Heat

Melting Poles
will flood the coasts
who cares?
They are black and blue states?

-----------

Reverence

Newspapers headlining
Arafat
"a revered leader is buried
amidst grief" they proclaim
and a month ago their pundits declared
any Ramallah cab driver could beat him
in a free election.
-------
Warning Label

Fallujah and Mosul are warnings of defeat
and overcrowded cemeteries
if so few insurgents
could killed and maim
so many Americans
what will happen on the day
when all patience
dies in the desert?

Let the tent maker speak.

TDA 4 -- Friday night came and went and I didn't plunge a needle into my thigh. First time in 11 months. What a great feeling. Someone who recently began the chemo called me and we talked about how I got through the treatment. What helped me. My wife, daughter, friends, blogs, movie reviews, poems, crazed needle sculpture, and dumbbell workouts and visits to wetlands and bird preserves. Anything that diverts the mind from suffering is good. Also my theory of schlep power. Since you are going to be sick anyway and staying in bed won't help -- you might as well get up and do something--start schlepping. I suppose I now know more about Hep C now than most doctors. Nothing like some personal experience. I still have all the chemo side effects but they are hitting in me with less intensity--its subtle but I can feel the difference.

We saw Gothika. Halle Berry plays someone who really is seeing life from both sides now. As a highly respected shrink in a prison hospital that is run by her husband, and then as cruelly treated inmate in the same hospital because she is accused of ax murdering her husband. At first she doesn't remember much of anything and spends the better part of the rest of the film figuring things out and regaining her power. A real and highly motivated ghost helps her along the way. The film is shot completely in dark surroundings, the hospital, the streets, houses and human souls offering little brightness and not much hope.

Nightmares

From too many places in the heart
of darkness
it hunts us down

Al Q and Vitamin E
are killing us
so is the fog of Portland
and Israeli traffic accidents
and what turned Arafat's liver
into such an embarrassing failure.
Cancel all Fallujah-Mosul wedding plans
you can't insure the event.

Darkness is on my trail
I would hide out in Canada
disguised as a Mountie
but boredom kills.

TDA 3 -- Nurse MJ called me with the results of my last blood test. They sucked. My Anemia turned dangerous in the last month of Hep C chemo treatment. My hemoglobin reading fell to 9.4 -- when I began the treatment (11 months ago) it was 16.00. MJ said she was glad the treatment was over -- they may have had to stop it anyway. She thinks the Anemia will go away with the absence of chemo drugs but just in case, she want me to take yet another blood test in two weeks. It's never over till its over.
I told MJ about the Kaiser pharmacy putting a smiling face on my last drug supply. It was a human reaching out through a large bureaucracy. The nurse said she would send a thank you note to the pharmacy. She said the nurses used to do things like that but one nurse objected.

We saw Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, a film that conjures up the romantic energy and optimism of the 19th century and the Byronic belief that individual human beings can and should do great things at the service of humanity. Dr. Victor Frankenstein tries to abolish all death with his experiments aimed at proving that dead flesh can be reanimated. Unfortunately a monster is created. But as the film brilliantly demonstrates, the monster is not really a product of Frankenstein's science, but of society's countless cruelties. No previous movie version of the story ever portrayed that stark truth as powerfully. Robert De Niro plays The Creature and Kenneth Branagh is his father, Frankenstein.

Yasser we hardly knew ye

Were you a stone revolutionary
devoting your entire life to serving the masses
or a greedy opportunist
living off their impossible dreams.
Were you decisive
a strong take charge kind of guy
or did the winds of Ramallah
bend you in every direction?
Were you for or against terrorism?
Were you a people's warrior
or a sporadic serial killer?

Yasser. Were you a good witch or a bad witch?

TDA 2 --- I actually did feel better yesterday, my first day off Hep C chemotherapy. I felt all the old side effects but they were a little less intense and my mood was certainly better. Joey the Rabbi offered an old Hebrew deliverance prayer for Judy and me to recite by way of marking the day. But for me, the most outstanding marking was my first glass of wine in 11 months. It was my ancient pal Chianti, turned a little smoother and Yuppie over the years. It felt like the gods had granted me an elegant and fantastic boon, I had only one glass sipped slowly with pasta but it was one of my best moments in 11 months. The recovery will be slow but improvement has begun.

We watched West Wing last night instead of a movie. It's nice to see that CJ is benefiting from Leo's heart attack. Well, at least he is alive. We will return to the flicks tonight.

