Do No Harm

Doctor Doom
will see you now
being tortured
in Abu Ghraib prison.
He's standing next to
a drunken lumpen slut
performing a medical procedure
with her broom
that he designed
based on an extensive 1911 study
of brooms and butts in Mesopotamian society,
when the Iraqi dies
he'll note it as a previous existing condition.
We know the slut's name.
What's his?
-----

Day 245 --Judy came home from NYC with some kind of chest cold. My immunity system is bashed in by Hep C treatment anemia. Naturally I picked up her bug. In addition to the permanent side effects flu that I've had for mine months, I now have an ordinary flu. They make for a powerful mix of unpleasantness.
We made Tuscan style tomato soup last from our home grown tomatoes. Fantastic!

We watched The Puppet Masters, a frightening fast paced film based on the work of Robert A. Heinlein. Ugly ET's enter human bodies and take full control of their hearts and minds. We are reminded of Alien and The Invasion of the Body Snatchers but mostly, we recall a George W Bush rally.

Dumb And Dumber

Edward Kennedy
isn't allowed to fly,
an obvious smiling eyes
Irish gangster
maybe a falling down drunk
with binding ties
to anarchist terrorists,
fattening himself on Arab food,
he's grounded
and the republic is served.
America is safer.
In our Homeland's friendly skies
a Senator is unwelcome.

---
Day 244 ---- A.N. showed up. He's on the road, escaping an Arizona summer. We all went out for Cuban food and then watched the Daily Show. Judy and I met AN in NYC in 1968. He invented the LBJ dart board. A Bush version would probably be illegal.
Got bad new on my Hep C treatment anemia. It's worse. My immunity system is weak and I need to wash my hands all the time. It's easy for me to get sick. A special blood test is scheduled for Sept I. I feel miserable but at least the clock is ticking and days are passing.

We saw Scenes OF A Crime. It's an action packed, brutal mobster, corrupt politician, evil capitalists kind of film, portraying an American world so out of control in its absolute evil that the decent intentions of some of its players will always be thwarted. All you can do, is steal some money, board a plane -- and hope to escape. But can you?

Good Morning America

Heat fever
jittery nerves
antipersonnel weapons planted in my joints
no desire to move
the day awaits me like a butcher shop surgeon
in Baghdad
waiting to serve
a headless hungry soldier's ghost
eating the rich.

-------
Day 243 --- It was such a bad day for massive physical discomfort. It's one thing to have ordinary Hep C treatment low energy. It's another to have aching nervous joints along with the hard breathing lethargy. Great news -- Judy passed her mamo. A N --the legendary inventor of the LBJ dart board and millioaire author of the Mac Bible will be paying us a visit tonight. He's left his burning desert for the summer.

We saw "Under The Tuscan Sun" a likable and predictable film about an American woman recovering from a broken marriage who buys a very run down rural house in beautiful Tuscany. Naturally, sun and sex mixed with lots of happy wine revive her spirit. Village community with a new sense of family rebuild her soul. How could anyone be unhappy eating that food? Exile anybody?

Knock On Any Door

Six FBI Agents
knocking on dissenting door
going boooo
trick or treat
anarchist dog
we've got our eyes on you.

Better stay away from biting a Big Apple:
Eden advice offered by God to Adam.
G-men agree,
always eyeing you
proclaiming
better not go to New York City
protesting coercing
violating many secret statutes
of Patriotism's Acts

Stay under your bed
watching Bush on TV
protest all you want
if your neighbor doesn't file a report
it's OK with us.

---------
Day 242 ----My Hep C treatment days have only two and a half months to run. They are very hard, reminding me of the last days of a jail sentence I once served. When I first started doing the prison time, the outside world faded into unreality. It's easier not to think too much of lost freedom. But when I got close to the end of my sentence, my real world reemerged. I thought about it all the time. But i was still locked up. The last days were the most difficult. Same with the Hep C treatment's course of suffering and attitude. Now that I am running short, the end of treatment time being near, I think of my old life without shooting up Interferon and taking poison pills every day and I can't wait for it to begin. I have more hope these days but it comes at the price of agonized frustration.

I watched Confidence. A film about nonstop grifting con artists who are always going for the big money. Their targets are rich guys who deserve to be seriously ripped off. They're tactics are always nonviolent. They do it for the bucks but also the kicks and sense of power and accomplishment. The camera catches the con's action with lots of quick close ups and shifting angles. Among the corrupt crew is actor Donal Logue playing a bought and paid for cop. Logue was last seen on the big screen playing me, in Steal This Movie. From portraying a Yippie Prince, to a roguish cop--is this a comedown?

