King Of The Jungle

A magnificent lion just moved into a Palestinian zoo
he used to live in an Israeli zoo
we thought he was Jewish
by the way he kept nodding his head
making many paw gestures when he roared
but he's become a striving for peace
good will gesture
from the Israeli zoo keepers to their Palestinian pals.

Nobody asked the lion
if he feels degraded or likes living in a cage
but my guess,
makes him a free thinking pagan
an amiable cat
gobbling for the gods
chewing up and swallowing all religious crazies
it's his form of prayer.

Day 266 -- I was more edgy yesterday but the three ibuproffens did give me a bit more energy and a bit less fever.

We saw The Dreamers. It's Bernardo Bertolucci's latest and perhaps most annoying film. It should be called Peter Pan's Last Tango In Paris. We are back in 1969 and massive worker and student uprisings are exploding French society. It's the very best time to be young, idealistic, smoke dope and have a great creative time. But for his own unclear motives Bertolucci concentrates instead on a brother-sister pair of unhappy twins who spend most of their time either pretending they are playing parts in great old American movies or reading out loud from the wisdom of magical Mao. The twins recruit an attractive and impressionable American into the group mostly to add a little decadent sex to their games. They don't like the way their wealthy parents grew up -- their father was once a rebel, he's now a rich writer and a member of the establishment. The newly formed trio never seem to leave their very large apartment or even get out of bed or the bath tub until the revolution marches by their window and throws a rock through it. The twins return to the streets as dangerous terrorists. Is Bertolucci saying that super subjectivity, decadence infantilism and day dreaming fantasy destroyed our hopes for revolution? Most of the people I knew back then were willing to grow up and take on amazing responsibilities -- they just wanted to do it on their own terms.

Vietnam Syndrome Remembering

Days of the dead falling from the Iraqi sky
still dropping shock and awe
on women and children
safer fighting those Arabs
when you fly above them
unless they're on your plane.

A Viet Cong never had air cover
crawling in tunnels
for a million miles
hidden under palm fronds
on invisible bridges
neither in shock nor awe
he bled greatly
he won.

----
Day 265 -- Went from two to three elephant sized ibuprofens yesterday -- and I did feel a bit better, less wasted. Let's see if it lasts -- but it did make one day easier to get through. I heard about a friend of mine who has even more advanced Hep C than me --I would never urge this treatment hell on anyone whose life doesn't depend on it. It seems, his does.

We saw The Last Picture Show, the Peter Bogdanovich, early 70's, chillingly black and white masterpiece about a dying Texas town and its inhabitants. The town's economy isn't the only thing that's being gutted, individual and collective souls are also dying. Only friendship and its values remain and they are under constant attack. Friendship doesn't always win. Bogdanovich uses slow sweepingly graceful camera pans and extra long close ups and grim stares, to portray the overwhelming bleakness of it all. There's a bit of Welles here and even some Eisentein for good measure.

A Perfect Storm

If we vote for Jeb Bush
Florida will keep getting hit by hurricanes
till the state's destroyed
every trailer home in complete ruins.
Miami Beach bought in a yard sale
by surviving bands of ancient Jews.

Jeb thinks you can negotiate
with hurricanes
like they were April showers
willing to make deals
thinking they're just some random weather
willing to take a payoff
and back off,
not Michael Moore's ultimate judgment
against his evil family.
A very high budget catastrophe film
with a very unhappy ending.

---------
Day 264 -- Hep C treatment sleep and some reading -- Tom H is coming to town, maybe we can have a little reunion. Listen to the liberal Air America radio programs -- they are a great way to release anger.

We saw 61*. It's the early 70's and NY Yankee teammates and roommates Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle are battling to break Babe Ruth's previously unassailable record of 60 homers for a single season set way back in 1927. These are the golden days, when clean cut ball players trained on booze and cigars and not steroids and an even older generation thought breaking Ruth's record would put them in an early grave or bring on the Day of Judgment. Biggest sin of the film is Maris not being able to give good press interviews and not being showy. The fans turn on him and support Mantle, but Roger breaks the record anyway.

News Today

A cold wind
with gruesome words.

1000 dead Americans
eyes closed in Iraq
giving up the ghost
but with praise on their lips,
their last breaths proclaiming
Thank You President Bush for making my life
so much safer since 9/11,
I was frightened
till you came along.

Nice to know
our corpses have a sense of humor.

-------

Day 263 ---- Not much to report but too much day time sleep. Counting days and weeks we are chopping away at September. Its days decrease daily. Hep C treatment will end in early November. The current Nation Magazine has a great piece on the original Crusades and their hideous influence on world civilization.

