection
during Christmas weekend
of good will to men
and desperate driving
and spending.

No compassion in this empty cosmos
except what we feel

but Jerry Falwell gonna say
the dead folk
were pagans
swimming against Christ's tide.
Now they are in Hell.

TDA 48 -- Another dip in the hot tub, my Hep C chemo skin wounds still burn a bit but the bathing is well worth the effort. The family made meat balls (turkey meat) and spaghetti last night. It's our oldest specialty.

We saw The Day After Tomorrow. It's about how global warming brings about a drastic change in the weather. Hard rain and snow really does fall. The United States and all northern nations are now covered by a new ice age. Surviving Americans and their government all must attempt to reach and gain admission to Mexico. The melodramatic sub plot about father-son conflict is very thin but who cares because the special effects are unbelievable. It really does look like New York City has fallen into a very deep freeze.

Muslims planned to turn an old sod farm near Memphis into a cemetery, but angry neighbors protested, complaining the burial ground could become a staging ground for terrorists.....AP

Night Of The Living Jihad?

Muslim corpses lose interest in Allah.
they also lack
appropriate hand eye coordination
for hijacking airplanes.

Cemeteries
are staging grounds for Zombies
who have no known religion.

TDA 47--- We went to the movies and upon returning Judy made her specialty Crab and Black Bean Sauce for dinner. All Albert's were very content. Jessica has a Cold and mine continues to linger. is it due to some Hep C chemo weakening of my immunity system. It's been around for two weeks. I'll call my doctor if the Cold doesn't vacate my premises real soon.

We saw The Aviator, an engrossing biopic directed by Martin Scorsese and based on the early life of Howard Hughes, the weird and wild aviator, mega capitalist, movie director and lover of movie stars who eventually went completely nuts but left a brilliant trail in his wake. The film is also about the limitlessly corrupt ways the American capitalist system works, major politicians are bought and sold like hookers on Sunset Boulevard. Leonardo DiCaprio is very believable as the young Hughes, conveying a sense of the protagonists joy, imagination and limitless ambition. He is equally strong portraying Hughes as a tragic hero under going a step by step dissent into madness. There are also great and sympathetic portraits of Katharine Hepburn and Ava Gardner. Highlights include a fantastic recreation of the doomed Coconut Grove Hollywood night club with a dash of Cabaret thrown in and of Hughes as an over spending but absolutely original movie director. Oregonians should love the part about the Hughes designed world's largest airplane, the all wooden "Spruce Goose." with a wing spread longer than a football field, its detractors said it would never fly, but the aviator got it off the ground. The original dreamlike Goose, completely intact can be viewed at the Aviation Museum in Oregon.
