Good Sports

Iranian Judo champ won't fight
an Israeli at the Olympics
in solidarity with the people of Palestine
guess this makes a mighty Muslim hero
but in comic book professional wrestling
the Iron Sheik would have really done Allah proud
administering the Camel Crunch
to the Rasslin Rabbi's broken back
till the Horrible Hasid
grabbed him from behind
applying a Sabbath Strangle Hold
and Bagel Butt Buster
getting everyone disqualified
including the fans
and their cable service.

Day 238 --- Judy returned from Baltimore and NYC. She had a great time and really loved the Modigliani exhibit at the Jewish museum. I'm really glad she is back. I was feeling a bit more energy yesterday, sleeping less, getting around easier. But I took my Hep C treatment needle last night -- so my new found healthiness will of necessity be short lived.

We watched The Lady Vanishes, which is Hitchcock at his finest and most fun. A black and white work (he started in the silent movies) from the late 1930's. A nice old Brit lady is on a mysterious train in central Europe and then she is "disappeared." All the passengers but one deny her very existence. They are motivated by conspiracy or selfishness. Only one fellow traveler, a younger woman proclaims the Lady's existence. She has to resist incredible pressure, not to conform to the majority who insist she is delusional. Kafka would have loved this film.

Jail House Rock

Mutilating prisoners in Iraq
but we provide lavish luxury
for inmates on our shore,
our prisons being so five star
we are making its guests
pay for the honor.

Wardens adding up bills
for locked down cuisine
rent, medical costs, clothing expenses
whatever else
their customer oriented establishment
can establish.

Bill collectors
coming after released cons
making them pay
another debt to society
by seizing cars, houses, all assets.
In America we are learning
how to torture prisoners
after they are free.

------
Day 237 ---- I got locked out of my house yesterday. Not the best thing for someone who is worn down sleepy sick from the Hep C treatment. It was in the later evening. Fortunately a returning neighbor and his ladder came along and F was able to climb up to the second floor bedroom. Very very lucky for me, that neighbor's timely appearance. Imagine sleeping on the deck? In bed, I had trouble falling asleep, weird chemicals had been activated by the stress but finally watching some bad movies put me to sleep. Before the drama I had a great visit from Dory.

One good movie was Bull Durham. The classic tale of minor league baseball where the players are either heading upwards or sinking. Nobody remains in the same place for very long. For a baseball film, this movie actually reveals a lot about baseball, about how to play it well and how not too. It also conveys a bit of wisdom -- the big leaguers with their multi million dollar contracts are the superior athletes but truth is, many of them are only a little bit better than the guys in the minors who work for Wall-Mart in the off season.

We Shall Overcome

Martin Luther King
organized a bus boycott,
he was coercing a city government
in to integrating its public transit.
Patriot Act says he was a terrorist,
you can't break the law anymore
no coercing allowed on this bus.
All King's friends and supporters
are criminals,
they are the guys
who name streets after him
putting him on postage stamps.
Patriot Act says they all should go to prison
but terrorist chatter
does not reveal
MLK's current safe house.

A Bird On A Wire

Our friendly sky's
will be under extended surveillance
cause the "no-fly list"
will soon be greatly expanded.
This time including birds and super heroes.

Day 236 --- Yet another sleepy afternoon with strange unpleasant dreams. I did feel better by the late afternoon and was in OK shape when Joey and his daughters arrived bringing dinner. It was an energizing visit. Judy is happily chomping away at the Big Apple. This morning, I'm feverish again.

I watched New Jack City and it's all about Crack and how hip and somewhat likable brothers off the block sell poison to other brothers off the block for fun and enormous profit. Naturally, hip and somewhat likable cops take them on. The almost all black cast is great, the rap music even better and thanks to director Mario Van Peebles, the action is never boring. The plot however is a bit too larger than life and comic bookish to be taken too seriously.

Answer My Friend

George Bush
sent a gang hunting for Al Q Nukes in New York
after 9/11
not wanting to upset the Mayor of Gotham,
he didn't tell him.

Freedom ravaging paranoia
now permitting Kafka trained
American border guards
being judge and jury
deporting aliens without benefit of legal appeal.