We saw JFK. Oliver Stone's docudrama on the Kennedy assassination and the efforts of New Orleans District Attorney Jim Garrison to figure out who did it and why. The long film boasts an outstanding cast with Kevin Costner, playing Mr. DA. Stone's work establishes that Garrison did prove, there was a violent CIA cabal operating in New Orleans and accused assassin Lee Harvey Oswald had some relationship to the group. But he wasn't able to get much beyond that point.
I was convinced that Garrison was correct in his hunches about the killing of Kennedy being a right wing coup d'etat, when years later, Judy and I visited Dallas and looked out of the very window of the Texas Book Depository supposedly used by Oswald for murder most foul. Sorry Warren Commission but Lee Harvey could never have made that third shot. For more evidence that Garrison was on target about anti-democratic ultra right wing government being forcibly imposed on America, read all about George W Bush in the morning news.

Coming Attraction

Ruling Iraq part of the time
by putting in puppets
proving Kerry was a Viet Cong officer
getting reelected.

Rewarding himself,
working under cover of desert sun and mass murder
Bush finally conquers Iraq completely
a brawling Christian swimming in sacrificial Muslim blood
getting ready for Iran.

Next?
American democracy extinguishing in Tehran.
Four more years.
Bringing it on.

Day 262 -- Maybe calling them Hep C treatment side effects misses the point. They really make up the symptoms of a drug based self induced disease. What do you have, if for 11 months, you always have fever, rashes, sharply reduced appetite and no energy? Any mother in Brooklyn will tell you that's a sickness. And yes it occasionally causes heart attacks and crippling arthritis. Fortunately, it's an illness that slowly clears up when you stop taking the medication. So lets stop the euphemisms, the treatment is illness fighting illness -- hopefully the battle has a happy conclusion.
We had dinner in Lake Oswego with J & D, a pleasant relaxing evening.

We viewed The Blob. Not the original but an OK remake. What seems to be a comet, hits close to a small Midwestern town (why doesn't it ever hit a Jewish neighborhood in Brooklyn? We never had any fun. ) and a life sucking blobish monster is brought to earth. We think it's an ET but big surprises are in order. The Blob's most tenacious enemies are the towns resident juvenile delinquent and its home coming queen. Romeo and Juliet taking on the evil slime and falling in love. Keep a good eye out for evil government scientists.

Fever House Rules

Break down
when new jobs aren't happening
nor the heart
and not the liver either,
needle medicine is new sickness,
fear paranoia and exploding death bombs
come as organ replacement
in a technologically advanced complete crack up of community
dragging my way over jagged surfaces
fever ruling my mind
the needle and I
racing to the finish line
in ugly opposition.

--------

Day 261 -- A very hard day with occasional harsh disunity. Jessica's old friend S brought over some home made lasagna and that helped. The Friday night needle continues to have severe unpleasant effects. We are going out to J and D's for dinner. I hope I have the energy.

We watched the French made Triplets of Belleville. An old lady, her friendly fat dog and champion bicycle racing son have an amazing animated adventure. The art work is strongly reminiscent of pre--Disney opium influenced surrealism. The son is kidnapped by gamblers who intend to forcibly incorporate him into their racket. The dog and old lady meet up with a 1930s singing swinging sister group of triplets and they set about to rescue her son. It's all visually mind blowing and the capacity of old people to resist cruelty and exploitation is inspiring.

Cracking Open
Cracker's Chest

Clinton gonna have an electric saw
cutting open his chest.
During discourse,
Dubya was sending greetings of good wishes
but his standing by rabble of thousands
booing Clinton's hopes with hatred
George just standing there
smirking there
"I didn't tell them to do it."

I had my chest sawed open
don't let macho palaver fool you
it takes months to recover.
Two fisted Big Bill
is out of the campaign.

Kerry's really gotta get off his wind surfer
gotta kick some ass
gotta do it for himself.

--------

Day 260 ---- Effects from Hep C treatment Interferon needle struck hard and quick yesterday (like Republican killers) , causing many unpleasant moments last night but time is passing -- this will be over in November.

We saw The Morning After. Jane Fonda doing a great job as a permanently drunk, blacking out ex movie actress who wakes up one fine morning to discover a male corpse in her bed. The guy has a knife sticking out of his chest. Fortunately for Jane, she meets Jeff Bridges, an ex cop who for some weird reason (she is a super obnoxious drunk) wants to help her. The stolid but reliable Jeff reminds me of Tom Hayden, who went from being my Berkeley roommate to being Ms Fonda's one time husband. That's an impressive promotion. Although shot mostly in the sun of Los Angeles, the film finally draws some very noirish conclusions.