Ashcroft To Ashcroft

Ashcroft set the standard
for fascist fools
ruling in Dubya's name
but became an embarrassing
laughing stock,
a silly high profile fanatic
inviting Laurel & Hardy cream pies
and nonstop ridicule.

A newer version
will be hideous
low key soft spoken
with a slight sense of likable humor
and a Patriot Act
bashing in your kibitzing brains
with severe warnings
and frightful dreams.

The Day After (TDA) 1 --I didn't take the poison pills this morning. I will never again take them. I went to Kaiser for my Chemo treatment blood test. I'll come back in six months to find out if the treatment worked. I went to a Planned Parenthood event last night honoring SL a former Federal Prosecutor and life long liberal. The place was packed. I was functioning at zero energy. It might be a mental trick but I really do feel a little better this morning -- it is a joy to wake up and not poison yourself.

We came home and watched the Daily Show, J Stewart offered a great piece of advice to the Bushies "you won the election, you can stop lying." It was too late to see a movie.

Clearing

Freedom and tanks
marching over Fallujah
exchanging corpses
blood flowing
in a fountain of death,
its just like clearing shrub in Crawford
on a churchless Sunday morning
while the cameras roll all over him.

--------

Day 326 -- The last day of Hep C chemotherapy. It's been 11 months of massive unpleasantness and much agony and it comes to an end tonight when I take my last three pills. Tomorrow morning I will go for a blood test but not take any morning pills. I declare the treatment is over. It's over. I hope the poison clears out quickly but my patience and durability will be available. Thanks to my splendid wife Judy, my great daughter Jessica and all my friends who stayed with me when the going got rough. I couldn't have crawled over the finish line without them.

We saw El Mariachi, a Mexican gangster-comedy film about a young Mariachi singer who always wears black and carries a guitar case, unfortunately so does a drug lord who is being hunted down by a rival. The drug lord carries a machine gun in his case. Of course mistaken identities ensue and everyone starts trying to kill the Mariachi . The film offers a believable portrait about how a small Mexican city can be completely owned by drug dealers. The script is well written, ironic and action packed, the acting is splendid as are the close-ups. And here's the amazing bottom line. The film was made for only 7,000 bucks!

Big Boss Man

Dubya declares
he wants deference
since he won the election,
now he's the legit Prez
and everyone should kiss his ass
and nothing but his ass
while the reindeer army
of Empire
keeps accomplishing its mission
again and again

shooting up Iraqi hospitals
uniting behind our President
pucker up.

-----------
Day 325 ---- I have two more days of Hep C chemo to go. Judy and I went to a "rehearsal" of a Planned Parenthood event. She was in a meeting and I fell asleep, sitting up in a chair. Then we came home and I slept some more, I then woke up and feeling feverish, I made dinner. It's hard to believe that the harsh self inflicted practice of Hep C chemo will end on Tuesday night. Its felt like an incurable disease but the cure begins Wednesday morning.

We didn't watch any movie last night but chose instead the Dallas reunion. It was kind of dull but also somewhat sentimental. After an hour we switched to Boston Legal.
I strongly recommend your reading "A Radical Line" by Thai Jones. It offers a powerful and personal account of three radical generations (including my own, his father and mother are my very close friends) . Jones succinctly covers an amazing amount of material in a unique way -- he is both inspiring and ironic.

A Lamb

Andrew Veal used to work in a Georgia computer center
but he's dead now
he shot and killed himself at Ground Zero
protesting Bush's victory,
he was our pain.

TV Dallas and JR are
coming back
along with Crawford Bush
but not LBJ and his eyes of Texas
Great Society,
these days only God is allowed to be great
and as usual he's very late
way too tardy for Andrew Veal.

----------

Day 324 -- Three more pill chemo days to go. Felt OK the first part of the day. I went to a Bat Mitzvah and enjoyably hung out with some friends. Most everyone I know is depressed and angry about Bush. Later on I got feverish and some chills, I fell asleep early.

We saw This is Spinal Tap. It's one of the best and funniest fake documentaries ever made. It's all about a values free on the skids British macho rock band trying for a comeback tour in the US, Their record album cover is censored for hideous sexism and most of their big gigs are canceled and everything else goes absolutely wrong. In one scene they can't even find the stage. The genius of this film is to get its hilarity from being only five per cent crazier than rock reality. This is what a talentless and stylistically opportunist band would really be like, when Rob Reiner is writing and directing the gags and the actors are permitted to say anything they wish, like there is "a fine line between genius and stupidity."
