Operation Pompeii

Mt St. Helens working in concert
with Comrade Ivan Hurricane's inspiration
fanatical follower of Earth First
blowing its terrorist top
planning major assaults
on civilians
who are taking candy from lumber barons
while guzzled gas
washes it all down.

Bush announces planned preemptive attack on volcano.
Kerry wants France to negotiate
Nader lives in the lava
but can't strike a match.

Day 287 -- Needle Countdown. As of today I have five more hep C treatment injections to go. This is the end my friend. News comes to us that Hep C is starting to be diagnosed in Vietnam Vets and in significant numbers. Since it frequently takes thirty years plus for symptoms to become noticable and since there was plenty of needle sharing back then, I guess it's not surprising. But when will these soldier boys get a break? They truly will go down in history as our Screwed Generation.

We saw Into The Badlands, a pitch dark western. Imagine Rod Serling and Clint Eastwood being blended into a bitter paste and you have this film. The Badlands are not the promised land of milk and honey, they are a desert of absolute doom whose only promise is death. They are a metaphoric zone where all the spin and razzmatazz of life are stripped away. We are forced to face our doom. We can do it with irony, resistance or fear but there is no exit. Face it we must.

Shooting Match

Last night's debate
reminds me of the time
a Brooklyn bully named John Malloy got beat up,
he always came around E. 29th Street
making fun of the Jewish kids
during stickball and kick the can
about how Jews
were Christ killers and lousy athletes.
Then some Jewish kid
who had been pumping iron for a few months
took his challenge
beating the shit out of him.
Never saw John Malloy again
maybe he went on to become a compassionate priest
in love with little boys.

Now that he's been slapped around the block
what's Dubya gonna do with his time and bloody nose?
Buy a new baseball team, maybe drill for oil?

Day 286 ---- Nurse Mary Jane called me and (as predicted) nothing much happened to my Anemia, in the past weeks. In fact there was a very minor improvement. So I'm stick at full medication, but look at the calendar, it's Oct 1. I have about a month and a week to go --it's almost over and out.

The Kerry performance last night was an up. He reduced Bush to repeatedly praising poor Poland and quoting approvingly from his very own puppet in Iraq. Bush's brain seemed to run out of energy about half way through the debate, he stopped saying anything new and concentrated on creating some very strange facial expressions. They all spelled loser.

We saw Winged Migration. It's all about a variety of birds flying half away around the world on a regular and repeating schedule. They never get lost and they do a lot better job than Columbus when it comes to finding India. It's hard to decide who is more amazing, the birds making this spectacular journey, or the humans with cameras who managed to keep up with them by employing balloon travel, airplanes and helicopters. My good friend Anita Hoffman became disillusioned with birds on her death bed. She looked out of her San Francisco window and always saw them stealing, fighting and making lots of noise. This movie might have given her a more balanced view.

Debating Society

Tonight the world hangs on an edge of doom
Bush and Kerry will debate for all the marbles
although they are in a dead tie
Kerry must come from behind
after all, he didn't
big time
lie us into a never ending war
or hand the economy over to pirates and pigs.
9/11 didn't take place when he was trying to read
a childen's book

Because Bush bullshits better
he's supposed to be
a decisive leader
who can fully protect our children
and chaste virginity,
our absolute need to feel wholly holy
being a pure victim conquering the world

from angry Allah Arabs
thoughtful Jews,
what's real and what is not.

---
Day 285 -- I'm waiting for the results of the blood tests, I took yesterday. If my Anemia is worse, they might cut the Ribavirin and I might feel a little better, on the other hand, less dosage might make the treatment less effective in finishing off the Hep C. My guess is nothing much happened in my blood during the last couple of weeks and they'll probably continue me on the dosage.
And I'll continue feeling like I'm being beaten up by five cops in the Berkeley police station's elevator. (1965 was a good year for such beatings).

We saw BASEketball, a completely silly, vulgar and occasionally funny satire of professional sports. Two slacker losers invent a game (it combines features of basketball and baseball) that catches on major league and revives the notion that sports should be fun and not just played for money, sex and fame. But the usual evil capitalist is on hand to corrupt everything. Don't worry about it though, the liberal plot is totally predictable.

Stuff It

N.Y. Natural History Museum guards
noticing night time giant stuffed animals
glowering and menacing
glass eyes glimmering sinister in the flickering shards of light
it all started after 9/11.

Candidates are looking for the Guards vote
promising that stuffed animals will run amuck
if their opponent wins.

Rummy proclaims:
Did we clean out the Baghdad museums?
Yes. We were hunting down stuffed Ayatollahs and Imams
but the kinder gentler crowd complained
that too many old plates were being broken,
now we hear specific Internet chatter,
the ten foot bears will be stuffing themselves
on us
if Kerry wins.