Fiesta

Ghosts of Barcelona, Guatemala and Chile
murdered by fascists
in coups and wars
smile today in warmth,
wine of celebration
Chavez won in Venezuela
the wretched of the earth
showing up at the ballot box
knowing which end is up
fighting for justice
and oil wealth
a big vote victory beyond challenge
though Bush might call it fuzzy math.

-------
And here's a reworked version of yesterday's poem.
--
Everyday Democracy

1-

First your neighbors tell lies
to lurking monsters
who come ringing your doorbells
proclaiming
word on the streets is saying
you're going to the Republican Convention
against Bush
you stand accused
as Allah's secret spy.
Six big G-Men
on fishing expeditions,
in your face and living room
with probing questions
and limitless unspoken threats.

2-
Old Black people in Florida
who just want to vote,
the Jeb Bush police
come knocking on their door
part of his
"Operation Enduring Old Black Joe"
investigating local election fraud,
might as well be proclaiming:
Saddam has been overthrown
America is safer
Voting Now? Why bother?
Besides,
Jeb's running the kingdom,
ancient Negroes
showing up on election day
could constitute a crime.
A fraud against nature.

---------------

Day 241 --Judy and I went to a Nature Preserve. The promoters had booked a troupe of touring Canadian Beavers to replace the formerly headlining rabbits out of a tree act. There was also glamorous back up from white Herons. It's always different at the preserve -- new stuff -- new performers, unlike current peace marches which never seems to change their bill. When we came home I slept for an hour. We also ate lunch in a restaurant. I felt semi Hep C treatment human at least for a while.

I saw Page Master. It's an entirely predictable early adolescent film about a nerdy kid who studies statistics and is afraid of climbing into a tree house built by his father. Of course the kid gets lost in a dark tunnel of his own fears and winds up in a magic library where he is turned into a cartoon by a magnificent multi colored dragon born of transcendent animation skill. As animated cartoon this ordinary flick becomes fantastic. The kid is forced to do battle with Long John Silver, the Hound of the Baskervilles, Mr. Hyde, Moby Dick and a very mean St George dragon . Much of the art work is mind blowing and LSD inspired.
What's a tree house after that?

Day 240 -- Robert Greenwald, the director and producer of Steal This Movie (the Abbie Hoffman biopic) was in town with his latest cinematic work. We had a reunion after the jam packed showing. He is as always a great guy. I'm feeling feverish right now --I can only put off the Hep C needles effects for so long.

Robert Greenwald's new film is Outfoxed. An amazingly well crafted and jam packed documentary portrait of the inner and outer workings of Rupert Murdoch's Fox News. Most of the sources are former employees of Fox and perhaps there are some who still work for Murdoch. Greenwald's absolutely proven thesis is that Fox is not just a more conservative news source. Under the hilarious guise of being "fair and balanced," Fox is a direct instrument of the Republican Party and marches exclusively under its command.

For more info on Outfoxed (you can get it on dvd) check out the Outfoxed website --www.outfoxed.org/ . The film will be playing in Portland Or next week at the Clinton Street Theater.

On The Road

Passing pilgrims
in a state of Woodstock mind
observed a flashing colors bright light sign
built on a super high way of being
and proclaiming:
"Support Suspicious Activity"
sponsored by
Committee For A Cool Community.

--------
Day 239 -- Nice visit from L and B, they brought over Chinese food and earlier we went to a movie at the Hollywood, a semi normal day. I enjoyed the company. Felt a little less sleepy but got really out of breath walking a block to the movie theater. Hep C Friday night needle should start coming on strong today. Again, it's nice to have Judy back.

The movie we saw at the Hollywood was Control Room a riveting documentary of Al-Jazeera's coverage of the George Bush's Iraqi War. Al J is the Arab CNN and the only widely available news source in the Muslim Middle East that is not controlled by a government. Control Room tells a bold tale of brave men and women who report the news Bush and Rumsfeld want to suppress. All the corpses that were blacked out of Fox appear in their coverage. Eventually Al-Jazeera comes under US military attack and one of their reporters is killed. The film gets a little weaker after the US assault, becoming more about Iraq and war than independent news coverage. Do you wonder whatever happened to those humanistic secular Arabs who were so influential in the 1960's? It seems their children all work for Al J.
