The Internet
was supposed to
be
technologies guaranteed defense
against
Big Neighbor
Big Brother
and
Big Prison.

But a recent report from China
says
that
Internet info
is so super-centralized
that
its child's play
for
Big Comrade
to
block
unwelcome, impolite
web sites.

In China
if you want to
freely exchange information
your best bet
is still
the
old fashioned
telephone.

Let your fingers
do
the
talking.

Bush knows Iraq has very bad weapons
he knows it
and so does his junta
and if you
don't
know it
he wont prove it
why should he?

No need really,
to prove
it
to
the UN inspectors
who could go
to the sites
of
very bad weapons
and
dismantle them,
better to invade
and
spend
a trillion bucks on
a
war
that will give us
a
fuzzy feeling
that Bush
is
protecting
us
against
terror
protecting
us
against
Islam.

The strict father
in time
of trouble.

Wilsonville High

Just got back from Wilsonville High School
It's an ordinary school
in an ordinary Republican suburb.
Why do they sill
have a fantastic class on the '60's?
and why do they keep inviting
Dory and me
to lecture?
Haven't they heard
that
there is paralytic fear
of dissent
of critique
of freedom
and
that
the military is taking over
the
High Schools
and all
law enforcement?

These guys at
Wilsonville High School
still think
that
America is a democracy
and
as long as they
act
that way
some young
passionate
part
of
America
will
be.

63

I never thought I would get here,
certainly not on the Chicago morning
of Dec. 4, 1969
when
Jerry Rubin woke me up
and
announced
that
Black Panther Fred Hampton had just been
murdered
by the
Chicago police.

They killed Fred,
sooner or later
they
would come for Jerry/Abbie
and
sooner or later
they would come
for
me.

No way would I
make it to 63.
Way!

Here I am
much surgery not withstanding.
As lousy as the world is
As lousy as Bush is
I'm glad I made it
cause
it all continues to be fascinating
and I love
my wife
my daughter
and
my friends
and my hopes.

So:
Let me raise a cup to my fallen pals,
the empty chairs and tables
at the Yippie Cafe,
to
Jerry Rubin
Abbie Hoffman
Phil Ochs
and all the others.

In dreams they come for me.
and say
they
love me, miss me, want me
OK,
someday,
I'll be coming
but
not
just
yet.
I've got a few more poems up my sleeve.
And a few more Bushies to burn.

Lucky Duckies

God,
don't you just envy the poor.
They hardly pay any taxes.

Well OK,
they pay a lot of
sales tax
and
payroll tax
but gee,
when it come to
income tax
they pay so much less
than the
rich
and the
super rich
that even
the
Wall Street Journal
wants to know
if that's justice.

The
WSJ
is concerned that poor people
like
big government
too much
and support
the
welfare state
and government regulation
of
corporate greed
too enthusiastically.

For the WSJ
big government is
OK
for
reading your mail
library lists
shopping lists
Christmas lists
friendship lists
but not
for
helping
poor people
eat
and
stay warm.

They want
poor people's taxes
to be raised
significantly
and they figure
that
poor people
will then
hate
mean old
big government
just as much
as a
billionaire from Texas
when he is
buying and selling
overpriced
Congressmen.

They believe
poor people
will survive
patriotically
and
controllably
on an angry diet of
war
and
Rush Limbaugh.

Happy Birthday

Two more days to my birthday,
63, I'll be.

A year ago I spoke at the
San Diego
Art Museum.
Told them it was appropriate
to find me
in
a
museum.
Told them that the
NewYorker Mag
once called me
a
relic.
These days
I
sure wish
I was.

Sure wish
antiwar activism
was a thing of the past
because
war
was
a thing
of the
past.

Sure wish
social justice
activism
was a thing of the past
because
greed
and
oppression
and
exploitation
were also
yesterday's
news.

Sure wish
they
cooled off
global
warming.

Sure wish
I
was
irrelevant.

Painful Patriotism

What's all this fuss
about
one of the UN Iraqi arms inspectors
being a leading light
in
America's S&M community?

Isn't Sadomasochism
what Bushism
is
all about?

Americans looking
for
a
strict
father figure
leader,
bent over his desk,
nervously expecting
tough love's
painful
protection,
secured by
corporal
capital
punishment's
righteous
revenge?