----

Day 284 ---- Sleeping too much. I did some medical web research and my numbers on Anemia have just entered the danger zone. Ordinarily they would cut back on dosages but I am near the end -- so they want to tough it out. But there are limits to toughness. If my numbers fall below a certain figure --I would have to stop using the drug (Ribavirin) all together and that could happen in a few weeks. I expected a quiet conclusion to the treatment but that is not to be. Anemia dangers? No energy and heart trouble.

We saw X2. The great mutant Marvel Comics X-Men are back. They bring with them even more spectacular special effects and enemies than ever before. As usual, they confront a kind of mass genetic racism that fears their mutations and wants to destroy them and fundamentalist and extremist responses from their own ranks. War and genocide hang over them, pity them perhaps, but remember there's nothing these mutants can't do.

Freaks

The only unelected President ever
will be on full display today
feel free to drop by for the chance of a life time
if you love him enough
by signing a loyalty oath
by spending hours handing out circulars
on the telephone.

He struts and sneers
boasts and bullshits
he's the leader you deserve
for your additional edification
we are also presenting the two headed man
and the human chicken.

Day 283 -- After a very hard Hep C side effects Sunday night and a not easy Monday morning, a CBS TV crew came by. The are producing a biographic feature on Abbie Hoffman for the Arts & Entertainment Network and they were going to interview me. Tough old Yippie that I am, I rose to the media's attention, rallied hidden strength and did a good job. The interview was a biography of my friendship with Abbie from the time we met (in 1967, outside the NY Stock Exchange -- see my web site for more info) till the day he died. And a little bit after.

Needle Countdown-- Six to go.

We saw Runaway Jury. What a cast! Gene Hackman, John Cusak and Dustin Hoffman. A New Orleans civil trial jury is going to consider a law suit that could conclude by holding the gun industry accountable for the murderous uses of its products. Naturally the big business gunsters are trying to fix the jury. But one independent juror (and his outside confederate) are trying to do some fixing of their own. Based on John Grisham's novel, fast paced and paranoid, the film has a surprise ending. See how far you are into the story before figuring it out.

Sobriety

George Bush
beat booze
embraced Christ
became President
a role model for rightious recovery
a light for when the terrible tunnel ends.

David W. Johnson
was just a junky
who went clean, clear and sober
enlisting for Iraq
as a cook
giving back to his Pentagon
embracing Jesus on the battlefied
he prefered killing to cuisine
a chaplain baptised his soul.

David isn't headed to the White House
his light at the end of the tunnel
was an oncoming train
guess his father doesn't rule the world.

Getting blown dead in a blasted Humvee
now the Iraqis are giving back.
David W. Johnson, formally of Portland Oregon
will never recover.
-------

Day 282 -- I got real sick last night. Post Hep C treatment very high fever. Then I had one of those crazy Interferon drugged dreams that never stop. There was some sort of effort being made to break an important sports record but nobody knew what the record or the sport was. I kept insisting and without restraint, that it was important to know about the record. But I couldn't come up with any good reasons. The dream lasted all through my early morning hours.

We saw The Impostors, directed, written and co-staring Stanley Tucci with Oliver Platt. It's a very pleasurable comedy, strongly influenced by the 1930s screw ball Laurel and Hardy style and also the more recent masterpiece, Some like it Hot. Two out of work actors, who like to perform in the streets, get in a fight with a famous Shakespearean star. Trying to avoid the police they accidentally wind up on an Ocean voyage where everyone is trying to con everyone else and love and extreme foolishness dominate the air. And then there is one guy (Tony Shalhoub, TV's Monk) who just wants to blow up the ship, kill everybody and create an ideal world.

Over And Out

Out of it
out of everything
a once prosperous town in the west
now a walking ghost
selling itself as
an anti terror training camp
noisy day in the desert
bombs bursting in air
anti personnel cactus accidentally cutting your flesh
Institutes of advanced poisoning
bringing show and tell corpses to front lawn patriotism
bargain basement Americans always for sale
no reasonable offer refused
the last picture show going on forever:
Invasion of The Body Snatchers

But our flag was still there.

-----

Day 281 ----- Usual weekend, complaints as Hep C treatment cocktail leaves its all purpose awful side effects. I went back into the hot tub yesterday but my treatment induced rashes still suffer from its chemicals.
Motorcycle Diaries--a movie about the young Che Guevara opening in Portland in a week- -the new, still to be published Philip Roth antifascist novel looks like a major winner.

Needle countdown. Six to go.

We watched Kill Bill: Vol. 1. Its a revenge film, a sort of Japanese spaghetti western featuring tons of super spurting blood, it's about honor, a true Samurai flick, it's Quentin Tarantino with magnificent quickly seen surfaces and a brilliant plurality of techniques. He sometimes goes black and white and there is an incredible Japanese animation sequence that makes beheading seem reasonable. For dedicated sadists, this scene should be a rewarding experience. Vol. 1 is only half the film, so we can't know what Tarantino is really up too till we see his other half.
