Dec 13, 2003

Day 1 of 288 --Flu feelings and fever came as expected. Started up at 4.30 am and woke me up --didn’t want to be lonely. Fever running a hundred and my blood pressure is slightly high. Drinking a lot of juice --appetite is low.

Putting the needle in my thigh last night wasn’t so dramatic in the doing --Zen and the Art of Shooting Up - I imagined the needle was already in - and I noticed no pain or blood when I actually placed it “that boy has the makings of an accomplished junky.”

A couple of friends remembered to call me when the game got rough. My friends are going to be a big part in keeping my humor strong and my soul healthy.

Judy is off to a good start. Being nice to me and being very supportive but also finding ways not to get overwhelmed. We are still having some fun. Ah love.

Although the six pills I take every day will probably make me feel worse I am hoping to get used to all this and to feel much better in a few weeks. I am in a good mood and feel positive about the whole deal. Let me stay that way.

Saw Winged Migration on the big tube this morning - Judy and I want to be birds and fly all day and forever over beautiful places and states of mind. Maybe after I recover from Hep C --that is what we will do.

Hiding Out

Does George Bush frighten you?
Scare you into passive aggressive
hiding out in your own soul
and staying off streets of angry protest
cause it's all growing way too mean?

Back when Bush had master of the universe poll figures
you marched against him
in what puny pundits called
Vietnam era numbers
but now that Dubya is only breaking even
you figure effective protest
is just supporting
the Dean of Vermont.

Did it dawn on you
that Dubya wasn’t an ordinary president
that he possessed the cold fiery heart
of a tyrant
that everything
you ever took for granted about liberty
could be purchased at a garage sale?

Don’t you know
that the palpable nightmare
is a stage prop
programed by Rove
like that plastic turkey in Baghdad

get back to the streets
cause
they are playing you
to tremble
like the tyrant has triumphed

when his vulnerable ego
remains breakable
rule the world dreams
can still be shattered.

Here Comes The Bride

Friday night needle
on the
sacred sundown for Semites
the bride of creation visiting
our burning candles
and I greet her humbly
by filling my syringe.

Thirty years ago
I raised another needle
of despair, it was that time,
and now history comes due
repeating itself
as farce or tragedy
how would I know.

Welcome to the bride of hope.

Here's another version of yesterday's effort

Vietnam Syndrome Reconsidered

History,
breaking hearts and minds
drunk as a skunk
falling backwards.
tripping over headlines,
that were worn out after Vietnam
and
destroying all those villages
to save them,

headlines
once again proclaiming
a great US victory
now racked in Iraq
when a suicide bomber wounds 61
because no Americans died
and the bomber was repulsed
well,
actually he blew himself up
just like a Buddhist monk on fire

taking us with him
this time.

American Army Had Just Won The War

History,
drunk as a skunk
stumbles over its tracks
and
headlines
worn out after Vietnam
once again proclaim
a great US victory
when a suicide bomber wounds 45 Americans
because no one died
and the bomber was repulsed
well,
actually he blew himself up
just like a Buddhist monk on fire

taking us with him
this time.

Seeing

David Ben Gurion
Israel’s first Prime Minister
once promised
that his country
would be
a light unto the nations
cause that’s what
the Good Book sez
its gotta be.

These days
that light is sure burning bright.
When American soldiers
build barbed wire fences
around Iraqi villages
and bulldoze homes
and arrest whole families
if one member is a guerilla suspect,
they boast about studying
Israeli tactics
and learning from Israeli soldiers
about the Arab mind.

Israel teaches Americans
how to turn villages into concentration camps
cause that's what Arabs really respect.

Sending gruesome trainers.
instructing
in the arts
of infiltration and assassination.

The light unto the nations
so bright so hot
it burns blind as a bat
its original source.

Israelis and Americans
can’t see a thing
on a clear day
and not even a dog will guide them.

Party Rules

Birthday Party
lighted by
fiery sparks
offering best wishes
for the coming chemo.

Endless array of friends
offering sweet solidarity

But if treatment prescribed
is boosting my immunity system
why is sickness
the side effect?

The Interferon needle comes every Friday night
welcoming the shabbos bride,
it generously offers to shoot up
and save a life.

And strength of friendship
promises next year
will be spent
in good health
and brighter celebration.