New CIA chief
slated to be right wing Republican hack and spook
no point building
a massive secret order of surveillance
then letting it make up it own mind.
Someday
nobody will be allowed that privilege.

Last hope
lucky for us
breezes in branches still entertain our night
blowing in the wind
without Bush.

-------
Day 235---- Just another sleep filled day. Judy's Planned Parenthood panels went well. F is here. Joey and gang bringing dinner tonight. Reading Jonah's book about Northern California writers.

I watched A League Of Their Own, set during World War 2, it recalls some forgotten American history. All the great baseball players were in the army, so the team owners decided that if Rosie is riveting in the factories why shouldn't she also be belting baseballs in the stadium. A pro-women's league is formed and some exciting baseball is played, there is great team work and inspiring companionship but also harsh rivalry. After the war ended and the big male stars came home, there were efforts made to keep the women's league alive but in line with the coformist/conservative 1950's, the sisters were now playing soft ball.

Love Is Strange

You spy on me
I'll snitch on you,
J. Alfred Dubya's love song
to his mighty corporations
and kindly charities
giving him donations
of private information
about your liver and ideas
that even the Patriot Act
sez the government
can't collect.
The secret police force
being outsourced.

------
Day 234 -- A sleepy Hep C treatment sort of a day. Reading knocked me out. Dom still here, keeping me company. The conference is going well for Judy. Joan called. She and Danny are back from SF and worn out.

I watched Harry and Tonto. A buddy film about an old guy
and his cat on the road from NY to Venice Beach, looking for a new home and meeting some very remarkable people along the way. Directed by Paul Mazursky in his usual eccentric and likable manner, we watch a portrait of what it's like to get old, lose the love of your life, your best friend and a great apartment on Manhattan's upper west side, to be badly battered, but to not give up.

Bad Ass Puppet

They've carved
the Allawi puppet out of Saddam wood.
A new tough guy tyrant
for a new American Iraq,
he's burning Shiites
making war not love
on resisting rebels
planning to behead trouble makers
closing news agencies,
strutting like Bush
he's one bad dude
don't be fucking with his Punch & Judy strings
or the guys that pull them,
he's got a national army,
it's all-American.

-------
Day 233 -- Slept a lot in the afternoon. Judy called from Baltimore and Jessica from San Francisco. Cheering me up on a hard day. Just finished reading American Scream by old friend Jonah Raskin. It's a very well done reminder of why Allen Ginsberg's Howl is such a great and influential poem.

I rewatched Weather Underground, an informative nicely paced documentary on the history and motives of that 60's rebel organization. Old time Weather activists are revealing interviewed, as well as political opponents on the left and even an FBI agent who was assigned the impossible task of catching them. The film's emphasis is on the moral imperatives that motivated these idealistic young people to make very dangerous choices, to do something--anything, in opposition to the Vietnam War. Their common voice speaks to us now -- to do nothing in the face of war and its overwhelming violence, is itself a most violent and terrible act.

Make Love Not War

Friday night needle
its poison
drowns my guts
like I'm Najaf Iraq
being taken apart
brick by bone
I was shouting in ghostly streets
Bring The War Home.
Whoever thought that would mean
chemotherapy?

--
Party Time

Spotted on a Maryland Highway,
are computerized signs
proclaiming
to the sleepless night
Report Suspicious Activity.
The dead and buried citizen spy program
TIPS
risen from its tomb
partying
like it was 1984.

Day 232 -- Dom is here E and M brought some Thai food over last night for a good visit. Watched some videos with Dom. Judy called in from Baltimore this morning -- she seemed rested. I felt reasonably OK yesterday -- but annoyingly ill this morning -- I'm waiting for the ibuprofen to kick in.

I watched Phantom OF The Paradise, a Brian De Palma noir classic, which offers his darkest views of capitalism and the music industry. Proceeding in an over the top serio comic and melodramatic fashion, Phantom offers a combination of Faust and The Phantom Of the Opera as a rock cantata that strongly resembles the then unmade, Rocky Horror Show. The music is truth telling but the audiences are made up of mad men lovers of deadly decadence and the promoters and performers embody the purity of absolute evil. How the music world had fallen to hell! In 1965, the San Francisco sound was so happy with hope and inspiration -- now the sound was being managed by monsters. For a while the music was still OK -- but how long could that last?
