Unfriendly Takeover

American pharmaceutical industry,
if taken over
by Colombian Drug Lords of Bogota
would probably produce
higher quality product at lower prices
doing real research
inventing new products
producing anti depressants
that actually cheer us up
never by spending corrupt sums
on slick television commercials
filled with happy healthy faces
and no side effects.

---
TDA 39 - I think my cold might be easing and naturally I hope that remaining Hep C chemo side effects won't cause it to linger. Lead article in today's NY Times which exposes the information that the major drug companies are spending much less on inventive research and much more on TV commercials might help explain why the existing Hep C treatment is so inadequate both in its 50-50 cure rate and it awful side effects. And you can say the same thing for drugs that supposedly treat depression. Good News! Daughter Jessica returns to Portland tonight.

We saw Die Mommie Die. It's a send up of all those sixties soap operas about wealthy dysfunctional families on the verge of homicide. It stars cross dressing gender bending Charles Busch as the female lead. She is a once great singing star, who is now begging for gigs at Catskill Hotels and married to Sol, a wealthy Hollywood producer who hates her guts. So does her self righteous daughter and her maid. Only a gay and somewhat mentally defective son and a gigolo boyfriend feel her charms. Multiple murders ensue, as do unexpected plot twists in which nobody is what they seem and everybody likes to show it off. My favorite item is Sol's poisoned suppository.

Last Act

Old people parked in the Mojave,
a gathering of despair
hanging out
sharing coffee
American dreams barely remembered,
it was only something for kids,
now they're just waiting
for the Angel Of Death and deliverance
to come
beating its wings
on their mobile homes
waking them up
from a life long boredom
of desperate depression
proclaiming to the heavens
today's your dying day,
your lucky day.

------

TDA 38 -- My Cold continues and last night it merged with some of my surviving chemotherapy side effects. I hope I shake this soon. Still it's a measure of the chemo hell that as bad as I now feel, its nothing like the treatment's torture chamber mind/body experience.

We saw The Windsor Protocol. Its a Canadian made good/bad film about an attempt to resurrect Nazism in the postmodern world that was once designed by a bunker based Hitler himself. It involves the usual limitless amount of money, a surviving fascist fanatic from the good old days, blackmailed aristocrats whose parents once supported the master race and a corrupt very liberal politician who is willing to sell his soul for power. The action is fast paced, the acting OK, the young woman Israeli agent is really cute but the plot is just too improbable. Imagine basing a Nazi coup d'etat on the reliability of an American liberal politician.

Instant Relief

My nose and sinus
stuffed with crap
must be feeling
like Rummy's darkest mood
when even neocons are calling boldly
for his beheading.

It's a great way
for them
to be clearing nasal passages.

------
TDA 37 -- My annoying chest cold has become a terrible head cold. I woke up four or five times last night but after chemotherapy it seems like a mere bagatelle.

We saw Wonderland. And Alice didn't even make a cameo appearance. It's all about America's first male porn star big John Holmes after the fall. His once bright star has gone nova. He has become a seedy, hideously destructive coke dealer and addict who betrays everyone including his business associates, wife and girl friend. In the middle of his ugly life he's involved in a Mansonesque group murder and quickly becomes a major suspect. Wonderland is fast paced and visually choppy in highly appropriate ways. Val Kilmer does a great Holmes, making him interesting by occasionally revealing the few shards of decency he has left.

Good Morning America

Thick
morning fog blocking out
beautiful sunrise poetry
with fuzzy visions of trees
getting lost in the forest
of hard streets.
Only with sun and God hiding their faces
can Bush give out
freedom awards.

---------

TDA 36 -- I have an annoying chest cold. Maybe I went to one too many Chanukah dinners? I don't care. But Jessica is returning from SF this Saturday night so I better shake the bug. I guess my post Hep C chemo immunity system is still a little on the diminished side.

We saw Legend Of Earthsea Part 2. The plot keeps plodding on and very predictably. Unfortunately the second part has a bit less diverting magic, though there is a great talking dragon and some really fine Moorish castles.

A Little Justice

Pinochet's painful punishment
is appearing as a publicly humiliated
slightly senile old man
who thought he would be honored
forever
as savior of the nation.

His lawyers will stall
his friends in high places will crawl
and the 89 year old murderer and thief
is more likely to see the inside of a coffin
than a prosecutor's courtroom
he won't be appearing
on post office wanted posters
but you won't be seeing him
on postage stamps either.

----

TDA 35 -- I'm feeling OK with an improving mood and much more laughter. But I had trouble falling asleep and than I had dreams of being a hunted fugitive but in the best Kafka tradition I never learned my crime. A bad night is followed by some morning chills and fever. Recovery has one down for every two ups. I'm getting back my full soul and as it reemerges it makes me see who I really am.

We saw Legend Of Earthsea a made for TV film version of Ursula Le Guin's novel. A roguish and somewhat reckless young man is destined to be a very powerful sorcerer. The plot plods along and the acting is mediocre till the magic begins. This is no Harry Potter, but magic school scenes are fun with pretty good computer effects. Our young hero gets in a macho rivalry with an aristocratic rival student who belittles him for his working class origins. To prove his worth the young man tries to revive the dead, instead he brings a dangerous demon into the world who will attempt to absorb his all his powers. The usual earth shaking and titanic struggle ensues.

Lying Liars Redux

Pentagon increasing production
of global bullshit.
How much can they consciously spread
on the world's bread supply
of disinformation
in Europe and Arabland,
being recycled by Foxy Fox
for domestic distribution,
brass hats and warlords telling themselves.
If we can sell cars to Japan
we can also peddle our lies
in their market place
of ideas.

---------
TDA 34 -- We went to our third Chanukah dinner it was a festival of latkes and lamb based meatballs served up by EL and MZ --they even gave out gifts, what great folks they are. I felt better yesterday, reduced chills, fever and less night time anxiety -- the best news is that the Hep C chemotherapy induced Anemia is continuing to go away. I now have very little trouble breathing.

Again we came home too late for a movie but tonight we will watch the first part of a made for the tube sci fi spectacular flick. Comments will appear tomorrow.

Blues People

My soul
returning to a planet
of sad and angry people
still stunned by
Dubya's second coming
over dinner conversations
and mouths stuffed with latkes

a few talk longingly of cold Canada
freezing
somewhere over a rainbow
of something better.

It feels like
my whole world was sentenced
to compulsory chemotherapy

being
a blue state of mind.

------
TDA 33-- I was unusually sleepy and felt late afternoon and evening chills and fever. But because this is the era of post Hep C chemotherapy, I was energetic enough to go out again for dinner at a friend's (Barbara S) house. That's two nights in a row of enjoying someone's hospitality and we will do it all again tonight at E and M's. It was brilliant for Judy to ask for invitations when she spoke at the birthday party. I'm relearning how to get in a word edgewise when seated at a table with people who are finishing off their third glass of wine and I'm only allowed to have one glass. (There is no evidence that one glass of wine hurts the liver but alas there is provable harm in two)

We came home late and didn't watch a movie. Saturday Night Live brought the hammer of revenging satire down on Rummy for his arrogant and stupid speech to American soldiers who were bound for Iraq.
